I think I should finish this tomorrow. JAGUAR 19:25, 28 December 2017 (UTC)
- I feel like the lead should be expanded slightly to summarise the whole article per WP:LEADLENGTH. Some more content could be added here, for example viewing statistics and after-match reactions? I'm also surprised that the exact date of December 9, 2017 isn't mentioned in the lead
- "and was contested by 22 teams in two conferences" - what is a conference referring to here? Try to link this term for unfamiliar readers
- "and Sebastian Giovinco suspended for yellow card accumulation" - why not just say that he got suspended for receiving two yellow cards?
- "Toronto traveled to play Columbus Crew SC, earning a 0–0 draw on the road and a 1–0 win at home" - sounds a tad informal, how about just away?
- I think we can safely get rid of the Ticketing subsection and just merge with the Venue section
- Two paragraphs of the Post-match section begin with "Toronto FC". Also I think it might be better to merge these paragraphs into two if possible, for readability and presentation
- Ref 5 is dead
This article is very well written and solid overall—I couldn't find any glaring issues here. The sources all check out fine too. Once the minor issues above are clarified then this should be good to go. JAGUAR 14:16, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
- @Jaguar: Thanks for the review! I've fixed all your comments. Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 14:58, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you! Looks good. Let's get this promoted. JAGUAR 19:34, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
Placename in infobox
[edit]Whatever yas do, just don't delete Canada from the placename. It's frustrating enough that the British seemingly refuse to use United Kingdom. GoodDay (talk) 16:52, 3 January 2018 (UTC)
FWIW, I added USA to the other MLS Cup Year articles, per consistency. GoodDay (talk) 17:02, 3 January 2018 (UTC)
- @GoodDay: You might want to read WP:NOTUSA. Walter Görlitz (talk) 16:02, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
- Not a problem. Somebody has already made the USA to US corrections. GoodDay (talk) 16:23, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
It's extremely silly to see "Toronto, Canada" on an article about a sporting event hosted by Canada. Yes the league may be primarily American, but this particular edition of the MLS Cup was hosted in Canada and contested by a Canadian team. WP:CANPLACE also states "If American states are present, for example, use Canadian provinces and territories as well.", and as other editions of the MLS Cup also include the state of the host city, this should apply uniformly here. SounderBruce 06:09, 1 November 2019 (UTC)
- Not really. It's in many articles where the subject is about something outside Canada. There are no American states present though. The match was played in Canada. Walter Görlitz (talk) 06:15, 1 November 2019 (UTC)
- It's highly unusual to have "Toronto, Canada" in American English (which should be used here alongside Canadian English per WP:ENGVAR). The following American websites use "Toronto, Ontario" or "Toronto, Ontario, Canada": MLSsoccer.com, SoundersFC.com, The Oregonian, Yahoo Sports/Reuters, Orlando Sentinel. SounderBruce 06:35, 1 November 2019 (UTC)
- It's actually quite common to have it. 59 times on MLSSoccer.com alone. Usage depends on the subject. I was just editing a Costa Rican international footballer's article and the US states are piped out, so they list "Orlando, United States" and "Carson, United States", etc. The league itself is American. The club articles for the three Canadian-based teams, and their seasons, are written in Canadian English, but this is a league article. Walter Görlitz (talk) 06:47, 1 November 2019 (UTC)
- Thrice on SoundersFC.com 380 times on oregonlive.com 3,920 times on sports.yahoo.com and 369 times on orlandosentinel.com. Walter Görlitz (talk) 06:51, 1 November 2019 (UTC)
- Have to filter out datelines (e.g. "TORONTO – Canada [article text]") and international bureaus like AFP (particularly in Yahoo Sports). For one, MLS uses Toronto, Ontario more often than "Toronto, Canada". SounderBruce 06:55, 1 November 2019 (UTC)
- MLS uses both, but this article does not. Walter Görlitz (talk) 06:59, 1 November 2019 (UTC)
