Golabganj (Template:Lang-bn), or Golabganj, is an Upazila of Sylhet District in the Division of Sylhet, Bangladesh.[1]

History

Golapganj came into existence on 20 October 1906 as Thana. Nothing is definitely known about the origin of the Upazila name. It is learnt that in past during the region of Emperor Islam Shah one Mr. Golap Roy was appointed the Dewan (Revenue collector) of Sylhet area. He became prominent by virtue of his social work and pity. He set up a ganj or trading centre on the bank of the river Surma that was named Golapganj after him. On another account, a wondering saint by the name of Gulab Shah came from the nearby Fenchuganj and establish a khanqa where the present-day Golapganj is located and eventually a bazaar came to an existence encircling the khanqa of Golab Shah. Thus the bazaar came to be known as Golabganj; the name was changes in the twentieth century from Golabganj to Golapganj. Although, Golab Shah moved to a village nearby, the bazaar bears the witness of his formation. The Upazila might have derived its name from this area's name where its headquarters is located. http://www.beanibazarkontho.com/%E0%A6%97%E0%A7%8B%E0%A6%B2%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%AA%E0%A6%97%E0%A6%9E%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%9C%E0%A7%87-%E0%A6%A8%E0%A6%BF%E0%A6%B0%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%AA%E0%A6%A6-%E0%A6%B8%E0%A7%9C%E0%A6%95-%E0%A6%A6%E0%A6%BF/
