The last line in the Richard Worley Early Career section seems to have a typo and no citation ".He was the richest man on the high seas and was rought less.". I hesitate to edit since I am new to WikiPedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chas3972 (talkcontribs) 22:21, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Origin of Richard Worley

[edit]

Some internet pages have linked Richard Worley the pirate with the English quakers Daniel Wharley and Mary Penington, without citing any evidence. However, wills of the Wharleys, Peningtons and friends (e.g. John Vennington (sic), Gentleman of Amersham Woodside 1710 & Thomas Ellwood, Gentleman of Amersham 1713) all agree that Daniel and Mary only had the following four sons:-

  • Daniel Wharley c.1690-1733
  • Isaac Wharley 1696-1719
  • Henry Wharley 1700-?
  • Edward Wharley 1702-1726

Both parish records and quaker meeting minutes support there having only been these four sons, and so it seems that someone has been spreading false information connecting Richard Worley to Daniel and Mary Wharley. Details of this link have now been removed from Richard Worley's wiki page.

Unless anyone can provide verifiable evidence linking them please do not add this info back. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CaptainArrr (talkcontribs) 12:18, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Captain,
As a descendant of Captain Worley, I can't prove anything about his Quaker origins. However, I do have personal family history and ancestry.com to prove that he was born to a Daniel and Mary Worley (in our documents, we don't get the 'h' or 'a', even going as far back as 1044) either in 1687 or 1688 in England. Famous related Quakers appear nowhere in our telling or family lore. However, names were repeated a lot back then; the Daniel and Mary who sired Richard may only share similar names to the Quaker couple.
I search back through the edits and find it was you who added the Quaker origins; why did you embrace them, then subsequently reject them? What was the original source for that, and how did you find the cited materials?
Thanks!

Requested move 17 October 2023

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: moved (non-admin closure). There is a clear majority in support and additionally they have shown that the pirate is not the primary topic by the usage metric; those in oppose have mentioned that the pirate may have better long-term significance but have not provided a strong argument for this claim. I will turn Richard Worley into a dab once the move is done. Jenks24 (talk) 09:51, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Richard WorleyRichard Worley (pirate) – No PTOPIC with Richard Worley (police officer). Clyde [trout needed] 03:17, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support only if it's to create a parent disambiguation page for Richard Worley. If it's to make Richard Worley (police officer) the primary topic, then no, Oppose, because that page is a month old and the pirate (this page) is historically the more notable. • It is. Note that I said No PTOPIC with Richard Worley (police officer), not Richard Worley (police officer) is the PTOPIC. Clyde [trout needed] 18:37, 19 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Weak oppose: The police officer only seems more popular as a result of WP:RECENTISM. I see no basis for saying he has greater long-term historical significance. — BarrelProof (talk) 14:53, 18 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
