KWSU-TV, virtual and VHF digital channel 10, is a Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) member television station licensed to Pullman, Washington, United States. The station is owned by Washington State University. KWSU-TV's transmitter is located on Kamiak Butte near Palouse, Washington.
KTNW, virtual channel 31 (UHF digital channel 22) in Richland, Washington, operates as a satellite of KWSU-TV, serving the Tri-Cities area. Its transmitter is located on Jump Off Joe Butte. Collectively branded as Northwest Public Television, the two stations cover southeastern Washington and north central Idaho as well as Wallowa County, Oregon.
KWSU's studios are located in the Murrow Communications Center on WSU's main campus in Pullman, while KTNW's studios are located on the WSU Tri-Cities campus in Richland.
KWSU serves a corner of the Spokane market as a "beta" station through the Program Differentiation Plan complimenting KSPS-TV and Idaho Public Television, while KTNW serves as the PBS member for the eastern portion of the Yakima/Tri-Cities market. The two stations are also carried on the Spokane and Yakima/Tri-Cities DirecTV and Dish Network feeds, expanding their potential audience to over 600,000 people in Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana. KWSU is also carried on Xfinity systems in the Spokane area as a PEG channel.
History
KWSU signed on the air on September 24, 1962 as KWSC-TV, becoming KWSU-TV in the 1970s.
KTNW made its debut on October 18, 1987. Prior to 1987, channel 31 was KTRX-TV, based in Kennewick, Washington, which was on the air briefly in the late-1950s.
KWSU and KTNW have been digital-only since February 17, 2009.
