Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets are an English psychedelic rock band formed in 2018 by drummer Nick Mason and guitarist Lee Harris to perform music from the early career of his former band Pink Floyd. As well as Mason, the band inlcudes Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet and long-time Pink Floyd live musician, Guy Pratt.[1] In an interview with Uncut magazine, Mason said the group were "not a tribute band", but wanted to "capture the spirit" of the era, and stressed that Kemp was not a direct replacement for original Pink Floyd frontman Syd Barrett.[2]

The band made their live debut in May 2018 in front of an invited audience at Dingwalls in London, playing a selection of Pink Floyd material from the pre-Dark Side of the Moon era.[3] This was followed by three more small shows at The Half Moon, Putney.[4] Following the success of these performances, they announced a European tour to take place in September 2018.[5]

Background

In 2016, Mason curated the Pink Floyd boxset, The Early Years 1965-1972 which documents the pre-Dark Side of the Moon (1973) era of psychedelia and experimentation and the band replacing guitarist and front-man, Syd Barrett with David Gilmour. The boxset contains much live material from the period which Mason says he wishes to revisit on his 2018 tour. Songs such as "Astronomy Domine", "Green Is the Colour", "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun", "A Saucerful of Secrets" and "One of These Days" were staples of early Pink Floyd shows from 1969-1972. Other songs which Mason and his band will be performing on the 2018 tour, such as "Lucifer Sam", "Arnold Layne", "Bike" and "Fearless" were never performed live by Pink Floyd during this era (save for some mimed TV appearances), though Gilmour frequently performed "Arnold Layne" on his 2006 tour; the song was also performed by Pink Floyd (minus Roger Waters) at The Madcap's Last Laugh, a Syd Barrett tribute show in May 2007. "Lucifer Sam" was also perfomed by Syd Barrett's short-lived band Stars in 1972. The song "Vegetable Man", recorded in 1967 was first released as part of the Early Years boxset in 2016.

The 2018 tour is Mason's first concert tour since Pink Floyd's 1994 tour in support of The Division Bell album. Emma Tricca was announced as the support act for the European tour on 15 August 2018,[6][7] she will be promoting her album, St. Peter (2018).
