Requested move 17 October 2021
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: Daniel Cronin moved to Dan Cronin and DAB created at Daniel Cronin. per discussion consensus, WP:COMMONNAME, and WP:PRIMARY. Normally I would agree that we should have a second discussion about whether or not the outfielder or this politician are the primary "Dan"s, but it is extremely unlikely from the sources and pages that it would fall in the dead outfielder's favor. Please, let's avoid the needless bureaucracy and just execute all the unambiguous moves at once. I am not changing anything about Daniel Cronin (bishop), as I believe there is no consensus here for it, and it was not covered by the nom. It is therefore more ambiguous. Please start another RM about this other related issue if you feel strongly about it. Wikipedia policy and guidelines support unambiguous moves which forego needless process for the sake of process. If you have any concerns, feel free to bring them up on my talk as always. (closed by non-admin page mover) — Shibbolethink (♔ ♕) 12:52, 3 November 2021 (UTC)
Daniel Cronin → Dan Cronin – Nickname 'Dan' is more commonly used in sources. See WP:NICKNAME. Edge3 (talk) 23:36, 16 October 2021 (UTC)
- This is a contested technical request (permalink). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 10:51, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

- Daniel Cronin → Dan Cronin – Nickname 'Dan' is more commonly used in sources. See WP:NICKNAME. Edge3 (talk) 23:36, 16 October 2021 (UTC)
- This appears to be correct. Other similar names are Daniel Cronin (bishop) (moved today by the requestor) and Dan Cronin (baseball), with the bishop having a small lead in pageviews. From the look of it, the dab should go to Dan Cronin (disambiguation), the bishop should occupy Daniel Cronin after this is moved as I don't see any other Daniel Cronins. ASUKITE 23:54, 16 October 2021 (UTC)
- I'm nervous about keeping the dab page at Dan Cronin, because it includes Daniel Cronin. I'd be happy to swap the politician and the dab page, so that the politician is at Dan Cronin and the dab page is at Daniel Cronin, and leave everything else the same. Happy to do this if you guys agree. Dr. Vogel (talk) 00:04, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
- Asukite brings up a great point about the bishop. Since the bishop seems to be the only one who uses the full name 'Daniel', shouldn't he occupy the Daniel Cronin article? Then, that means that the dab would be Daniel Cronin (disambiguation). Edge3 (talk) 00:11, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
- Dan Cronin is a disambig of 3 choices. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 10:44, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
- Support per nomination. Subject's WP:COMMONNAME is indeed Dan Cronin, not Daniel Cronin, while also concurrently supporting the move of Dan Cronin disambiguation page → Daniel Cronin. All three men listed on the dab page are named "Daniel" and the bishop is already disambiguated as Daniel Cronin (bishop). If there is no consensus that the Illinois political figure's prominence exceeds that of the 1884 outfielder Dan Cronin (baseball), I would alternatively support the form Dan Cronin (politician). —Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 15:31, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
- So, if I understand correctly, I think what you're suggesting is exactly the same as I'm suggesting: move Daniel Cronin to Dan Cronin, and move the dab page Dan Cronin to Daniel Cronin. So essentially, simply swap Dan Cronin and Daniel Cronin. If people agree, I'm happy to do the moves. Dr. Vogel (talk) 15:40, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, exactly as you originally suggested and, again, if consensus skews towards use of the form Dan Cronin (politician), I would also support "Dan Cronin" redirecting to the Daniel Cronin dab page. —Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 15:51, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
- I think the politician would be more relevant than the 19th century baseball player, but we'll see if anyone disagrees. Dr. Vogel (talk) 15:58, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

- Support DAB at Daniel Cronin, moving this page to Dan Cronin (politician) per above.--Ortizesp (talk) 21:29, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
- Support the swap of Daniel Cronin and Dan Cronin. TiggerJay (talk) 06:02, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
- Support Dan Cronin (politician). It's clear from the discussion above that this should be moved to use "Dan", the only question is whether he is the primary topic. I say this isn't a good place for SMALLDETAILS and none of the three are primary. User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 18:42, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
- Post-closing comment: it's not immediately obvious to me that the politician is "more notable" than the bishop, but I agree with the closer it is safe to assume he is more notable than the 19th century baseballer who played two games. User:力 (powera, π, ν) 23:21, 3 November 2021 (UTC)
- @力: The bishop is commonly known by his full name "Daniel", not by the nickname "Dan". Therefore, you could argue that the bishop's article should be Daniel Cronin and the DAB should be Daniel Cronin (disambiguation). I agree with Shibbolethink's finding that the bishop was slightly outside the scope of this discussion, and you could certainly open an RM on that issue. Edge3 (talk) 00:27, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
