The Battle of Starobilsk is an ongoing military engagement that started on 25 February 2022, during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Background

Starobilsk (Ukrainian: Старобільськ, Russian: Старобельск) is a city near Luhansk in Luhansk Oblast, Ukraine. It serves as the administrative center of Starobilsk Raion. The river Aidar runs to the west of the city centre, creating a natural obstacle.

Battle

Initial clashes near Starobilsk were reported on 24 February 2022.[1] On 25 February 2022, the Armed Forces of Ukraine claimed to have destroyed a column of Russian soldiers which had prepared to cross the river Aidar.[2]

The city has been heavily damaged by Russian artillery barrages.[3]
