Italy had 11 banking group (excluding banking group that owned by foreign banks) that were supervised by the European Central Bank directly, plus more than 400 banking groups or independent banks.

The Banker 2015 list

23 Italian banking groups were included in The Banker 2015 List of the Top 1000 World Banks by Tier 1 capital at 31 December 2014 (Mediobanca at 30 June). However, some banks were excluded for unknown reason
