San Jose News - Feb 26, 1940 "Hamburger Mary" article. Candleabracadabra (talk) 17:04, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No direct connection, but the "Hamburger Mary's" that existed in New York City decades prior to the one that started in San Francisco in 1972 was frequented by William Burroughs, and Hamburger Mary is a character in Nova Express. One of the founders of the San Francisco restaurant that was a predecessor of the current franchise vaguely remembered a "Hamburger Mary" from Burroughs and it became one of several sources of inspiration for the name of that restaurant.
There really needs to be a much better history of Hamburger Mary's in this article, starting with the fact that the original San Francisco restaurant and the later franchise had long been under different ownership, and were in many ways very different venues. Removed list of specific locations

[edit]

I removed the paragraph on specific locations of franchises, as the paragraph was poorly written, extraneous, and outdated. Firstly, I don't think a list of every single franchise is needed for this article. Second, if you look at the history of HM franchises, one of the things one is struck by is just how much turnover there is - there literally are more closed locations than currently operating ones. Should these all be included? I've reduced this to a succinct and accurate statement and would appreciate this paragraph not being removed without reason. I've also kept paragraphs on openings and closures of the San Francisco and Jacksonville franchises, as these were newsworthy for various reasons.

IF other editors insist this information is absolutely needed in this article, I strongly suggest adding it as a list at the end of the article, since it is going to be incoherent in paragraph form. Peter G Werner (talk) 07:08, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I forgot to add: Please have a look at: Wikipedia:Independent_sources#Indiscriminate_sources. I believe the paragraph that I reverted is a textbook example of WP:INDISCRIMINATE. Peter G Werner (talk) 07:49, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
