Choi Minho; (Hangul: ; Hanja: ; born December 9, 1991) is a South Korean idol singer, rapper, dancer, actor, model, promotional model and presenter. He is a member of South Korean boy group Shinee under the label SM Entertainment, as the main rapper, visual, and sub vocalist.

Career

Shinee

Minho was discovered at the 2006 S.M. Casting System. In 2008, he was chosen as a member of the group Shinee, the 5-member boy group debuted on May 25, 2008 on SBS's Inkigayo.[2]

Pre-debut

Before debuting with Shinee, Minho modeled for Ha Sang Baek's Seoul Collection F/W 08-09 in March 2008, two months before Shinee debut stage.[3]

Solo

Minho appeared in both the Korean and Japanese version of Girls' Generation's music video "Gee".[4]

He was also featured in the music video of VNT's debut song, Sound.

Acting

Minho debuted as an actor on November 20, 2010 in a KBS drama special, entitled Pianist.[5]

On December 7, 2011, it was announced that Minho will be taking on a comedic acting role in SBS‘s new sitcom, Salamander Guru and The Shadows, which will air in early 2012. Minho will be playing the role of Minhyuk, a genius hacker,alongside actors Im Won Hee and Oh Dal Soo. Salamander Guru and The Shadows is SBS’s first sitcom in 5 years and revolves around two robbers who impersonate a guru. The sitcom will air in January 2012.

On April 26, 2012, Minho have been confirmed to be the lead role for Korean drama adaptation "To The Beautiful You", off the popular Japanese comic, Hana Kimi. The drama is set to air in the second half of the year on SBS. It will be directed by Jun Kisang, who also directed the popular drama "Boys Over Flowers".[6]

Composing talent

Minho is known to have written and co-written several of the raps in Shinee's albums. For their earlier albums he co-wrote with JQ, a lyricist under SM.

In their 1st studio album The SHINee World, he co-wrote the raps to "Love Like Oxygen", "Love's Way", "One for Me", "Graze", and "Best Place".

In 2009, for their 2nd mini-album Juliette, he co-wrote "Talk to You", "Juliette", "Hit Me", and "Romeo + Juliette". For their 3rd mini-album 2009, Year of Us, he along with fellow member Key, and lyricist JQ wrote the song "Get Down", which features fellow labelmate Luna of f(x).

In their 2nd studio album Lucifer released in July 2010, he wrote the raps to "Up & Down" (which was co-written by fellow member Jonghyun), "Obsession" (also written by Jonghyun), "Your Name" (written by fellow member Onew), and co-wrote the songs "WOWOWOW" with JQ and "Shout Out" with the fellow members and MISFIT. In the repackaged album Hello, he wrote the rap for the title track "Hello", and co-wrote the raps for "One" and "Get It".

He is also credited for creating additional raps to the songs "Better", "To Your Heart", and "Stranger" in their 1st Japanese studio album, The First released in December 2011.

For their 4th mini-album Sherlock released in March 2012, he wrote the raps to the songs "Alarm Clock" and "Honesty" (written by Jonghyun).

Television shows

Minho hosted MBC's Music Core, alongside fellow Shinee member, Onew in 2011.[7] However, due to oversea schedules, they are on temporary leave.[8]

He is a permanent cast member on KBS's Let's Go Dream Team! Season 2.[9] He is often dubbed as the "Ace" of the show, having won the challenges at numerous occasions. He was put on temporary leave after an injury in January 2010, and only returned in the second half of the year. On October 16, 2011, Minho won Let's Go Dream Team! Season 2 ACE Special episode and took a Kia Cadenza (K7) home.

He was also a permanent cast member in the KBS program Oh! My School, also known as 100 Points Out of 100 .[10]

On October 3, 2011, Minho co-hosted the Hallyu Dream Concert held at the Kyungju Citizen Stadium alongside 2PM’s Taecyeon and actress Park Shin Hye, which was broadcasted on October 6, 2011 by Mnet Broadcasting Station.[11] On October 6, 2011, Minho, alongside Kara's Nicole, helped in the torch run for the opening ceremony of the 92nd National Sports Festival held in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province which featured 17,983 athletes.[12]

Personal life

In 2008 he was the 3rd Youth International Video Festival "the aura" Goodwill Ambassador with fellow Shinee member, Key. Minho was appointed as the ambassador of Konkuk University in 2010.

Minho graduated from Konkuk University's affiliated high school on February 10, 2010. After taking the college admissions test the previous year, he was admitted in 2010 to Konkuk’s part-time admittance for the arts and culture film major where he is currently attending.[13] His father, Choi Yun-Gyeom, is a well-known South Korean soccer coach. He has an older brother named Choi Minseok.

In March 2010, Minho was injured during a filming for Dream Team Season 2. He had to withdraw from his activities while fellow Shinee member Taemin replaced him on the show during his absence.[14][15] After his recovery, Minho finally came back in August 2010 to continue his activities and promotions of Shinee's second full length studio album, "Lucifer".[16]

On May 23, 2011, he was named Honorary Ambassador for Youth 2011.[17] He then received a name plate at the Youth Week celebration held in the COEX auditorium.
