The Battle of Mariupol is an ongoing military engagement between the Russian Federation and Ukraine which began on 25 February 2022, during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. The city of Mariupol is located in Donetsk Oblast, and is directly claimed by the Russian-backed Donetsk People's Republic.
Preceding the battle, Russian forces bombarded the city with artillery on 24 February, allegedly injuring 26 people.[1] On the morning of 25 February, Russian forces advanced towards Mariupol from DPR territory in the east, meeting the Ukrainians in battle near the village of Pavlopil.[2] The Ukrainians defeated the Russian forces, supposedly destroying 22 Russian tanks, according to the mayor of Mariupol, Vadym Boychenko.[3][4]
The Russian Navy began an amphibious assault on the Sea of Azov coastline just to the west of Mariupol on the evening of 25 February. An American defense official stated that the Russians are potentially deploying thousands of marines from this beachhead.[5][6]
