Rename

[edit]

Since there was no discussion, I do not know what was wrong with the original name of this article, "Other Redskins sports teams", but I do not see "Non-NFL" as an improvement. The topic is "School and youth Redskins teams" so I propose moving the article again.FriendlyFred (talk) 18:05, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Query about inclusion

[edit]

Is there a reason that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wichita_North_High_School is not included on this list? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.16.211.185 (talk) 20:29, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This is an article about teams that have been mentioned in reliable sources concerning recent changes or controversies. The list of high schools is here.

Non-NFL Redskins sports teamsList of sports teams named Redskins – There has to be a less clunky name than this one. I'm open to other suggestions. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 19:18, 29 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose - This is not a list, but an article with significant content, although originally created to reduce the bloat in Washington Redskins name controversy. I created the article, calling it "Other Redskins sports teams" but it was immediately changed to the current title. I did not object since "Non-NFL" does define the scope of the article; every team except the one in Washington.--WriterArtistDC (talk) 20:04, 29 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sports teams named Redskins would elegantly remove WriterArtistDC's valid concerns, I hope. No such user (talk) 15:19, 5 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have no particular objection to "Sports teams named Redskins" except that it would require some rewriting of the current article (summarizing Washington Redskins name controversy), while I do not see the need based upon a single editor's opinion of "clunkiness" of the current title.--WriterArtistDC (talk) 19:21, 5 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I share that opinion. However, it is objectively hard to find a non-clunky title (and I don't like my suggestion too much either), because the article's scope is quite unusual: it describes controversies surrounding teams named "Redskins" other than Washington Redskins, by far the most notable one. The name for that set is a challenge; further, the focus of this article is controversy, not the mere fact that they are named "Redskins" (compare the boring list at Eagles (disambiguation)#Sports teams).
Per WP:SS, a brief WS summary would be beneficial even here for the background, as Washington Redskins name controversy is only mentioned in the lead, and #Role in the national controversy section could use some background explanation. No such user (talk) 12:32, 6 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The background is that I needed to apply wp:Summary style ruthlessly to get the main article on the NFL team down to size for a GA review two years ago, which it passed. There was plenty of content for spin-off articles, and I would like to limit this article to content when the larger controversy effects local teams, as it did last year with the California law, but the suggested titles change the scope in my opinion. I did not think it required much more than a link to the main article, but I have added contextual content to the lead section.--WriterArtistDC (talk) 13:44, 6 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
PS. I do think the local controversies are notable in their own right.--WriterArtistDC (talk) 14:23, 6 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I understand (and agree) completely. Just, I agree with Koavf that we need a better title for this article (OK, I won't lose my sleep if it stays this way either). "Controversies about sports teams named Redskins", perhaps? No such user (talk) 08:57, 7 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's probably better to let a neutral admin handle the close, but do go ahead and write the summary. It'll close before too long, unless there are other opposes.--Cúchullain t/c 15:19, 7 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Done: the content is restructured in accordance with a more general topic highlighted in the revised lead. I only wish there could be as much interest in discussing the content of such articles as there has been in the title of this one.--WriterArtistDC (talk) 15:54, 7 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I added a long quote from the press release because I do not know how to paraphrase this legalese in a NPOV manner.--WriterArtistDC (talk) 03:14, 27 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
