Perry collaborated with Swedish producer Alesso releasing "When I'm Gone" in December 2021, afterwards she began hosting a concert residency named Play at the Resorts World Las Vegas for three years and received positive critical acclaim.[1] During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in February 2024, the artist announced her exit from American Idol following the conclusion of the twenty-second season in May, wanting to "go out and feel that pulse to my own beat" and release new music after being "in the studio for a while".[2]
Perry posted a fifteen-second teaser of her lip-syncing the song throughout social media on June 17.[3] The artist also revealed the cover artwork featuring herself in a metallic "alien-like" pants designed by Victor Clavelly with a white bikini top, photographed by Jack Brigdland.[4] The same day, she announced that the song would be released on July 11 and made it available for pre-order and pre-save via her website and various streaming services, with a music video premiering the next day.[5]
Perry arrived at the Hôtel Ritz Paris in a black limo prior for Paris Fashion Week on June 25, wearing a red Balenciaga custom dress featuring two trains.[6] Vogue later confirmed the outfit's second train is approximately one hundred-yards long showcasing the song's lyrics in white lettering.[7]
Critical reception[edit]
After the song's announcement, a snippet was released which met with negative criticism describing the lyrics being made from artificial intelligence.[8] Rolling Stone later reported Perry "reconnected" with various producers who worked on her third studio album, Teenage Dream (2010).[9] Many people criticized the artist for working with Dr. Luke on a song about female empowerment, who was accused in defamation lawsuit against American singer Kesha due to sexual harassment.[10]
