Records etc... And 2017

[edit]

It seems that random statistical crud is being dumped in the three related articles - here, the 2016 season article and the 2016 final article. I'd suggest:

  • a summary of stuff goes here - probably prose and picking up highlights
  • season articles are the place for records of the season etc... This would include most runs, most wickets, "best" fielder etc...
  • the final article (if we really need it) has the player of the match etc...

It might be reasonable to end up with a table here for player of the tournament perhaps. Once there's more than one of them - until that point there's no need to be mucking around with tables.

And with regards to 2017 - I can find no certainty that it will exist as yet. I imagine that will come later in the year - maybe, if this year is anything to go by, in September sort of time? Unless there is concrete planning in place already (which I read as not from what I can see). Thoughts? Blue Square Thing (talk) 20:23, 23 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Map

[edit]

Please don't restore the map of teams until they actually play in Pakistan. It's utterly misleading and actually pure fiction to pretend that in any way the teams are "spread across the nation". They play in the UAE and are named for some places in Pakistan. That's it for now. Blue Square Thing (talk) 15:35, 23 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Per User talk:ProdigyUpdates, I'll bring this here to seek consensus. No one's responded to my comments above, but is there any evidence to suggest that there is any kind of fan base concentrated in the cities? I would contend that there is nothing other than naming going on just now - there seems to me to be little evidence of this. For example, the Lahore Times - apparently the most read English language online newspaper in Lahore and local to that city - has no mention of the PSL team that I can find. The Statesman, which apparently is published in Peshawar, has, unless I'm mistaken, relatively significant coverage of the Lahore-Islamabad final group game in it's 19 February edition but, if anything, has no more coverage of the Quetta-Peshawar qualifier match in it's 21 February edition - and absolutely no preview at all of the match that I can find. Similarly, the 22 February edition has more coverage on the Islamabad-Karachi game than the 23 February edition does on the Peshawar loss in the 2nd qualifier. I'm restricting myself to sources that the wiki page on Pakistani newspapers say are a) in English and b) published in just one city. I might be missing shed loads of stuff - which is fine. But my totally vague poor scientific sample simply doesn't support a hypothesis that there's any local support base - if anything the Statesman, for example, seems to have way more coverage of Manchester United - do they have a local support base in Peshawar?
I'd appreciate an attempt to build a consensus properly on this. I'm a long way away and don't read anything useful other than English. Is there any evidence to suggest strong local support for franchises? Blue Square Thing (talk) 17:03, 5 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Re:It is simple common sense to recognize that a team with the name of a certain city will have the largest percentage of that city's support. The statistic you have on The Lahore Times being the most read English language online newspaper in Lahore comes from a wikipedia page with no sourcing whatsoever, much like your other citations. The fact that each teams' logo ceremony took place in their respective city displays that they expect the largest fan following from their city. Here are the sources for this.

I encourage you to read the last source I have cited which shows how the Peshawar Zalmi team took school children from their city to Dubai for the matches. I think that it is a strong indication of the ties between the team and its city. Claiming that the team names are nominal would be insensitive to the efforts made by the franchises to connect with their cities. I appreciate your concern but please do not revert the edit again. ProdigyUpdates (talk) 20:02, 5 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'll admit that I'm utterly unconvinced by your arguments here - in particular, to claim that something is "simple common sense" when we ought to be able to show it through reliable, third party citation (and that really is the requirement) is very poor reasoning. I also don't see at all any validity in the argument that because a team's logo was unveiled in a city shows that there is any popularity there - and, I'm sorry, but I'm spectacularly unimpressed by the sources as they stand - does the last one even show that kids were taken to Dubai? And is that actually showing a representation of a city?
I'd love to see more opinion on this. It may well be that Urdu sources show everything that I need them to - I just don't see it for now. I'll initially change the caption and think about this some more - but I'll say again that I really don't see the map as anything other than an absolute joke at present. Blue Square Thing (talk) 20:40, 5 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Here is a clearer source showcasing the relation between the school kids and the franchise with a documentary included.

Throughout this debate, I struggle to understand why you are the only user that has an issue with the map. In this case, I suggest we let the majority decide the final outcome. ProdigyUpdates (talk) 21:54, 5 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That's a more convincing source. Are there any others? One source is weaker than I'd like it to be.
In terms of consensus, you have to, perhaps, delve into the page history a little, as well as that of connected pages. Barely any editors involved in PSL articles make any attempt to engage on talk pages. That's why I appear to be the only user having a problem with it - no one else engages (I'm not convinced, by the way, that others haven't also removed it, but I may be wrong on that). There have been repeated attempts to, for example, state as a fact that the league will play in Pakistan in 2017 or that teams will play in specific cities in the future. These, as of now, are pure fantasy. In that context the map, with it's caption telling us that teams play in these cities, and attempts to claim that teams play across Pakistan appear simply an extension of the fantasy editing being carried out by these editors.
I think you're closer to convincing me by the way. But I'm still wary of the use of the map given the context under which it was inserted. Blue Square Thing (talk) 06:10, 6 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Success of first season, history and structure of article

[edit]

Hi. So, I'm not entirely sure about the best way to structure the article now. It seems as if moves are underfoot to go for a 2017 season and the 2016 one seems to have been more successful, financially at least, than might have been expected - and perhaps had a political impact. I've toned down some language for now, but it does seem reasonable to talk about the success. At the same time, it seems logical to create a subsection for 2016 in the history perhaps? But then don't winners belong in the history - for now at least? I'm not entirely convinced that the IPL, BPL or BBL articles really deal with history all that successfully either for what it's worth. Thoughts? Template in #Teams section

[edit]

Hi! A "too-big" code has been used in #Teams section of the page. But there is already a template present, {{Pakistan Super League Map}}, why this is not used here? M. Billoo 14:06, 18 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Currency (PKR vs USD)

[edit]

This is the Pakistan Super League, so emphasis should be made on the price/value of teams in PKR, not USD. Using {{PKRconvert|XX|m}} would be better, since it automatically converts PKR to USD and publishes both. --PAKHIGHWAY (talk) 00:22, 25 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@PAKHIGHWAY: I totally agree with you. Now because I have no clue how it works, would it be possible for you to do it since I feel you might be the most adept and capable person to do it at the moment? Thank you. Anzan7 (talk) 05:23, 16 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Anzan7: This already has been undid, due to PKR was unsourced. Officially given amount is in US$. Also, PKR-US$ varies, I don't remember what it was back in 2015 and how much change has occured till now. In an average, we say US$1=Rs. 100, but this amount cannot be inserted. See this. Thanks! M. Billoo 05:32, 16 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

2018 squads

[edit]

Hi The Floka and Anzan7! I saw you both were contributing on current squads of teams. I have some thoughts to share, and hope for your comments too.

There is a page 2018 Pakistan Super League squads, and its like updated last from pre-draft picks. I was thinking that the tables on the teams' main page can be shifted to the squads' page, that can make a table in one place with no repetition.

Like for example, Peshawar Zalmi#Current squad table can be shifted to 2018 Pakistan Super League squads#Peshawar Zalmi, and after shifting we can link on main team page as {{Main|2018 Pakistan Super League squads#Peshawar Zalmi}}. Similarly, template:main can also be added in Peshawar Zalmi in 2018 page.

See what's on Multan Sultans and Multan Sultans in 2018, we can make all team's pages same. Instead of having same table twice or thrice (like was in previous years), adding only once is better. Want to know your thoughts on it too, Thanks! M. Billoo 05:02, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

yes I agree with that. So you wanted either of us to copy and paste the squads straight from their respective team pages and into the 2018 team squads page. I was also thinking that we should make a table template for the squads like they’ve done for the IPL squads on their pages because it makes it look a little more tidier and neat. Anzan7 (talk) 06:44, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ok and what about players' salary. Should we write category like Platinum, Diamond etc instead of salary that they would earn. This year a player picked in Platinum category would be earning between US$140,000–230,000 and exact salaray of a player is not mentioned by franchises. The Floka (talk) 07:43, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Anzan7: The idea of having templates is good, but I didn't understand the example of IPL. Can you please elaborate?
@The Floka: You are right! Indiviadual salaries of players are un-official, but salary limit for each category has been given. So, yes inserting category name would be better.
One more thing I want to say. What are the pages; like List of Karachi Kings cricketers; for, why are they? I mean if there are respective categories like Category:Karachi Kings cricketers, then is there need of a separate page too? And please check out 2018 Pakistan Super League players draft page, I think I may have made it too long and complicated. Thanks! M. Billoo 00:25, 16 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Anzan7: Hi! Thanks for making the templates for Rosters. But what happens if there will be 2019 PSL? Should we make new templates then or have to remove old pages? Thanks! M. Billoo 04:34, 16 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Anzan7: There are no pages for IPL squads yearwise on wikipedia, the reason is that they have only 1 template for each Rosters. It would also happen here on PSL too, someone might delete the page 2018 Pakistan Super League squads in future. Better to move the templates to Template:2018 Peshawar Zalmi squad and similar, or just remain it as {{Main|2018 Pakistan Super League squads#Peshawar Zalmi}} and delete templates. M. Billoo 04:46, 16 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@M.Billoo2000: yes I didn't quite think it through as I was doing it. However, I've just removed the templates altogether, although I haven't deleted them off wikipedia completely so they still exist; and I've just copied and pasted the squads from their respective team pages into the 2018 PSL squads page as you can see.Anzan7 (talk) 05:13, 16 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@M.Billoo2000: I think making separate templates for each squad with respect to each year like Template:2018 Peshawar Zalmi squad, is just plain confusing and unnecessary, so I've opted to just keep it how it was before, i.e. with no template. What do you think? Anzan7 (talk) 05:16, 16 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Anzan7: Hi! I think the roster template can be used on main team page. Link {{Peshawar Zalmi Roster}} to Peshawar Zalmi page only, and similarly other five teams.
@The Floka: Also, as you said, add player categories or atlease category colors (see 2018 Pakistan Super League players draft#Key), if actual salary is unsourced. Thanks! M. Billoo 02:44, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Anzan7: Thanks for updating pages. One more thing, there are already flagicons given in table. Some are Pakistani flags, and others are ofcourse international. Just asking, is it necessary to write "overseas" after player's name? Thanks! M. Billoo 03:42, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@M.Billoo2000: Hey, yeah I would think its necessary because their classification in the league is that of overseas, so I would assume its pertinent to mention that. Anzan7 (talk) 04:21, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Mar4d and The Floka: Hi! Just wanted a suggestion. Can '2018 squad' and '2018 draft' pages be merged? Both have similar information; same tables and same names. Thanks! M. Billoo 14:06, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It depends. Is there anything on the squad articles that is not currently covered in the draft articles? Also, if a merge is carried out, the same would need to be done for the 2016 and 2017 pages. Mar4d (talk) 14:21, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Mar4d: Thanks for your response. Squad tables have have player names, with maybe unsourced salary (as discussed above). Draft tables have player names wrt their categories, players who left and who are new signings.
I think for merger, if we just give these other details in form of paragraphs under "Background" section, then use only team roster tables in the page with their categories instead of each one's salary (unless if sourced). Is this necessary here to explain that which which players have been retained, or picked in the draft or chosen after it? Maybe I am unable to explain my point in English. Well, I can give a sample for it in the sandbox. Then I will post a message. Thanks! M. Billoo 17:51, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Mar4d and The Floka: Please see User:M.Billoo2000/sandbox/2018 PSL player details, Thanks! M. Billoo 20:40, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@M.Billoo2000: Hey, Yes I think it is important to explain that which player have been retained, released or picked and I think merge is not possible at the moment because as @Mar4d: said above if we merge 2018 squad with 2018 draft then same would have to be done with 2016 and 2017 pages. The Floka (talk) 07:12, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Should we list Multan Sultans as a defunct team or rather a team that changed identity and possibly moved to another city. This has happened a few times in sports and that is how is is usually handled. Please comment M.Billoo2000 and Mar4d. If this conversation is taking place elsewhere, please tag me. Thanks. LA Rams and St. Louis Rams. Thanks. So said The Great Wiki Lord. (talk) 20:11, 13 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@TheGreatWikiLord: I think defunct, for now. The cricket board hasn't announced if the replacing sixth team would be a new one, or simply if this team itself would be rebranded/relaunched under a different or the same name. What we do know so far is that there will be new owners, so that effectively renders the previous Multan franchise defunct. Mar4d (talk) 10:25, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
May I read too much into the fact PCB will assume responsibility for the player and coach contracts, they have also said that the tournament will continue as a 6 team tournament. But I guess we can leave things as it, and readdress the matter once more information is revealed. So said The Great Wiki Lord. (talk) 14:37, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

IU: 23 February 2019

[edit]

@A Simple Human and The Floka: Hi! Please do not make disruption on the page, and keep in mind the WP:3RR. You both are good active users. Decide on what to write for the Islamabad United's captain. See last #IUvKK teams, and previous #IUvPZ man of the match. Thanks! M. Billoo 03:09, 24 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Since we don't for how long Mohammad Sami has been injured, I think interim should be written beside the current captain's name. I have no idea why The Floka is reverting my edits without explanations. Human (talk) 03:53, 24 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@A Simple Human and M.Billoo2000: Hi! Thanks to both of you for your contributions! Hope you both will be fine. Human, I think adding it so quickly without any source would be incorrect. What if Mohammad Sami plays in the next game, it would mean that we would have to revert it back. Let's just take the example of last year's psl. Misbah-ul-Haq, who was the regular captain of the team was out injured in first two matches and Rumman Raees captained the side in his absence, but Misbah-ul-Haq was still being mentioned as the regular captain in the squad column. Thanks! The Floka (talk) 06:16, 24 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

That is why the 'interim' is included. Mohammad Sami can still be listed as regular captain in the squads. As far as the source goes, the scorecards act as those. There is no problem in reverting back either. If you are not satisfied by this way of editing then you can take example from Big Bash League where the same procedure was followed. Human (talk) 06:20, 24 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, the staistics table is incorrect. It shows Islamabad United have 0 Tie-Win which is incorrect it won oneTier-Win against Lahore in 2018.

In the rest of the table you will see that Lahore have one Tie-Win and one Tie-Loss whereas Karachihaveone Tie-Loss. So who did Lahore loose against? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Drsohailmunir (talkcontribs) 03:01, 8 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

F1amingSku11, where do you see anyone suggesting it should be deleted? Note that this discussion took place nearly a decade ago; rest assured it does not pose any threat to the article's existence today.
That said, may I kindly suggest that you take the time to familiarise yourself with our notability policies, in particular WP:GNG and WP:NEVENTS? While the PSL obviously passes both with flying colours, the points you make here are the kind of arguments that usually don't prove particularly useful due to not actually being grounded in policy, and would not stand up to a deletion discussion. M Imtiaz (talk · contribs) 18:20, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see now that you may have been thrown off by the deletion of the PSL portal. Portals are separate from articles, and serve as a central location for listing articles related to the topic; see Portal:Bangladesh for a random example. The fact that the portal for the PSL was deleted does not mean that the article will face the same outcome, merely that consensus is that a separate portal for it is not warranted (and trust me, given that there was a protracted war on here between broadly pro- and anti-portal advocates, it might be best not to challenge that consensus).
