Regarding the Usage of Gendered Pronouns

[edit]

The recent history of gendered language in Japanese is complex, especially in regard to LGBT individuals. (See: Gender differences in Japanese#In modern society and LGBT culture in Japan#Linguistic history, etc.) The gender presentation of the subject of this article is also complex. MOS:GID states English pronoun usage should "reflect the person's most recent expressed self-identification". Ryuchell ostensibly did not identify as male, as made evident by their August 2022 statement on the matter referenced in the article. They had also begun publicly presenting in a manner that may be regarded as female, and despite the lack of direct confirmation of having transitioned, this combined with their appearances with the transgender flag might be seen as a way of navigating Honne and tatemae. As such, I would like to form a consensus on whether the neutral usage of they should be replaced with she, with my opinion being that the latter is more appropriate. — VariousDeliciousCheeses (talk) 13:59, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The article currently uses "he", but the BBC News article on Ryuchell's death uses "they"- I would suggest changing the instances of "he" to "they". Chessrat (talk, contributions) 18:11, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
