I'd assume it's in reference to the various uses of galena/lead sulphide in making infrared photodetectors. Based on the time period and the Soviet association, I'd guess the importance was probably related to building IR seekers for use in missiles. 156.57.202.117 (talk) 23:25, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
