Ginger is an Indian Hotels chain operated by Roots Corporation Ltd. (RCL)established in 2003.[1] It is a part of The Indian Hotels Company Limited, a subsidary of the TATA Group. It is a new brand under a category called "Smart Basics Hotels".The first hotel was opened in Whitefield, Bangalore in June, 2004 and was called IndiOne. It was later rebranded Ginger Hotels.[2] Roots Corporation Limited is a fully owned subsidiary of The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL).[3] IHCL,founded in 1902, a part of the Tata Group is India’s largest hotel chain with more than 70 properties in India and abroad and over 100 years' presence in India’s hospitality sector.[4]

Introduction

Roots Corporation Ltd. (RCL) operates Ginger Hotels, the budget hotel brand of the TATA Group. It is completely owned subsidiary of The Indian Hotels Company Limited(IHCL). RCL has 26 assets in the country. It was established in December 2003 [5]

The concept was developed in association with renowned corporate strategy thinker C.K. Prahalad, and the hotels have been designed and developed by ICHL.[6]

Ginger Hotels, with a presence of 26 hotels across the country with Mumbai being the most recent one, has business travellers as their main focus. Ginger Hotels is built around the unique concept of Smart Basics that provides intelligent, thought-out facilities to meet the key needs of travellers, at affordable prices. Smart Basics signifies simplicity, convenience, informality, style, warmth, modernity and affordability, along with warmth and modernity in its approach to product design.[7]

It initially charged Rs 999/night in 2004. Today it charges Rs 1500-2000/night.[8]

Ginger Hotels has won couple of awards over the years including Best Value Hotel 2012: The Lonely Planet Award,[12] Best Budget Hotel: Golden Star Awards 2011-2012, Best Budget Hotel: The India Today Travel Awards 2011, The Best Economy Hotel of The Year (2010-11), Outlook Travelers award 2010-2011,[13] 'SCURRY' Award for Creating New Market / Category : LeapVault Change Leadership Awards 2010[14] . In 2009 Ginger Hotels was honored with the CNBC Travel Award for Best Budget Hotel of the year to name a few, according to a release.[15] [16][17]
