Whistler Mountain vs Whistler Blackcomb

I thought I better comment here as there was no room in the edit comments to fully explain the Wikipedia issues in the intro; the link to Whistler Mountain was originally directed to Whistler Blackcomb, which is a corporate-resort article and there is a Whistler Mountain geographic article. I'm not sure of the land status of the facility being built, I'll re-read the article, but AFAIK it's a public spending project and not part of the corporate structure of Whistler Blackcomb, although occurring on that company's leased/owned lands (leased crown land, or owned?); the alternative might have been to say "on Whistler Mountain, which is one of two mountains forming the Whistler Blackcomb ski resort". The impression given by that link, and the absence of a direct naming of the municipality, is that it is the resort which is co-host to the Olympics and the owner of the facility; it would be easier if the geographic mountain, the resort company/mountain and the resort municipality all didn't share the same name but that's not the case. It's just important to keep all the ducks lined up when writing and editing such paragraphs; due credit where credit is due and care should be taken with what links to what

I did want to comment that it's good to see the technical detail and thorough citations for this article, which is delightfully NPOV and free of the "peacock terms" found in other Olympics articles; good work!Skookum1 (talk) 20:32, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

As far as geographic locations, I thought the venue was at the Blackcomb mountain and not at Whistler Mountain itself. If that is wrong, them i am in error. Chris (talk) 17:55, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Myself I don't know, I just edited the link, so I'll check; if you're not in error, then the article seriously is; it could be due to a misconception that Whistler Mountain inclucdes Blackcomb because they're one resort. I'll be back after I check; in the back of my mind now that you mention it there's something on Blackcomb; the downhill run of course is on Whistler.Skookum1 (talk) 20:31, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

The answer is Blackcomb Mountain, near the old daylodge at hte upper parking lot; teh google earth doesn't show the track so the images are old, but if the latlong provided in the article is right, it's on the Blackcomb side of Fitzsimmons Creek (the sunny side).Skookum1 (talk) 20:43, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Reqmap

Map needed ,but not a location-in-BC map; a diagram of the track in relation to Whistler Village and the slope/lifts of Whistler is what I'm thinking of; whether such a thing can be found that's GDFL friendly I don't know; perhaps the track designers or one of the organizations might care to make a diagram public-domain so such an image can be used to illustrate the article. Ditto the Nordic facility in Callaghan Valley.Skookum1 (talk) 20:34, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

Another request I would add would be a track diagram or pictures of the track. If anyone plans on being up there during bobsleigh, luge, or skeleton World Cup competitions in early 2009, I would sincerely apprecaite it. Chris (talk) 17:46, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

This page has a track diagram, but I can't tell from it which side of Fitzsimmons Creek it's on; my guess looks to be on the Blackcomb side of the creek, but that cat access trail may well be on the higher side in which case it's Whistler. By the picture on the main site page it almost looks like it spans Fitzsimmons Creek, but I doubt v ery much they did htat - it's avery voltile mountain crek with a severe flooding/debris hazard in the long run. I'd think they'd want it on the icy side of the valley, i.e. in the shae, which would mean Whistler rather than Blackcomb; but maybe there are reasons to want sun on the site, in which case the lowermost slopes of Blackcomb would seem to be where it is; and maybe it's not lowermost, but below Seventh Heaven somewhere...I'm curious if the googleearth map is relatively recent and may host the site; I'll be back after I look.Skookum1 (talk) 20:39, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Safety Concerns

Could anybody check on the references of the two-men-bobsleigh event? It says there only three people crashed. I distinctly remember the Canadian bob crashing in the second run, being seated at third place at the time. The source is obviously wrong. Also I believe there were several crashes in runs 3 and 4. Good article nomination

Just passing through the GAN page. Couple of comments:

• It's obvious there was a lots of work on this. Bravo. Hoewever, consider tightening some of the sections a bit more. Work on removing anything extraneous.
• An example would be the lengthy list of names in "First testing and homologation (2007–08)." The laborious list of names just isn't needed. You could split this out into a "List of..." page if you thought it was sufficiently important to merit a list of the names. They could be summarized here as in "there were 17 xxx, including (insert two notable/famous names here), and eight xxx including (insert one notable name here).
• You have a "Main article": Bobsleigh at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Yet, the summarized text in this article is lengthier than in the main article. This section could be further summarized by placing more text from this article in the main article. If it seems that some of the text doesn't fit well in the main article, consider changing the name of the main article to be more general so that you can summarize this one more efficiently.
• These are examples. More of this type of summarizing could be done throughout the article. I'm not saying to delete information (unless it's extraneous), just try to make better use of your "sister" articles—and create more if needed.
• Formatting. You don't need an ellipsis at the beginning of a quote, such as "...will do everything" in the "Overall Safety Concerns" section.
• The footnote marker for your "54" reference at the end of the blockquote is hanging in space. You'll want to fix that. I don't know how much of that kind of thing is allowed at GAN since I've mostly been on the FAC page. However, zero formatting errors are "overlooked" at FAC, so you'll want to start policing this early.
• Your references are largely devoid of authors. I saw why when I looked at a few. However, some of your references list authors... You can list a corporate author where an individual is not listed, such as "USA Today", or "FIBT". Certainly that would be an important thing if you wanted to list your references in a separate section, like a Bibliography (or change your current "References" section to "Notes" and create a "References" section). However, this would take some work to adjust and this may not preclude it's inclusion as a GA, so I don't know if it's worthwhile making the change. Just a thought.

• There are several deadlinks and ones where the URL changed, so they could be deadlinks soon. All are located here. (I don't like using Yahoo for refs since there's tend to change and die quite frequently)

It's awfully long when it has its own article (twice as long as the luge and skeleton sections) For example, we can probably take out the actual high temperature on the 21st, really the fact that it was moved due to expectations is what matters in this case.
  • Temperature part on 21st removed. What other parts do you suggest? The reason the bobsleigh part is so long is that despite only having three events, it takes six competition days to complete all three events, literally taking up the second half of the Winter Olympics. Pictures
