Inview Technology (Inview Technology Ltd or simply Inview) is a UK based company, and is the world leading supplier of royalty free EPGs,[1] in partnership with companies such as Teletext[2] and Acetrax are turning low-cost TVs into connected, Smart TVs. The company is based in Northwich, Cheshire, UK and is privately owned. Its product, Inview Inside, transforms a “tier 2” TV into a Smart TV. The chairman Ken Austin is an expert in the EPG field.[3]
The company has 9 million set-top boxes world-wide and was one of the first to launch a broadcast TV listings service in the UK. Its latest royalty-free product “Axxis” was launched in January 2012; this is an internet TV application platform which in effect turns the TV into a connected TV. Inview, over the last 15 years, has been providing EPGs for the UK free-to-air market and is used by 24 brands with a total of 94 products on the market.[4]
Inview Inside
After 3 years in development, Inview Inside is beginning to be rolled out into a number of countries, including Spain, Italy, Germany, France and Poland. It is a unique product in that it is royalty-free and that it is made for cheap TVs. The effect of this on the market will be dramatic, as consumers will quickly ask, "Why buy a £1,200 Panasonic TV, when a television with Inview Inside does exactly the same?"
Another aspect of the product which makes it different to all others is the fact that Inview Inside recognizes which country it's in and only shows content relevant to that country. YouView, on the other hand is only available in the UK. InView guides are already in 9 million UK homes and around 4 million other European countries. By 2015 the number of TVs with Inview Inside is likely to rise to around 65 million in about 20 countries. The ‘Tier 2’ sector This sector represents 40% of the overall TV and set-top box market and comprises hundreds of different brands of TVs.
Chief Executive Julie Austin said, ”What is unique about InView is that we have developed a way to do it with very low cost microchips, and we are in the right place at the right time just as the market is really taking off. The 'tier two' manufacturers produce around 120 million products a year and 90 per cent of them embed our software in their products. We give it to them for free, and we make money from selling advertising on the programme guide and when the viewer begins to access services like video on demand. By 2014 we expect to be in 180 million homes globally, by which time we will have become an acquisition target for one of the big content providers like Google or Yahoo.“[5]
Partnerships
The digital movie retailer Acetrax has become Inview's latest partner, and began supplying online TV and movies for customers across the UK, France, Italy and Germany in February 2012, without them being tied into a subscription service.[6][7] Together with the On Demand Group (ODG) [8] Inview’s latest platform provides viewers with access to movies on a transactional video-on-demand (TVOD) basis, and a library of on-demand TV content available on an SVOD basis including TV series, children’s programming, classic movies and music videos.[9]
Other partnerships and features of the platform include:
- Video on demand (Acetrax and On Demand Group)
- Audio streaming (Grooveshark, Aupeo and internet radio)
- Social networking (Facebook, Picasa and Twitter)
- Personal interest (weather, dating and horoscopes)
- Local content (la Repubblica news in Italy, Le Monde in France and Interia in Poland).
Consumer Electronics Show (2012)
At CES, AMTC was demonstrating ‘Tier-2’ CE ‘middleware’ made by Inview and said that its low processing and memory footprint means that connected TV capabilities are available at low-cost.[10]
