Curiculum Vitae is attached to cited affidavit
[edit]I don't know how to cite directly to pages of the PDF (http://norml.org/pdf_files/brief_bank/Grinspoon_suppl_affidavit.pdf). Birth and marital info is from Dr. Grinspoon's CV which he attached to an affidavit. -- Moss&Fern (talk) 07:02, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Alfred R. Lindesmith Award
[edit]The information about the two groups and their merger may appear a bit off the subject. It's there with the citation I used partly because the citation states when each group was formed which allowed me to determine which organization gave the award in 1990 as the Lindesmith Center wasn't formed until 1994 and partly to inform readers about the history and nature of the award. Academic background and non-drug related publications need fleshing out. APA fellow question.
[edit]Academic background and non-drug related publications need fleshing out seems a sufficient description of those matters.
The question about fellow of APA is whether tense is correct. I seem to recall he left the APA, severed his connection with an APA journal (perhaps one he founded)or something of the sort because of ethical objections to APA acceptance of pharmaceutical industry funding of APA conventions. Can anyone state whether this is correct or not? With citation if correct, of course. Moss&Fern (talk) 11:02, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
Dr Grinspoon's advocacy for cocaine is noteworthy, yet absent
[edit]In the 1976 book, "Cocaine : a drug and its social evolution" by Lester Grinspoon & James B. Bakalar, Dr Grinspoon studied the drug and attributed many positive reasons to use it; moreover, he appeared on television talk shows to promote his book and expressed the drug's benefits. Of course, psychopharmacology has advanced and cocaine's risks are better understood today. That said, Lester Grinspoon's research on cocaine, his book, and promotional appearances deserve mention. The article is scrubbed 'clean' and slanted without this history. Theaternearyou (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 21:59, 28 July 2010 (UTC).
Redirect
[edit]"Dr. Lester Grinspoon" should certainly redirect here. Pixel Eater (talk) 22:10, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
Trivia
[edit]Moved to talk because trivia section and unreferenced RJFJR (talk) 15:04, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
- The popular Australian rock band, Grinspoon, took their name from his surname.
- The Marijuana strain "Dr. Grinspoon" is named after Lester Grinspoon.
Citation for his children
[edit]The article mentions the names of his grand-children and the order in which they were born, but doesn't give a citation. I've found a citation that confirms that at least two of these grand-children exist, no ages are provided though. The source can be found here. Zell Faze (talk) 16:03, 31 December 2013 (UTC)
Place in history of MDMA
[edit]Dr. Grinspoon also had a personal experience with MDMA and advocated for MDMA to be placed in a less restrictive schedule by the DEA in the 1980s so that research into its psychotherapeutic properties could continue.

Re: Cannabis activism
[edit]I keep seeing him referred to as a "cannabis activist", but all he did was write about cannabis in a way that reached different conclusions from his peers. That doesn't make him an activist. To summarize his conclusions, "Cannabis isn't is a harmful as we thought and we shouldn't lock people up for it." That doesn't make him an "activist", it makes him a dissenter. When he originally published his findings in a popular book back in 1971, his findings were also supported by the Shafer Commission which recommended decriminalization. The 91st United States Congress and Nixon didn't care, and they signed the Controlled Substances Act into law. In 2024, there is a consensus that both Congress and Nixon were wrong. These facts do not make me, Grinspoon, or anyone else an "activist" for merely stating them. They are facts. Viriditas (talk) 20:10, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
