Actually, it's more the other way around, in that 8notes.com took their Kabalevsky biography from the Wikipedia article. If you look at the bottom of the 8notes article for Kabalevsky, you'll see in small type "This biography is published under the GNU Licence", where the GNU license is a direct link to this article. Article name[edit]

This should be moved to "Dmitri Borisovich Kabalevsky". The -iy transcription is nonsense in English. But the computer says this page already exists, so I guess somebody moved it from that to this, quite lamentable. See Dmitri Shostakovich, or Tchaikovsky: no -iy!!!!! Date of death[edit]

A google search for "Kabalevsky February 1987" throws up three dates: 14 Feb, 16 Feb, 18 Feb 1987. Russian WP has 14 Feb, we have 18 Feb. What's the true date, and how do we know for sure? -- Jack of Oz ... speak! ... 11:36, 25 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

His death was reported in the 18 February 1987 edition of the NY Times, based on a Tass report dated the previous day 17 February. From this, it's possible to conclude that there's no way he could have died as late as the 18th. The Russian article says it happened on 14 February and many of the other interlanguage articles agree (not all, admittedly). Given the usually protracted delay between the death of a Soviet celebrity and the public announcement, a 3-day gap is not at all surprising. Dmitry or Dmitri[edit]

Is there any reason why we should continue with the unorthodox romanisation Dmitry? Did Kabalevsky use this spelling himself when writing in English? That would be the only justification, really. Apparently at one time we spelt it Dmitriy (see Article name above), and the remedy chosen was to drop the i. Dropping the y would have been the thing to do.

I'd like to see this moved to Dmitri Kabalevsky (and without the patronymic). Do I have any supporters? -- Jack of Oz ^{[pleasantries]} 22:34, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know, but the spelling Dmitry seems to be more common on Wikipedia, if the page on the name is to be believed. Rothorpe (talk) 23:18, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

FWIW, I have 10 CDs devoted to Kabalevsky. Only two use Dmitry, others all use Dmitri -- and what's especially wierd is that there are two discs on the ASV label, with the same conductor/orchestra, and they differ (with Dmitry being on the one from 1996 and Dmitri being on the one from 1998). Obviously this isn't really any sort of proof, but it's a good point toward common name being Dmitri. Kabalevsky and Gavriil Popov[edit]

The article covers Kabalevsky's role in the 1948 congress of Composers' Union. However, I have found that this documentary titled "Khachaturian: The virtuous Soviet Armenian composer" claims that Kabalevsky suggested his name to be replaced with Gavriil Popov's name, who was condemned in said congress as a formalist composer. My question is: should be this be added to the article?
