Death List

Perhaps you can start by explaining to me exactly what it is that makes Death List notable? If I am not mistaken it is a web forum with a relatively small amount of traffic, and it has had a negligible impact on culture -- you use the example of a Simpsons episode but each one of those has a viewership over 10 million and is *far* more notable than a lightly trafficked webforum. And yes, Death List is lightly trafficked, the Alexa ratings for it have it in the dumps. There are HUNDREDS of celebrity dead pools just like Death List (or similar variants), and none of them are notable, either. Such forums simply don't belong in Wikipedia as anything more than a mention, if at all. Quatloo 07:39, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

You ask why numbers matter. The Death List is a creature only of the web and only of the web, and because of that, its relative significance can be easily measured by comparing its ranking with that of other websites. And it falls well into the range of non-notable websites: if something lives only on the web and few people see it, it is almost by definition not notable. If it had a life outside of the web, you might have a point, but it does not. And you act as if I did not consider keeping the text from the old article. That text added very little value to the understanding of a Dead Pool. The right thing to do here is exactly what I did, give a passing mention to it and move on. Regarding the 'oldest people' list: the source used is

Birthday Table Announced by Ministry of Welfare and Labor Sept. 16, 2005 The announcement calculates the age as of Sept. 30 of the current year.

22 1895/10/12 Choho Fukuhara (M, Okinawa, Japan) Choho Fukuhara (M, Okinawa, Japan), now 109 years 11 months 10 days old

27 1895/12/19 Hiromi Minakata (M, Wakayama, Japan) Hiromi Minakata (M, Wakayama, Japan), now 109 years 9 months 3 days old

Thus Choho (or Chojo) Fukuhara was born Oct 12, 1895 and was Japan's 22nd-oldest living person, as of Sept 30, 2005. Hiromi Minakata was born Dec 19, 1895 and was Japan's 27th-oldest living person, as of Sept 30, 2005.

Regarding the GRG list: This is Wikipedia, I don't think the lists have to be exactly the same. Note, for example, Wikipedia includes articles like Florence Reeves, 111, not (yet) on the GRG list. I think the GRG list uses a slightly higher standard.

In the case of Choho/Chojo Fukuhara, we were told that the oldest living Okinawan male was '110' years old in Oct 2005. As there was only one candidate, it must have been Chojo. Yet we never received official word of his turning 110. So, he's not on the GRG list. But I think for practical purposes we shouldn't short-sheet the bed just because we don't have a willing and capable Japan correspondent at the moment.

The Japan lists are updated once a year, every September, so unless we have a correspondent report from Japan the cases are 'presumed' to be living until the next year's list, when those who are not on the new list are presumed to have passed away.

Hi, when you wikilink people's names from Deaths in 2006, best to check it's the right person, eh? Norman Kelley is not the tenor but a journalist. I am the grandson of Leon Davidson. His obit was published in the newspaper on January 6, 2007 for White Plains, New York. I guess no one really cared to put it up on the internet. The family has been trying to keep it low-key; none of his friends know. We just moved his wife, Doris, to a nursing home close to our house. re: Category:Date of birth missing

Good evening. Per the discussion about privacy concerns expressed at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons#Privacy of birthdays, date of birth should generally not be added to the biographies of living non-public or semi-public figures. So far, that policy has been interpreted fairly strictly with a pretty high bar being set for the definition of "public figures" who are assumed to have given up their rights to privacy.

By the same token, we should not be adding Category:Date of birth missing to articles unless we have made the case that the person meets the "public figures" threshold. Otherwise, we're just baiting new users into adding content even though the community has already said that we shouldn't include that particular data point. Category:Year of birth missing is okay but the exact date is often not. Thanks for your help. Rossami (talk) 00:01, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
