Hagar Hajjar Chemali is an American communications and public affairs strategist who has held a number of senior national security and public affairs positions under the Obama and George W. Bush administrations.[1] She comments and writes on U.S. national security and foreign policy, and is regularly featured on American television networks such as MSNBC, CNN, Bloomberg News, and C-SPAN for her expertise in sanctions, national security, and counter-illicit finance.[2][3]
Chemali is currently the founder and CEO of Greenwich Media Strategists, a company that provides strategic communications consulting and public affairs services to governments and the private sector across the globe.[4]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Chemali was born in America to Hadi Joseph Hajjar, a businessman, and Mirella Hajjar, an art historian, curator, and photographer. Her parents, both from Beirut, fled Lebanon during the Lebanese Civil War, touring the world and then settling in Connecticut, U.S. in 1981. Mirella gave birth to Hagar that year.[5]
Chemali’s interest in international policy started young, when she joined the Model United Nations at the age of fourteen.[6] She graduated from Greenwich Academy in 1999 [7] and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in political science from Columbia University’s Barnard College, and soon after, a master’s degree in international affairs from Columbia University’s School of International and Public affairs.[8] Chemali speaks English, French, Arabic, and Italian.[1]
Career
[edit]Chemali started her political career with an internship at the U.N.’s Department for Political Affairs. [9] During her time there, she developed an interest in counter-terrorism and, specifically, combatting the financial networks that supported terrorist groups. She soon moved from the U.N. to the U.S. government, serving as a Legislative Fellow for Christopher Shays. [9] She then moved to the Treasury Department, where she served as the Middle East Policy Advisor for the Office of Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes. [7]
In 2010, Chemali became the Director for Syria and Lebanon at the White House National Security Council, where she continued to work through the Syrian Crisis. [10] She moved back to the Department of the Treasury in 2014, acting as the Spokesperson for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence. [7]
Chemali ended her government career as the Director of Communications and Spokesperson for the United States Mission to the United Nations, a role she held from 2015 to 2016. [10] From there, she moved to the private sector by starting her consulting company, Greenwich Media Strategies.[10] She currently functions as the founder and CEO of Greenwich Media Strategies, where she provides strategic communications, media consulting, and public relations services in the fields of counter-illicit finance, national security, and business messaging. [11]
In addition to running her consulting business, Chemali holds a number of other positions. She is a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a Trustee at Greenwich Academy, and a Nonresident Senior Fellow with the Atlantic Council’s Global Business & Economics Program. [11] She is also a Director of the Serve America Movement. [12]
Chemali writes opinion pieces for various publications including The Syndication Bureau, [8] NBC News, [13] CNN, [14] TIME, [15] and The Huffington Post. [16] She is frequently featured on television news outlets such as C-SPAN, [17] MSNBC, [18] and CNN. [19]
