Football
[edit]It shouldn't be that hard to go from here to a list of rosters of Bowling Green football teams, but I've given up for the moment. Haven't tried other universities, but my dad says he played for Bowling Green. Hackwrench 00:18, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
- Check out the Football Database. Don't know if he played professionally at all, but if so, he might be on there with college listed. Otherwise, I don't immediately know a way to check, because the Official BGSU Football site only has an archive going back to 1999. Tstreet 02:09, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Instead of putting the rosters and other football items on this page, you should create more articles. We have a season "template" developed at the Wikipedia:WikiProject College football that you can use for a 2006 season page and you can look at other pages on what to put into pages like Bowling Green Falcons football and Bowling Green Falcons. Your head coach also needs a page Gregg Brandon. See Wikipedia:WikiProject College football/MasterTeamTable for links to other articles to use an an example. If you have questions you can ask me on my talk page or at the project. MECU≈talk 16:25, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
Alumni section too long
[edit]The list of notable alumni in this article is way too long. Please consider making a new article and moving most of this list into that article as we've done with other universities. --ElKevbo 21:08, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
- I understand that the alumni list was quite long before, but having looked at other University wiki pages, I feel the changes made to it could have been made in a far better manner. BG's notable Olympians are not mentioned, nor is the fact that two of their hockey players were on the 1980 US "Miracle on Ice" Olympic hockey team, which I feel is more than worthy of mention. Tstreet (talk) 16:09, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
It might help to add a display "box" which helps keep the appearance neat and orderly. It is common in "Notable Alumni" sections for other colleges and universities. Andrewincowtown (talk) 21:29, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
- Or maybe just a list? Something to break up that massive paragraph would be nice. If you know how to do the "box" thing can you take a stab at it? Kendall-K1 (talk) 22:03, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
- It is fine the way it currently is. Other universities (e.g. University of Notre Dame, University of Florida) will do a short paragraph and add {{Main article}} to the top of the section with the separate article. They'll even include photographs of those who are notable. Corkythehornetfan (ping me) 22:09, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
- The key word here is "short". Like the one at University of Florida. The paragraph there is half the size of the one here, even though they have far more notable alums, about eight times as many. Kendall-K1 (talk) 22:58, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
notable programs
[edit]bg, i know we have more notable programs than this. what about our photochemical sciences? org. development? -- brian, 17 march 2007

Fair use rationale for Image:BGSUFalcons.jpg
[edit]Image:BGSUFalcons.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 00:53, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
Maintenance tags
[edit]removed some citation tags due to requirements being met.--Bhockey10 (talk) 17:19, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
- This article falls far short of Wikipedia's criteria. As I had already noted on your talk page the last time the templates were removed, please do not delete maintenance templates without actually fixing the issue. --Kralizec! (talk) 17:23, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
- You removed more than just "citation tags" and those issues were clearly *not* addressed to I've replaced them. This article is in pretty poor shape and removing the maintenance templates noting that fact doesn't improve the article. --ElKevbo (talk) 17:24, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
ok I noticed all of those little citation needed tags were gone so I thought it was ok ElKevbo is correct- the article is in poor shape. for one, it's way too wordy.--Bhockey10 (talk) 17:31, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
- Examples of good university articles include Ohio Wesleyan University and Dartmouth College ... both of which have over 200 citations, as opposed to this article's eight. --Kralizec! (talk) 17:38, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
"Yale of the Midwest"
[edit]I removed the statement "also known as the "Yale of the Midwest" along with the source (which was a deadlink when I tried to open it) because the source was the Bowling Green website. Using the BGSU website (or any school's website) for any type of outstanding claim isn't a good idea simply because of potential bias. School websites are informative but also serve as a promotional tool for their respective school, so they can't be used uniformly to verify all information. Generally, school websites are great resources for referencing the school's history, programs available, faculty, enrollment stats, etc., but not for rankings, anything "best" or "one of the greatest", or anything similar. As for "Yale of the Midwest" there was a similar discussion at Talk:Brigham Young University/Archive 3#Harvard of the West. Basically the consensus was that such names are usually only local and many schools often refer to themselves as a Harvard or Yale of a certain area. These are generally forms of boosterism as opposed to a legitimate nickname. In doing a simple Google search for "Yale of the Midwest" (in quotes), I found references to Beloit College, Grinnell College, Youngstown State University, and Miami University as "Yale of the Midwest" on the first page with further references to Denison University, University of Michigan, Northwestern University, and additional ones to Beloit later in the results. --JonRidinger (talk) 20:28, 14 September 2010 (UTC)
- Looks like a possible vandalism revert. The cite was a bad link for a reason. I've NEVER seen any BGSU promotional material claiming to be the "Yale of the Midwest" or heard any students, alumni, etc claiming to be. BG is a typical state university. Some of those other schools you mentioned are Public Ivies so that would be a more reasonable thing for them, but I don't believe any official school promotional material says that. Note: I have heard BYU called "Notre Dame of the West" since their decision to move the football team to independent. Bhockey10 (talk) 20:45, 14 September 2010 (UTC)
- Haha...I like the "Notre Dame of the West" for BYU because there are similarities besides the football independence! Anyway, in all fairness, the "Yale of the Midwest" results were all sources that would probably never pass WP:RS because they were mostly personal blogs (so some could've been in jest), were from the particular school itself, or the reference was saying (like for Michigan) it "likes to think of itself as a Harvard or Yale of the Midwest." In any case, I just wanted to fend off any potential edit wars since I couldn't see the source this allegedly came from. Even it was on the BG website, it wouldn't belong on this article. --JonRidinger (talk) 21:25, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

Daughter
[edit]My daughter is seriously looking into BGSU for the 2011, she would be a freshman. Not to be rude or crude but as a father I must ask, I have heard from numerous people that BGSU is high in numbers on STD's, mainly in the girls. Anyone out there that can HONESTLY answer this question I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks, Shane Dunigan sdunigan@profabu.com —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.230.128.144 (talk) 18:33, 14 October 2010 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, please note that article talk pages are not forums. I remember either reading, hearing, or seeing somewhere that it is basically a myth created by a flawed study back in the 1980s. Myths are quite common in university cultures, If anyone can find more reliable info on the study and controversy that resulted- that would be a notable and interesting bit of info for the history section. Bhockey10 (talk) 23:51, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
Cleanup and Expansion
[edit]I recently had a university-related article receive GA status and haven't worked on the BGSU article much lately. I want to bring the article up to GA standards. This article isn't too bad, with mostly citation, referencing, organization and formatting issues. That said, one of the most glaring issues I see is that the History section is rather light for a university with a rather long and established history and tradition. If anyone wants to add to the history section (with reliable well sourced info) that would greatly help the article's push toward GA status. Bhockey10 (talk) 23:51, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
Faculty unionization
[edit]A recent edit added information about the AAUP union at BGSU and the state's response. I removed that edit because it was very poorly written e.g. "The union is overwhelmingly supported by more than 60% of the faculty members." The only source that was provided does make this sound like an interesting and relevant story but it needs to be included with appropriate tone and an accurate description. It should also be kept to one or two sentences given its impact on the entire history of this university. ElKevbo (talk) 18:32, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
- I agree, the information is rather trivial. The user who continues to place the information has repeatedly avoided the fact that I used some of the info with a ref and placed the unionized info in the first part of the Faculty section. It reads, "Since November 2010, BGSU full-time faculty have been represented in collective bargaining by the BGSU Faculty Association, a chapter of the American Association of University Professors.[111]". It might be worth the mention (one sentence in the Faculty section) but not needed multiple times at various places around the article. If the user continues to avoid the fact that is mentioned, and continues adding it at multiple locations within the article it will have to be taken as vandalism/disruptive editing. Bhockey10 (talk) 19:42, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
Give me more
[edit]I'd love to see info on:
- Degree breakdown by subject
- Gender and racial breakdown
- Profile of time-to-graduate
- Tuition trends, with grants, loans and scholarships
- Admissions, including SAT, etc.
- Student religious groups and worship facilities
- Several of those items, particularly detailed major information and tuition data, are typically omitted from college and university articles as being too detailed and time-sensitive. WP:UNIGUIDE is the current guidance on typical article content and structure; it might be worth looking into if you're interested in significantly contributing to this and similar articles. It's not a mold we have to fit in every way but it is a thoughtful set of guidelines with widespread acceptance and adherence. ElKevbo (talk) 03:38, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
- I agree that too much information is not helpful, this article has too little. Perhaps a link to the details is the right way to go, but to not have it included at all seems like a mistake. The information is certainly notable.Lfstevens (talk) 07:51, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the detailed copyedit but I have to agree with ElKevbo here. Many of the items you listed are not encouraged for Wikipedia.
- Degree breakdown: " Wikipedia is not a directory, do not attempt to list every major, degree, or program offered in this or any section." notable, unique degrees are fine but not every degree, esp at large universities that have 100s.
- Gender and racial breakdown: Yes, It probably should be included as part of the first paragraph in the student life section that talks about student demographics.
- Profile of time-to-graduate: No, the university is a standard American public university and has no unique time to graduation. (mostly 4-5 years)
- Tuition trends, with grants, loans and scholarships: No, per ElKevbo's comments
- Admissions, including SAT, etc: No, nothing to unique I.e. super selective such as Harvard)
- Student religious groups and worship facilities: No, public university with no significant connection to a specific religious groups, then mention that they are offered in Student life orgs is fine. Bhockey10 (talk) 18:39, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
Former Buildings?
[edit]There's a sort of "tour" of present day campus; should there be references to buildings that the university razed & when as well as their respective locations on the "present day" campus? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.187.253.130 (talk) 22:19, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
- Former buildings can be included in either the campus section or history section. BUT college campuses grow and change over time and many former buildings would not be notable enough, or have enough sources to cite info from. If there are historically significant former buildings those would be good to include. Bhockey10 (talk) 19:27, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
Cleveland Browns training camp?
[edit]Should it be mentioned in the article's history section that the Cleveland Browns held their first training camp (and numerous training camps afterward) at the school? I'm not sure it should, but just wanted to put it out there in case editors think it's worthy of a mention. I'm happy to add it myself if people think it is, but I'm mindful that this is up for a GA review and so don't want to rock the boat too much.--Batard0 (talk) 19:05, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
- That sounds very interesting. It might be useful info for either the history section or athletics section. If another user objects/removes or moves it, it wouldn't hurt the GA Nom. Just make sure to spell check before adding it and cite your sources for the info. Bhockey10 (talk) 19:42, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

1. Well-written: | ||
1a. the prose is clear, concise, and understandable to an appropriately broad audience; spelling and grammar are correct. | I am unable to find any remaining copyright violations. The prose is very readable, with mostly concise sentences and great readability throughout.
1b. it complies with the Manual of Style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation. | Two small lists, which could be improved if they were made multi-column to save whitespace, but no major and no other minor issues. I columnized the lists.
2. Verifiable with no original research:
2a. it contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline. | Randomly selected excerpts were verifiable.
2b. reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose). | Sources for all notable alumni, presidents, etc. No controversies that I can see.
2c. it contains no original research. | As far as I can tell. No exceptional claims.
3. Broad in its coverage:
3a. it addresses the main aspects of the topic. | Thank you, the tuition and graduation rates make it seem much less like a public relations brochure. I was unable to find any mention of crime on campus or major controversies, either. The few minor controversies I did find would have BLP issues if they were included, so forget that.
3b. it stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style). | Lengthy but not overly so.
4. Neutral: it represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each. | It still seems somewhat like a marketing brochure, but I can not find any reliable sources with which to do anything about it. Hope for a faculty sex scandal if you plan to try to make it through FAC.
5. Stable: it does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute. | Dashboard looks fine.
6. Illustrated, if possible, by media such as images, video, or audio:
6a. media are tagged with their copyright statuses, and valid non-free use rationales are provided for non-free content. | Sampled a handful, all ok.
6b. media are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions. | Very nice photos.
7. Overall assessment. | ✓ Pass Listed. Cupco 22:04, 30 August 2012 (UTC) |
GA Reply
[edit]Cupco- Thanks for the GA review!
Reply to 1A, Copy vio: I'm not sure how those facts on the nickname escaped myself, peer review, and copyedit. I think it may have been paraphrased but not enough. I reworked the wording and paraphrased better, please have a look at those sentences and see if it suits you better. I believe that was toward the top of the Early growth and development section
Reply to 3A, Coverage: I agree the grad/attrition rates and tuition are missing. I'll work on putting together that information this evening, there's some good data here: http://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/?q=Bowling+Green+State&s=all&id=201441#retgrad and I'll look to bring in a cpl more reliable sources as well. I'm a little weary of adding crime data and have not seen it included in other GA and Featured university-related articles. According to the data, BG's campus is one of the safer ones for a larger university but I haven't found articles to that, safe campus awards, etc... really anything notable regarding campus safety. http://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/?q=Bowling+Green+State&s=all&id=201441#crime Also, other than no notable murders or crimes, I have not seen anything on big/notable controversies. The only thing I can think of, occurred while I was on business in Toledo in early Aug. BGSU demolished a 1920s kit home that held staff offices. It was not on a historic registrar and had been modified so much, the university argued it was not representative of a kit home and basically beyond repair or additional renovations. http://www.toledoblade.com/Education/2012/07/31/BGSU-building-supporters-gather-to-protest-demolition.html http://www.sent-trib.com/front-page/updated-demolition-of-pop-culture-house-begins If the property is used for a new health center, some mention of the site and the house could be added, but I personally wouldn't call it a notable controversy. Bhockey10 (talk) 21:13, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
- That's cool. Take your time to google at least a few excerpts from each section please -- when I was looking at verifiability there were definitely some other very close paraphrases (but I didn't make a note of them, sorry.) If you want me to check back before the full 14 days, just say so on my talk page when you're ready. Cupco 21:21, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the extra work to clear up those issues. ✓ Pass Congratulations! Cupco 22:08, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, for the review! It's a nice honor after myself and some of the other regular editors put it extensive work toward the GA status. Cheers and happy editing! Bhockey10 (talk) 00:37, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

Fix
