"Sarah Jane Sutcliffe Edwards Makin"
[edit]This is surely a very American practice, to add all of a woman's surnames together into a string as if they were all part of her final name? It certainly wasn't done in Australia during the period concerned, and to me it seriously detracts from the article. Moonraker2 (talk) 03:20, 26 December 2010 (UTC)
- I think it is more a convention of completeness than anything else. Another approach is to boldface the various incremental names separately as in Elisabeth Murdoch. KimChee (talk) 16:43, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you, that approach is much better, as the convention is out of its time and place. I see the change has been made already. Moonraker2 (talk) 22:17, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

'Hat-pin Murderers' in infobox
[edit]The description for the parameter 'Other names' is "Other notable names for the person, if different from name and birth_name". The name "Hat-Pin Murderers", as applied to John And Sarah Makin, comes from the headline of an article describing their crimes published in Sydney's Truth newspaper in 1953 (The Hat-Pin Murderers, Truth, 29 March 1953, page 14). A search of Trove reveals that during the extensive nationwide newspaper coverage exposing their crimes during the early 1890s, up until Sarah's death in 1918, at no time were the couple described as the 'Hat-pin Murderers'. I do not agree that 'Hat-pin Murderers' constitutes a "notable" collective name for John And Sarah Makin, it is simply the headline of an article about them in a newspaper published in 1953. For this reason I have deleted the reference in the infobox. Ikeshut2 (talk) 12:30, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
- That's fair enough. I thought couple were described as the 'Hat-pin Murderers' more widely during that time but It's just the headline from that one article. Stellar master elite (talk) 15:31, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
