Article to add
[edit][1] regarding the potential of season 5. Not sure how to incorporate it yet. --MASEM (t) 05:07, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah I saw this at EW. I think we could add this when a final season renewal decision is made to gain greater insight into the network's reasons, but I'm up for any better ideas. Let's cross our fingers for another Fringe season. Ruby 2010/2013 05:11, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
- The part from Riley on losing money is probably something to add now, but yea, it might be easier once we get closer to the renewal announcements. --MASEM (t) 05:23, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Fringe (TV series) taskforce proposal
[edit]Hi all! I'm proposing a new taskforce for Fringe. Interested editors can find the proposal page at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Fringe (TV series). I hope it goes successfully. Thanks, Ruby 2010/2013 04:16, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
Dark Angel
[edit]In what way is this show related to Dark Angel? I looked at the references but I couldn't find any mention in the articles that were linked. 220.245.184.11 (talk) 12:50, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
- It doesn't seem to be supported by the sources, so I have removed it. Яehevkor ✉ 12:52, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
End of Eternity by Asimov
[edit]I am aware that speculation is generally frowned on, but is there any evidence of influence here. Episode 79 "The End of All Things", giving details of the Observers, and their influence on the overall arc is very similar. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Excelis4 (talk • contribs) 15:30, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
- Sometimes they allude to other literary works or television shows. When they moved to Fridays, the first episode on that time-slot was entitled "The Firefly," alluding to the show Firefly, which was on Fridays. Whether they were joking about their chances of getting cancelled or just making a point, I don't know. The point is, it most likely served as an allusion. GA Review

- This review is transcluded from Talk:Fringe (TV series)/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.
Reviewer: Gen. Quon (talk · contribs) 21:24, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
- Intro: This needs to desperately be expanded. The lede for any article should adequately summarize the entire article, but this only explains the story and what season its on. Maybe model it after this.
- Done. Looks to briefly describe the major sections of the article in sufficient detail to adequately summarize the entire article. Akihironihongo (talk) 03:29, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
- Intro: No need for citations in the intro. I'd move them to their respective locations (i.e., [1] in "Conception", [4] in "Reception", etc.)
- Premise: Maybe add citations for each of the seasons, like season 2
- Premise: Move the citation after "Walternate" to the end of the sentence or paragraph
- Glyph Code: While Fringepedia has the code, I don't think it counts as a reliable source, so I'd remove it.
- Recurring Characters: Explain who Nadine Park, also, why is she the only character with a citation?
- Production: The last sentence talks about newel et al, this should be moved and merged to the reception section
- Production: Is there any way casting can be expanded like Production or Conception?
- Casting is actually just about as long as Production (if you ignore the large quote). So should both Production and Casting be expanded or should neither? Akihironihongo (talk) 03:31, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
- Casting: Don't forget that a computer-generated Leonard Nimoy appeared in the episode "Letters of Transit"
- Home Video Releases: The second sentence of the first paragraph is unsourced
- Done. Simply removed, as it seemed unnecessary. Drovethrughosts (talk) 16:03, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
- Home Video Releases: Can you expounded up the third season disc at all?
- Maybe merge "Home Video Releases" into "Other Media" and call it "Media", having subheadings for "Video Releases", "Games", and "Comics
- Reception: "In its 2008 Year in Review, Television Without Pity declared…" This sentence needs citations after every direct quote. Also, remove the space before [84]
- Reception: "The Daily Herald comments that…" Change to "The Daily Herald commented that"
- Reception: "Entertainment Weekly, which stated "The best new show of the year took a few weeks to grow on me, but now it's a full-blown addiction",[87] the LA Times, calling Walter Bishop one of the best characters of 2008, saying that "the role of the modern-day mad scientist could so easily have been a disaster, but the 'Fringe' writers and the masterful John Noble have conspired to create a character that seems, as trite as it sounds, more Shakespearean than sci-fi."" HUGE run-on sentence. Break this up and rephrase. I'm not entirely sure if it counts as a sentence because the syntax and verbs make no sense. Try "Entertainment Weekly stated "The best new show of the year took a few weeks to grow on me, but now it's a full-blown addiction".[87] The LA Times called Walter Bishop one of the best characters of 2008, noting that "the role of the modern-day mad scientist could so easily have been a disaster, but the 'Fringe' writers and the masterful John Noble have conspired to create a character that seems, as trite as it sounds, more Shakespearean than sci-fi."[88]
- Reception: "Chicago Tribune states that some episodes are…" Change 'states' to 'stated'
- Ratings: The last sentence of the first paragraph is unsourced
- Ratings: "Further promoted by the critical reaction…but asserts that the move will "re-animate" the show." Change 'asserts' to 'asserted'
- Renewal: Watch out for some of the sentences that still have visages of reports before the series was renewed. Make sure they clearly say "before the series was renewed for a final season…" or something like that
- International Broadcast: A vast majority of this section is simple unsourced and won't fly until there are reliable citations attached
- Done. I removed all unsourced material. Drovethrughosts (talk) 15:00, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
- Awards: Maybe expand and name the big ones the show has won, like Emmys, if any at all. Also, add a citation
- References: These all need to be consistent, such as M/D/Y, or MM-DD-YYYY, etc. There are too many different types here
- Done. Used YYYY-MM-DD format. Akihironihongo (talk) 00:41, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
- References: What makes BuddyTV, Seriable, TV Show on DVD, Jib Hi-Fi reliable sources?
- Done? In the context of the section in which the BuddyTV and Seriable refs are located, I think they are verifiable enough to keep in the article (I really don't think BuddyTV is going to photoshop in "observers were here" in the title sequence for personal gain). As for TV show on DVD, I'm not sure if it's unreliable, so I didn't delete the reference; however, I added a reference to amazon.com, which has the release date on it. Finally, I replaced jbhifi references with ones from ezydvd.com.au. Akihironihongo (talk) 02:59, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
- For BuddyTV, the casting ref is fine, it's nothing that's controversial or can be challenged (Mark Valley and Kirk Acevdeo cast in Fringe is obviously a fact), plus there's a another ref for it by TV Guide. The other one for the "Letters of Transit" intro, again, nothing questionable is being presented there, just an article that displays the intro (the video is supplied by Fox Broadcasting themselves via YouTube). TVShowsOnDVD is definitely a reliable source, I'm not sure how to defend it, but I've been a browser of that site for years and it's always posted reliable news. Plus, it was acquired by TV Guide back in 2007. Seriable is the only questionable source, it's definitely not a site I'd use to cite breaking news, but only fansites and blogs have articles that discuss trivia like that. If you're fine with BuddyTV, then there is this. Drovethrughosts (talk) 23:01, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
- Done. Replaced with a Variety article. Drovethrughosts (talk) 15:00, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
- References: Some refs link "TV by the Numbers", others don't
- Links: Refs 14, 36, 42, and 71 are dead
- Done. All dead links fixed. Drovethrughosts (talk) 15:13, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
- Links: 41 and 89 are expiring soon, I would webarchive them to be safe
- Done. They were actually the same ref, so I removed the duplication. Drovethrughosts (talk) 15:00, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
- Links: Ref 38 needs a registration add the {{Subscription required}} template
Those are the big issues I see. On hold for seven days.--Gen. Quon (talk) 21:55, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
- Things are looking really good. I'll give you guys a little more time to work on this if you need it since it is a big article. :)--Gen. Quon (talk) 02:18, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
- Also, now that I've started to watch the show, don't forget that Leonard Nimoy appeared in the last episode and will probably be in the next one as well.--Gen. Quon (talk) 02:20, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
OK, everything looks really good; almost there! The only thing I can really suggest is that you site the plot like this, aka using primary sources. I would also add some of the background and development info into the lead. Other than that, I think it is looking a lot better.--Gen. Quon (talk) 02:33, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
- I've added primary sources to the Premise section and added another paragraph to lead regarding the series' format (procedural/serial). Drovethrughosts (talk) 21:39, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
- Intro looks great now. Only tiny thing left; Refs 1-14 have Fringe bolded, which I would remove. Do this, and I will pass the article.Gen. Quon (talk) 02:27, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
- Done. Just realized they were bolded because they were linking to the article itself (duh!), so I just removed the serieslink parameter. Drovethrughosts (talk) 12:54, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
- Excellent! Very good article, and I appreciate the effort you guys went to to fix it up. Passing.--Gen. Quon (talk) 17:41, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

References
[edit]Per the GA review, I'm moving citations out of the introduction. However, I'm not sure where to put citations 1 and 2. So, I've decided to put them here and allow users who know where to put them to put them in their respective places.
Akihironihongo (talk) 23:02, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
- These references could be placed in the second paragraph in the Conception subsection, next to [21][22]], but I checked those references and they source the material in the first sentence perfectly. I don't think those other two are really needed, unless someone else thinks otherwise. I plan on helping out, so I'll be doing some more GA tweaks tomorrow. For anyone else who is planning on helping, I suggest commenting under the notes left by Gen. Quon, leaving a Done or commenting what you did, so we know what's been done. Show tense
[edit]It is a show versus it was a show.
It has been reverted to 'is' at least once that I am aware of, by Masem, with the odd edit summary that seemed to suggest that if the show was, then it somehow ceases to exist. I disagree. The program is no longer in production, there is no film planned and all of the cast has moved on to other projects. Why not call a spade a spade and put the show in its proper tense. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 15:25, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
- It's a Wiki-standard - works of media that have completed their runs but can still be viewed or enjoyed in some reasonable manner like home video or streaming, are treated as still existing, and thus we use "is", per WP:TISWAS and the links within. If a show completed its run but no archival copies were made such that there's no way to view the bulk of the show, we'd likely call that "was" since we can no longer see that work. --MASEM (t) 15:30, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

Description
[edit]- The series has been described as a hybrid of The X-Files, Altered States, and The Twilight Zone.
The influence and homage to the X-Files is overt, so no argument there. In some respects, Fringe is the rightful successor to the X-Files, in more ways than one. However, I'm really not seeing the rationale for comparing it to Altered States and The Twilight Zone. I mean, sure, both Altered States and Fringe use isolation tanks, but so what, that's hardly a reason to describe it as a direct influence. And yes, there is drug usage in both, but again, so what. And The Twilight Zone? Sorry, I'm just not seeing it. The entire premise of Altered States and The Twilight Zone bears no real comparison to Fringe, so I question the wisdom of including this statement in the lead. Instead, it should focus more on the similarity with the X-Files, which is demonstrable and easy to prove. Viriditas (talk) 03:50, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
- It mentions Altered States and The Twilight Zone because they were influences. Please see the Conception subsection for the references. Drovethrughosts (talk) 12:03, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
- It says they inspired the development, but that's several parsecs away from the show being a hybrid. I'll look at the sources, but it still doesn't sound right. For example, Lorde may be inspired by Jay-Z and Kanye West, but that doesn't make her music a hybrid of those influences. Viriditas (talk) 21:57, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
- Sources
- The New York Times: "They traded ideas about beloved fantasy films and television series — “The X-Files,” “Altered States,” the early movies of David Cronenberg — but also looked carefully at procedural crime dramas dominating the networks. 'When 6 of the Top 10 shows are ‘Law & Order’ and ‘C.S.I.,’' Mr. Orci said, 'you have to be a fool not to go study what it is that they’re doing.' Cross-pollinating these genres, they came up with three characters — a neophyte F.B.I. agent (played by Anna Torv), a brilliant but mad scientist (John Noble) and his wayward son (Joshua Jackson)..."[2]
- So in this instance, it's not a hybrid of the above shows, but of genres. Big difference. Viriditas (talk) 22:39, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
- If you think it needs fixing, then by all means, fix it. Drovethrughosts (talk) 22:41, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks. First, let me fix the ref for THR. Viriditas (talk) 22:44, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
- Ref fixed.[3] Viriditas (talk) 22:49, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
- Temporary fix to the description more inline with the sources.[4] I'm sure it can be improved further. Viriditas (talk) 22:53, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
Described as being "influenced by film and television shows such as Lost,..."
Not sure how Lost, which was made later, could have "influenced" this show. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.55.126.18 (talk) 02:30, 12 October 2017 (UTC)
- Fringe aired from 2008–2013 and Lost aired from 2004–2010, so Lost did begin first. They were also both created and produced by J. J. Abrams. The #Conception section under Development apparently explains why the show was influenced by Lost. – Rhinopias (talk) 04:53, 12 October 2017 (UTC)

External links modified
[edit]Hello fellow Wikipedians,
I have just modified one external link on Fringe (TV series). Please take a moment to review my edit. If you have any questions, or need the bot to ignore the links, or the page altogether, please visit this simple FaQ for additional information. I made the following changes:
- Added archive https://web.archive.org/web/20110417001115/http://fringepedia.net/wiki/Fringepedia to http://fringepedia.net/wiki/Fringepedia

Unearthed
[edit]We previously had the "Unearthed" episode labeled as episode 11 of season 2 per how it originally aired, but editor Thelonggoneblues has made various changes (see Fringe (season 1) and Fringe (season 2)). I feel there should be a consensus to how we should treat this episode on Wikipedia. So, the facts are:
- The episode was produced as the final episode of season 1 and was meant to be a standalone episode to be placed anywhere (expect for Charlie reappearing), meaning it'd have to be placed in season 1 for it to make sense, story-wise.
- It aired as episode 11 of season 2 as a "special episode".
- It is included on the season 2 DVD/Blu-rays as an extra episode and not given an episode number.
- It is labeled season 2, episode 11 on iTunes, Apple TV, and Prime. I believe it also streams on HBO Max, but I don't have access.
With that, we either label it season 1, episode 21; season 2, episode 11; or as "bonus" episode in either season 1 or 2, where it is located in the episode table but separated with a different header (see Breaking Bad (season 5)#Episodes as an example). Determining how we label "Unearthed" effects various things, such as episode numbers in episode articles (which Thelonggoneblues has changed), season episode counts, and the ratings table at List of Fringe episodes#Ratings because now some of the episodes are off by one.
