Living former governors

As of September 2009, four former governors were alive, the oldest being John David Merwin (1958–1961, born 1921). Merwin is also the only living appointed governor of the territory. The most recent governor to die was Alexander A. Farrelly (1987–1995), on September 10, 2002. Farrelly was also the most recently-serving governor to die.
