Fined for anti smoking stance

[edit]

This is mentioned in 92-93 season.. This should be a major item in the main section as it effectively terminated his career. Can someone w ith strong knowledge correct this? Apault (talk) 09:24, 1 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Bowling all-rounder or batting all-rounder?

[edit]

As per my Edit Summary where I just changed "Matthews' 'role' from 'batting all-rounder' to 'all-rounder' - as it is debatable whether Matthews was a bowling all-rounder or batting all-rounder, which suggests he is in that category 'genuine all-rounder' (see the 'all-rounder' wiki) - I was surprised to see him listed as a batting all-rounder but resisted changing his label to 'bowling all-rounder' ".

However I do remember him as a bowling all-rounder, who would often surprise with a big innings batting. The figures for his test career with a batting average of 41 with four centuries and his high test bowling average of 48 do hint that he is in the batting all-rounder camp - his high test bowling average was the reason his test career was not that long. In Sheffield Shied cricket (first class cricket excluding tests) where he played most of his cricket his batting average was 38 and bowling average 30, and he had 20 5W/I & 4 10W/M - these figures more like a bowling all-rounder.

Of course the third option is that he was the third category "genuine all-rounder", with his fielding prowess adding to his handiness to a cricket team. So given the Wiki previously had him as a 'batting all-rounder', I am happy to have it say now just 'all-rounder' as perhaps this is the best description and is a compromise between those who differ.
