Tense

[edit]

Forgive me if I am being stupid but I cannot discern any logic in the question of which sentences are in the present tense and which are in the past. Since all these incidents have already happened, can't they just all be in the past tense? To my mind there's something odd, and perhaps slightly pseudo-journalese, about the present-tense ones. I'd rather see it all in the past (and am tempted to change them, if there are no serious objections) but at the very least the article should, surely, be internally consistent. Or is there a guideline or something?? DisillusionedBitterAndKnackered (talk) 13:49, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Any objections, or even comments please? DisillusionedBitterAndKnackered (talk) 16:00, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Howdy there - I am one of the primary contributors to this article, having sourced the lion's share of the incidents, and also went to the effort to break it into four sections by era. For this article, I have primarily written of the incidents/accidents in the present tense, describing the event as it unfolds. Most other contributors have followed this lead. Having pretty much cut it out of whole cloth, it has been my stylistic judgement that it reads more easily that way, given that EVERY incident is past tense historically and therefore that is a given. There is no official policy regarding this as far as I know, and you are the only contributor to query the tense style. In the cases where it reads in the past-tense, I would suggest that it will be easier to make them conform to the established style for this article rather than revert all the others to passive voice. Best regards! Mark Sublette (talk) 23:37, 6 June 2009 (UTC)Mark SubletteMark Sublette (talk) 23:37, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough and thanks very much for the reply. Whilst I personally dislike the present tense I can see your argument for it, and I do agree that consistency is far more important here than personal preference. I'd be delighted to give you a hand converting some past-tense ones to present in the interest of consistency. Cheers, DisillusionedBitterAndKnackered (talk) 23:49, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Incidentally, although I have used the Railway Accidents era blocks as a stylistic guideline for the era breaks, given the higher intensity of aviation accidents, I may have to break the article(s) into more year-block sections, which is something I do not fancy, given the necessity of also realigning the references, as well... I appreciate your kind understanding of my decision of using the present-tense voice in describing the events. I kind of dreaded getting in a mud-fight about my editorial decision... Any help on this article is greatly appreciated! Mark Sublette (talk) 01:00, 7 June 2009 (UTC)Mark SubletteMark Sublette (talk) 01:00, 7 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And, as a nod to the higher quality of historical coverage of such accidents displayed by the many fine British aviation publications over American sources, I have also chosen to use Brit speak in describing the details, such as "undercarriage" over "landing gear", and including "port inner" to define the number two engine, for instance. It seems only fair as y'all invented the language! Mark Sublette (talk) 01:05, 7 June 2009 (UTC)Mark SubletteMark Sublette (talk) 01:05, 7 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much for all that, which I found very interesting. As you probably guessed this is an area about which I don't know very much and I just got interested in the tense thing as a language issue, having stumbled over this article quite by accident. I really wouldn't have been up for a fight about it, regardless! Cheers DisillusionedBitterAndKnackered (talk) 22:44, 7 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Having just discovered this page some four years after the conversation about tense, I have to say that it seems really odd to use the present tense, and makes the page read more like a cheap TV documentary than an encyclopaedia. Much of Wikipedia is about events which took place in the past, and as such is written in the appropriate tense. I appreciate the effort which went into compiling this list, but why are the rules different here? Eric Blatant (talk) 12:55, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

When and where does this happen?

A popular youtube video shows puma crash during some military training routine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3F2k-GWKW-w —Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.58.135.33 (talk) 19:12, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I understand the Puma accident was in 1999 at Les Mereaux, France. MilborneOne (talk) 19:47, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

suppose the engine of plane or helicopter has stooped working at a higher altitude ,If we have a technology to prevent the plane or helicopter from crash by means of heavy parachute or a hot gas balloon to provide safety for occupants(passengers). what would happen, if we directly provide a parachute or a hot balloon to a plane and helicopter? sir, I need suggestion from your side this type of safe guard why not in use , whether it is possible or not , or not yet experimented . if any test of this technology has happened, please send me that data. {email removed) or contact me on my contact no. {phone number removed) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 183.83.235.105 (talk) 08:22, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not the best place to ask a general question but have a look at Ballistic Recovery Systems. Also note I have removed your email and phone number, we normally only reply on talk pages and your address/numbers may be used by others unconnected with wikipedia. Time to split?

[edit]

I propose that this list is split in two, with the current title moving to List of accidents and incidents involving military aircraft (2000–2009) and a new list created for post 2009 accidents at List of accidents and incidents involving military aircraft (2010–present). Space Shuttle was NOT a Military Aircraft?

[edit]

I don'd think the Space Shuttle Columbia was a Military Aircraft. It was operated by NASA which is a government agency that is responsible for the civilian space program. It should be listed in only space-related accident lists. Rocketmaniac2 (talk) 04:54, 25 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm looking any comments before I remove the Shuttle accident for this Military list (it's already on the space accident list). Rocketmaniac2 (talk) 20:35, 31 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Since it's been a full month since I first posted this Question here (with no replies or comments), I'v re-posted on Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions#Military_Accident_list_Article_Question. There I did get some replies.
To make this article much better, I welcome other editors to post their ideas, comments etc. either here on the article's talk page or on the "Teahouse/Questions"...... Thanks in advance for you help. Rocketmaniac2 (talk) 03:15, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Clearly not a military aircraft so should not be included. MilborneOne (talk) 13:17, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
