Mostafa Salameh[edit]

Mostafa Salameh raising seven fingers on completion of the last of the Seven Summits

Created by Ruba.atallah (talk). Nominated by Gerda Arendt (talk) at 09:07, 18 August 2014 (UTC).

  • Does the photo show him being robbed at gunpoint? EEng (talk) 04:32, 19 August 2014 (UTC)
  • Yeah, it's not a good image choice unfortunately. It's low enough resolution that cropping won't help either. If it were high-resolution I might suggest cropping it to head-and-shoulders. —/Mendaliv//Δ's/ 04:49, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
  • Your point of view. Cropped, it would really look like someone at gunpoint. It shows his mentioned achievement and raises curiosity, - about the best a small DYK image can do, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:30, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
  • It does nothing of the sort. A head-and-shoulders crop would actually demonstrate the person's face and features. At 100px the current image is a stick figure with both hands raised on a blue background. It raises confusion rather than curiosity. Either a different image or no image would be better. —/Mendaliv//Δ's/ 05:43, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
Children! Children! Do not quarrel! Let me do a crop and then we can all decide together, OK? EEng (talk) 07:28, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
* Hi all this picture was taken on top of Carstensz Pyramid, (4,884 meters / 16,023 feet) the highest point in the Australia/Oceana continent, Mostafa Salameh is raising his fingers indicating the completion of the Seven Summits.I thought the caption beneath is clear.Ruba.atallah (talk) 15:50, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
Original photo DO NOT USE THIS PHOTO

I've substituted a cropped image (just for the DYK hook -- no change in img used in article). This makes his "V for victory" (or "7 for 7 summits", I guess) and the background snow-capped peaks more apparent. Also, now you can see he's smiling, though of course that could be a nervous smile like I always get when a gun's pointed at me. (Also changed the rollover text -- all subject to the approval of my esteemed fellow editors, of course.) EEng (talk) 21:50, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

I like the crop, but here's the problem: I just noticed that the source of the image doesn't provide a CC-BY-SA release as claimed by the uploader. I've tagged the images accordingly. There needs to be an OTRS contact. Sorry to make trouble. —/Mendaliv//Δ's/ 03:05, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt, we are VERY disappointed in you! Unless this is fixed soon we'll have to drop the img (including in the article itself since we can't run an article at DYK with a known copyright problem). EEng (talk) 03:52, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, I should have looked. I only nominated, and know little about pic licenses. Will ask. Is Philg88,who brought the article to my attention, aware of this? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:40, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
  • Hi EEng thank you for your interest, I will follow up on the issue of the photo, noting that I did all what was required from me, but it seems there was something missing as this is my first experience with Wikipedia. RegardsRuba.atallah (talk) 05:47, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
Oh dear! Sorry Gerda. Before moving the article to main space I checked the pic in the media viewer and it showed it was licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0, which I accepted in good faith. I had no idea there was a problem with it.  Philg88 talk 06:17, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Pleased to report the image issue is cleared up, so review needed. EEng (talk) 02:27, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

  • Article was created under "Articles for creation" and is new enough and long enough. The cropped image is appropriately licensed but the hook is unsatisfactory in that the source does not state that Mostafa Salameh was the first Jordanian to complete the seven summits. Reference #8 does make that statement, and also covers the KHCC claim, but I think it is not an independent source. How about:
  • ALT1a ... that Mostafa Salameh (pictured) is one of fewer than 250 people to have conquered the Seven Summits? (Short and sweet.) 97198 (talk) 14:41, 30 August 2014 (UTC)
  • ALT2 ... that Mostafa Salameh (pictured) rang his partner Krissy, his parents and the King of Jordan via satellite phone from the Mount Everest ?
  • I would like at least Jordanian (was really surprised to learn that there are Jordanian mounteneers at all), and I like the charity + cancer aspect much more than the comparison to a number of people. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:25, 30 August 2014 (UTC)
The trouble with the "first Jordanian" and "charity" claims is that, as far as I can see, they are only referenced to Mostafa Salameh's own website and to an interview he gave to the Arab Irish journal. I think more reliable, third party sources are needed for these claims. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:06, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
First hook struck, understanding your comment. How about the others? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:08, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
Can I point out that when it was said that "we are very disappointed in you" that the "we" did not include me and possibly other members of the community.... and if it had then we would apologise for the personal comment that did not reflect good faith. Do not take this comment to heart. I value your contributions and I would say "we" if I was more bold. Victuallers (talk) 15:46, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
I took that as irony anyway. More important that someone takes the courage to review, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:19, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
. Nice article and I went through some sourcing aspects. Point is, the source doesnt call him the first Jordanian, and lets avoid superlatives. I quickly found Ali Bushnaq, a former Jordan resident (Everest Peace Project) was earlier on the Everest (close to top) and their might be others. Good to go and I suggest my ET (phone home) hook.
