Better photo
[edit]Can someone restore the original press photo of Adam that was in the info box? The new one is quite old, and no reason was given for the change. 122.15.117.92 (talk) 01:01, 22 February 2017 (UTC)
- It was deleted on Commons, so the answer to your question is no. [1] Everymorning (talk) 01:30, 22 February 2017 (UTC)
- Hey, this is Adam himself. I was alerted about this on Twitter. I'd like to supply a better photograph that I can donate the rights to. Can an experienced Wikipedia help facilitate that? It has been years since I've edited WP so I don't know the processes anymore. I agree with the user above that the photo currently on the page is unrepresentative. 2.50.151.216 (talk) 03:36, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
- If you are the copyright holder of the photo you wish to use, then please take a look at WP:DONATEIMAGE. The easiest thing for you to do would be you to upload the file directly to Wikimedia Commons as explained in c:Commons:Upload. You will, however, need to register for an account if you do not already have one (see c:Commoms:Commons:First steps/Account). If you do not wish to do that, then you can request assistance at Wikipedia:Files for upload. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:27, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you! I will do so; then I will post here rather than editing the page myself, since I'm aware of Wikipedia's prohibition against that. — Adam Conover † 00:25, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
- You're welcome Adam Conover. I suggest you take a look at Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide for reference. COI editing is not expressly prohibited by Wikipedia, but it is something which is highly discouraged because it can quickly lead to more serious problems. I also recommend taking a look at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons, in particular the "Dealing with articles about yourself" section. Finally, your choice of username is allowed per Wikipedia:REALNAME, but you might want to consider contacting OTRS to verify your identity to avoid any misunderstandings with other editors. Sometimes an account may be temporarily blocked as a precaution to prevent any damaging impersonation when the username is the same as a specific identifiable person. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:53, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you! I have reviewed the guidelines and will make sure to act accordingly! Here is a newly uploaded photograph: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adam_Conover_photograph.jpg I have emailed a license release to Wikipedia as well as listed on the Donate Image page. If everything looks in order, can someone readd it to this page? I will look into contacting OTRS as well. Thank you for your help! — Adam Conover † 01:14, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
- Hi again Adam Conover. I looked at File:Adam Conover photograph.jpg your image, and unfortunately I think you should read c:COM:OTRS#If you are NOT the copyright holder. Since you are the uploader, the person depicted in the photo, and also listed as the author ( "Big Breakfast" is you right?), then it seems kind of hard for you to have actually taken this particular photo. Typically the copyright is held by the photographer who takes the photo. Perhaps this was a work for hire and there was an official copyright transfer agreement made? Perhaps you did take the photo yourself using a timer of some kind? The photo can be seen being used online here in a New York Times article prior to its being uploaded to Commons which means you are going to have to send a permissions email to OTRS explicitly stating that you are the copyright holder or that the copyright holder has explicitly agreed to freely license the photo. I have tagged the file with a template, so please carefully read it and follow the instructions on it. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:13, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
- Your last guess is correct. The rights to the photograph were bought by the production company Big Breakfast, of which I am a representative (being an Executive Producer on the show.) I wll send the email as requested. Please inform me if there is any additional action needed on my part as I am a relative naif when it comes to WP bureaucracy. — Adam Conover † 04:18, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
- @Adam Conover: As long as you are able to provide proof that you are the copyright holder of the image, everything should be sorted out. What you need to do is follow the instructions at c:COM:OTRS#Declaration of consent for all enquiries. I think you might be able to do everything online now using the "Interactive Release Generator", but feel free to ask for assistance at c:Commons:Help desk if you get stuck. Once you have filed/sent a declaration of consent, you can replace the template I added to the file's page with c:Template:OTRS pending. Just login to Commons, go to the file's page, click on "Edit", remove the "No permission since" template at the top of the page, and then add {{subst:OP}}. Click on the "Show preview" button and if everything looks OK, click on "Save changes". The "OTRS pending" gives 30 days for the file's licensing to be verified. If it's not verified by then, the template will automatically revert back to c:Template:No permission since. There tends to be a bit of a backlog, so OTRS verification might not happen right away. You should receive an OTRS ticket number when you send in your email or create the release. Keep this on file somewhere because you can use it as a reference number to ask questions about the files status at c:Commons:OTRS/noticeboard. If by chance the file should be deleted before the license has been verified, do not re-upload it. Files are not really deleted; they are only hidden from public view. A file can be "undeleted" fairly easily once it's license has been verified. Good luck to you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:00, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
- Ah yes. I already did the "Interactive Release Generator"; I have now sent two emails, one using that generator, one using the template you gave me. Yes, I can prove that Big Breakfast is the copyright holder and that I represent them; will I be required to present that proof, or was the email I sent proof enough? Finally, would you be so kind as to replace the image on this page with the one I have uploaded? I still want to play it safe regarding making edits to my own page. :) — Adam Conover † 05:06, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
- The email you sent in to OTRS should contain enough information to allow an OTRS volunteer to verify any claims you've made. OTRS volunteers have been specially selected/vetted and tasked by the Wikipedia community to deal with private and proprietary information, etc. I am not a OTRS volunteer myself so I am not privy to exactly what things they are looking for, but I'm sure one will contact you if the information you sent in is lacking in any way. As I posted above, you can always ask any questions at c:COM:OTRSN. AS for adding the file back to the article, maybe just wait until the licensing issue is sorted. Once your email has been received and OTRS volunteer will replace the "OTRS pending" template with c:Template:OTRS received and once the licensing has been verified that "OTRS recieved" template will be replaced with c:Template:PermissionOTRS. After the licensing has been sorted out one way or another, then someone (even you) can probably re-add the file to the article without any problem. If someone object and removes it again, then things will be hashed out on this talk page per WP:BRD. Finally, one last thing, try to think of the article as an "article written about you" and not "your article". It will help you avoid problems with WP:OWN. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:32, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you for the advice. To your last point, I do think of it that way! Was just using loose language. That's why I'm trying to avoid editing it directly! — Adam Conover † 06:04, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

Birthday
[edit]User:BrillLyle, about this, it is not relevant that the subject doesn't want their birthdate displayed. Jytdog (talk) 22:53, 1 October 2017 (UTC) edited
According to Conover himself, his birth year is not 1984 or 1985 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.7.168.235 (talk) 07:06, 19 March 2018 (UTC)
Esquire ref
[edit]The Esquire ref added here adds no value and supports no content. This is the definition of WP:REFSPAM. Jytdog (talk) 22:54, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Jytdog: This is inaccurate. Esquire is a legitimate news source where subject is confirming and correcting information that is on the page. You are obviously watching my edits. This constitutes harassment. This is also in NO WAY me violating 3Rs -- it's YOU starting a 3R. It's unacceptable. Stop. -- BrillLyle (talk) 22:58, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
- Nope I am watching this page due to Wiki What (and the others, for the same resaon). Not about you. The ref added no value. The 3RR note was a warning not to edit war but to talk, and here you are. Jytdog (talk) 22:59, 1 October 2017 (UTC)

Birth year confusion
[edit]What is the citation for the birth year? I tried to view it, but it no longer exists. Is there a valid citation? Have looked everywhere but cannot find one. 50.225.204.51 (talk) 04:27, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

Birthday redux
[edit]@MellowOffspring: Responding to this revert. His birthday comes from what seems to be a reliable self-published source, and calculating a person's year of birth is a routine calculation (there's even a template for it), not OR. Combining data points like this ought to be an acceptable calculation; WP:DOB's "no original research" provision is based on an exceptional case that involved guesswork and conflicting results. All that said, I see now that the subject doesn't really want his date of birth on Wikipedia; suggest instead adding 1982 or 1983 (age 41–42), citing the Spokesman-Review. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 03:04, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, the subject has said in a few outlets that he does not want his birthdate on Wikipedia. And personally, I don't think a single number in a puff piece in a small paper is a particularly reliable source (according to WP:RS, "Human interest reporting is generally not as reliable as news reporting, and may not be subject to the same rigorous standards of fact-checking and accuracy".) However, given that this is an area of constant dispute on this page, having SOME number there might prevent constant reverts, so I won't object. This approach is blessed by WP:DOB, which says "If a subject complains about our inclusion of their date of birth, or the person is borderline notable, err on the side of caution and simply list the year, provided that there is a reliable source for it." MellowOffspring (talk) 21:09, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
- Actioned with a hidden comment. FWIW, doesn't really seem like a human interest story. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 00:58, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

There should be some mention of Adam Conover's podcast career more than his podcast "Factually!" He also hosted a podcast called "Humans Who Make Games" and has made guest appearances in many others such as "Not Another D&D Podcast" Skyfighter625 (talk) 00:53, 7 May 2024 (UTC)
- Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. Charliehdb (talk) 09:34, 7 May 2024 (UTC)
