Date of Birth

[edit]

I added "citation needed" to Mr. Sheppard's birthdate because of two things. First, if you Google his name and read associated articles, you quickly learn that his birthdate is a mystery. He does not reveal it to reporters, and there is no verifiable source of a DOB. Secondly, Mr. Sheppard appeared on WFAN with host Steve Somers prior to the final NY Giants home game of the regular season, because it could have been his final Giants game.... Somers said something about Mr. Sheppard being in his early 80s, and Mr. Sheppard did not raise issue with that (any WFAN listener knows that Somers is notorious for joking around, but this wasn't a joke). Additionally, I just find it very hard to believe by waiting near the players' parking lot at Yankee Stadium prior to games that the man is in his middle-90s.... he walks totally fine and unassisted into the ballpark. The only reason why he left the Giants was because he wanted to spend more time with his family, not because of old age or poor health. Riphamilton 01:05, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As Sheppard graduated college in 1931, the IMDB entry for his birthdate is probably right. DLMahnken 12:34, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have just posted (with citation) that Sheppard graduated from prep school in 1910. So he's about 95. He is in very good health for his age, but having met him, the number is still credible. I'm not surprised he didn't dispute Somers' comment. He seems to consider his age a private topic, and as such he's certainly not going to revise the number UPWARD. Marley23 19 April 2006

The Associated Press did an article about Sheppard's anticipated return, scheduled for tomorrow. They say a team source confirms the Oct. 12 1910 birthdate. Someone else put it into the article as a link, and I put the birthdate back into the top of the article. Marley23 4:16, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

Conflict

[edit]

The article now states both a DOB and the birthdate is a mystery thing. This should be fixed. SpikeZoft 17:30, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

2007 Home Opener

[edit]

Did Bob announce yesterday? (i.e. the 2007 home opener?)

2008

[edit]

I removed a recent edit saying Bob Sheppard might appear in Yankee Stadium in 2008. Unless he actually shows up, it's not worth mentioning. Storkynoob (talk) 19:55, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Retirement

[edit]

According the New York Times article that is cited in the bit about his retirement, there's only talk from a friend and agent of his, a one Paul Doherty, that he is retiring. In that same article, however, Mr. Sheppard denies that he has decided to retire. Quote: "I never said I’m not returning. I never, never said I’m not returning and I say it to you now."

For that matter, an article[1] was put up on the Yankees website stating that Mr. Sheppard has no plans on retiring at this time. It cites statements made by Mr. Sheppard's son made through New York Yankees director of public relations Jason Zillo. Quote: "We have spoken to Paul Sheppard [Bob Sheppard's son], and he was very clear to us that the report made is categorically untrue... Paul Sheppard has not said anything remotely like that."

"Four grandchildren; all girls"

[edit]

It said in the article that Bob Sheppard had "four granchildren, all girls". WRONG! I ran on the boys track team in high school with Paul Sheppard, who was his grandson, and he obviously was not a girl. I don't know where that information was obtained, but it was obviously erroneous. That's why I edited out the passage where it said that his grandchildren were "all girls."
