Under the Dome is an American science fiction horror television series that premiered on CBS on June 24, 2013, at 10 pm Eastern.[1] The series was developed by Brian K. Vaughan and based upon the novel of the same name by Stephen King.[2][3] Both Vaughan and King serve as executive producers along with Neal Baer, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, Jack Bender, Steven Spielberg, and Stacey Snider. Baer acts as day-to-day showrunner. Danish director Niels Arden Oplev directed the pilot.[4]

Synopsis

Under the Dome tells the story of the residents of the small town of Chester's Mill, who suddenly find themselves cut off from the rest of the world by a mysterious, impenetrable barrier that surrounds the town. As the town begins to tear itself apart through panic, a small group of people attempt to maintain peace and order while also trying to uncover the truth behind the barrier and how to escape from it.

Production

The project was first announced in November 2009, but it wasn't until two years later that Vaughan was hired to adapt the novel as a series, then set up at cable network Showtime.[6][7] Showtime entertainment president David Nevins felt that the series wasn't right for the network and suggested to Nina Tassler, his CBS counterpart, that she take on the project. Immediately interested, Tassler picked up the series and attached veteran television producer Neal Baer, who is under contract at CBS, to be the showrunner.[4] It was announced in November 2012 that CBS had bypassed ordering a pilot and given Under the Dome a thirteen-episode straight-to-series commitment. "This is a great novel coming to the television screen with outstanding auspices and in-season production values to create a summer programming event," commented Tassler in the official CBS press release.[4]

A teaser trailer was created specially for the 2013 Super Bowl. Instead of showing footage, the teaser directed viewers to the show's official website, where they could enter their street address and postal code to view photos of what their homes and neighborhood would look like "under the dome".[8]

Filming

Filming for the series officially began in Southport and Wilmington, both in North Carolina, on February 28, 2013.[9][10][11]

Dale "Barbie" Barbara (Mike Vogel) buries a man's body in the woods of Chester's Mill. As he tries to escape the town, a mysterious, invisible barrier descends on the borders of the township, trapping everyone inside. Local newspaper reporter Julia Shumway (Rachelle Lefevre), who was investigating mysterious propane deliveries before the barrier appeared, takes a special interest in Barbie after he saves the life of teenager Joe McAlister (Colin Ford), whose parents are trapped out of town. Town selectman "Big Jim" Rennie (Dean Norris) makes an emergency radio announcement, while police chief Duke Perkins (Jeff Fahey) and his deputy Linda Esquivel try to quell the rise of panic in the town. Big Jim's unstable son Junior (Alexander Koch) kidnaps Angie McAlister (Britt Robertson) when he begins to suspect she had an affair with Barbie. Carolyn Hill (Aisha Hinds) and her partner Alice Calvert (Samantha Mathis) are passing through Chester's Mill when the barrier appears and their daughter has what they think is a Diabetic seizure. A link between Big Jim, Chief Perkins and the stockpiled propane is revealed. Julia takes Barbie into her home, where he realizes the man he murdered and buried is her husband, Peter. Duke Perkins suggests to Linda that the entire town is being punished and is about to reveal a dark secret about the town when his pacemaker explodes as he approaches the barrier. The U.S. military descends upon Chester's Mill as the world learns of the unprecedented phenomenon.

Reception

Critical reception

On June 10, 2013, Under the Dome was one of the six series chosen for the Critics' Choice Television Award for Most Exciting New Series.[24]

As of June 25, 2013, the series has a rating of 72 out of 100 on Metacritic – indicating "generally favorable reviews".[25]

On June 27, 2013, Stephen King acknowledging that "the TV version of Under the Dome varies considerably from the book version", called the series "very good" and commented on some of those differences:[2]

[If] you look closely, you’ll see that most of my characters are still there, although some have been combined and others have changed jobs. That’s also true of the big stuff, like the supermarket riot, the reason for all that propane storage, and the book’s thematic concerns with diminishing resources. Many of the changes wrought by Brian K. Vaughan and his team of writers have been of necessity, and I approved of them wholeheartedly. Some have been occasioned by their plan to keep the Dome in place over Chester’s Mill for months instead of little more than a week, as is the case in the book. Other story modifications are slotting into place because the writers have completely re-imagined the source of the Dome.

However many critics have noted similarities of the TV series premise of a city being under a dome, to the 2007 film The Simpsons Movie[26][27]
