[edit]- Metal Gear (series), video games: in article, "MGS" is the standard used, not "MG" --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 04:02, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
- Mobile and Gulf Railroad (AAR reporting mark): this redirects to Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad, which contains no mention of this defunct railroad nor it's AAR mark; therefore, the reference is unverifiable at present --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 04:02, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

MG → MG (disambiguation) – to free up MG for the primary subject (MG the car manufacturer) that is currently located at MG Cars, and likely to be merged with MG Motors. – Relisted. Jenks24 (talk) 11:01, 13 August 2014 (UTC) Warren (talk) 14:54, 6 August 2014 (UTC)
- This is a contested technical request (permalink). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 20:25, 6 August 2014 (UTC)
- Oppose both on grounds of WP:PRIMARYTOPIC and WP:ACRONYMTITLE. No justification has been made yet on why the motor company should be the primary topic. Furthermore, the abbreviation "MG" does not appear to be primarily associated with that particular subject, judging by the long list of entries currently listed on the MG page. The acronym is currently used from anything from units of measurement, to a Unix-based text editor, to the country code of Madagascar, to the abbreviation of the chemical element magnesium, and so forth. Per WP:ACRONYMTITLE, "Many acronyms are used for several things; naming a page with the full name helps to avoid clashes". There will definitely be a clash if MG Cars is moved to just "MG", IMO. Also, Magnesium[1] and Madagascar[2] get more traffic than MG Motor[3] or MG Cars[4] Thus the company should retain some sort of disambiguation title. Zzyzx11 (talk) 04:50, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
- Strong oppose I would say milligram or magnesium is the primary topic, as many people mispell it with capitals. And if it had to be an object, it'd be the MG 42 which is also shortened to just "MG" -- 65.94.169.222 (talk) 05:52, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
- Support. The "MG" marque used by MG Cars and MG Motor is indeed the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC of "MG" due to its long-term significance and the current primary use of the abbreviation pronounced "M.G." The "MG" marque has not been an acronym since at least 1935, when MG was absorbed into the holding company Morris Motors Limited. Milligram and the Malagasy language are abbreviated "mg". Magnesium is abbreviated "Mg". The Megagauss, being a non-SI unit, is obsolete and rarely used. None of the four is pronounced "M.G." Routinely providing disambiguation pages geographic abbreviations (e.g. Madagascar, Minas Gerais, and Mongolia) or abbreviations in military terminology (e.g. Major general, Machine gun) would be madness. G. C. Hood (talk) 20:18, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
- Routinely providing disambiguation pages for any notable abbreviation (as defined by WP:DABABBREV) is the common Wikipedia practice, as well as providing redirects like Abc and Afl to account for users who might not use all capital or lowercase letters, and redirects like A.B.C. and A.F.L. for those who may enter periods/full stops between the letters. The formatting of the titles of such acronym disambiguation pages, like ABC, is specified on WP:DABNAME: "The simplest form of the term is preferred to those containing punctuation, diacritics and articles". The current MG disambiguation page and the Mg and M.G. redirects are no different. Zzyzx11 (talk) 18:01, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
- Support, with additional comment: The primary subject is easily tested by looking searching via Google and Bing. A clear tophat would redirect people using acronyms to the proposed disambiguation page. I've seen nothing to suggest MG would automatically refer to MG 42! Warren (talk) 22:16, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

- Per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, doing a search engine test is one method that can be used to determine a primary topic based on most usage. The traffic stats I cited above may be another. Since there is a conflict between those results, that does not prove to me there is overwhelming evidence that the motor company is a primary topic based on usage, especially when the Magnesium page generates more traffic. As for long term significance, I really doubt the motor company has that more significance than a vital, academic topic like Magnesium. Zzyzx11 (talk) 18:01, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

- Comment: no reason why mg and Mg are not redirected to MG (disambiguation) as they currently are redirected to MG. Warren (talk) 22:20, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
- Agreed. G. C. Hood (talk) 23:54, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
- Oppose barring sources of the carmaker's primacy. Red Slash 20:11, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
- Support. Per Warren Whyte above. MG, the marque of British sports car fame, is the clear primary topic. TwoWayStreet (talk) 06:32, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
- Oppose for as long as Mg is part of the same disambiguation, the claim of primary topic is invalid on the basis of long-term significance - a fairly specific engineering/sports topic such as a car brand can't take precedence over the universally common chemical element sign or the very common SI unit of weight. If that incoming redirect is split off, then the matter becomes a bit more moot, because Madagascar's ISO country code doesn't strike me as very commonly known, yet, I'd still lean in favor of full disambiguation absent some clear measurement in favor of the car (as opposed to assertions). --Joy [shallot] (talk) 11:59, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
- If you were to type Mg, it would still direct to the proposed new disambiguation page, just as it does now. If you are after MG, which is a very well known car company intentionally, then this would go straight to the proposed new page (with a top hat for the MG disambiguation). The proposal is to maintain the status quo for mg and Mg (as these are already redirects), and only MG changes. Warren (talk) 15:47, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
- You should have split the disambiguation pages first, and then proposed the contentious change... in any event, you can do it now. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 21:09, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

- Oppose There is no demonstration here that the car company is primary topic. View stats are about eight times higher for Magnesium than for MG Motor and over twice that of MG Cars. There are a rather strong case for Magnesium to be topic lead. Further, which iteration of the car company would be the proposed topic lead? The new company or the old. The proposal isn't strong enough to act on.--Labattblueboy (talk) 06:04, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
- Oppose. Even taking milligrams and magnesium out of the equation, there are still many significant topics that use a capitalized "MG", such as the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais and Match Game. bd2412 T 14:14, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
