A five-letter code may not be preferred by all, now that there's also a one-letter version, but if a code works, and this does, it's not correct to call it "invalid". Skowhegan article

Hi Corbie. Over on the Skowhegan, Maine article, the entirety of the mascot issue was deleted, initially no discussion. I initiated conversation but the editor who removed it would not budge. Another editor restored it and it was removed again. The section was well sourced and in my response I showed that it was of national interest. I had moved it over to the school district page but it was removed there as well. I feel as if the individuals involved don't understand that in the United States, the mascot issue has been happening for decades and has garnered even international attention. I am not sure what to do about this because according to the sources this isn't a one time recent issue in the town of Skowhegan and it spills over from the high school. Wounded Knee Massacre statement that it was "the largest domestic massacre in U.S. history"

Hello, I am KVJackson (talk) 12:14, 4 January 2020 (UTC). I concur with your 1 Jan 2020 reversion to my edits on the Wounded Knee Massacre page on Wikipedia, in that referencing another Wikipedia article is a circular reference.

Respectfully, a question: the current page statement that Wounded Knee was "the largest domestic massacre in U.S. history."

Does this statement not need a supporting inline citation / reputable source?

There are other massacres in U.S. history that rival or exceed the number of casualties at Wounded Knee on 29 Dec 1890, including the Fort Mims Massacre of 1813 and the Wyoming Valley Massacre of 1778.

I not going to keep correcting the page, you can do that. You're suggesting that I could sit outside a teepee and write down everything I heard. Then copy these words to a dictionary and whala the Indians are now speaking English. As I said on your talk page and in the edit summaries, this is an English-language term. There is no equivalent standalone word in any Indigenous language that is used the way the English term is used. The article is about the use of the English term. I think that is clear if you read the article. Again, take this up on the talk page of the article, with sources that support the changes you are trying to make if you want to press this. Edit-warring without adding any new sourcing is not the way forward, especially with established, stable, sourced content. Best, - CorbieVreccan ☊ ☼ 23:07, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk Abenaki Nation

Hi Corbie. I have already asked Oshwah to take a look but I figured a second set of eyes wouldn't hurt regarding Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk Abenaki Nation. Two IPs and a new editor are both adding unsourced content and are removing sources and sourced content. I warned the new editor twice now, no activity since the second warning. I don't know what else to do at this point. I removed the new content that was unsourced, I simply do not have time to source it and it was a lot. Indigenous girl (talk) 22:44, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

It's on the user adding the content to source it. They also shouldn't be blanking sourced content. This is especially an issue if they have COI here. About how long is normal for a response to editing discussion?

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Native American mascot controversy; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus, rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes and work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. Uh, nope. I don't think you understand how this works. You have been reverted by two other editors. You are the one who is edit-warring. You do not have consensus for the reverts you keep making, and just throwing back a template at the editor who has warned you, after you've been warned,[1] is not convincing. Little Big Man is not in fact in this photo, as the person identified as him is in fact Sharp Nose, a Northern Arapaho. Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [2]

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

Article Angaangaq Lyberth

Hello Corbie, I tried to adapt the article about Angaangaq Lyberth, which you did not appreciate :) I understand that links to Websites are not welcome at Wikipedia. In my opinion the link of the film documentary of German TV which can be seen until 2022 is a reliable ressource. It is done by ZDF which is a public broadcasting station in Germany. They call him a Shaman and Elder. Also the books which are posted as ressources are talking about him as a shaman not about a politician. Please can you give me a short reply. The problem is not with all websites, it's with the type of websites. Event listings, commercial sites, and other unsourced promotional materials are not Reliable Sources for Wikipedia articles. As to his claims to be a spiritual leader in an Indigenous community, these things need to be sourced to the Indigenous communities themselves, not German television presenters or new age sources. Thanks for your answer. Yes in somes ways I get your point, though in Europe, especially Germany, Austria, Switzerland he is much more known and accepted as a significant spiritual teacher- not as a self made "new age-person". Just one question: Why would you not see the "Parliament of the Worlds Religions" (which I had linked) as a reliable source- there are all religions of the world represented and e.g. Dalai Lama or Archbishop Desmond Tutu are one of the honorary advisers. Despite their official-sounding name, the "PoWR", as they call themselves in their fundraising emails, is a private organization that holds interfaith gatherings. A wide range of participants attend and present, and these presenters bona fides are generally not vetted. There are controversies around it.   • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

Hi there,

Thank you for the welcome and the resources! The reason I have been editing the Shamanism page is precisely for the reasons you pointed out: the concept is often used as a means for erasure. In my edits, I tried to focus on the particularity of Indigenous lifeways in order to counteract the notions of universality and pan-Indigeneity prevalent on this page. I believe including Indigenous voices within the conversation on shamanism is crucial to developing an understanding of the term's arbitrariness, as well as its colonial history. This inclusion is something I hope to work towards on this page.

Please let me know of any other resources that may help in this endeavour!

Hi, I have been cleaning up Special:WantedTemplates and noticed that Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:"_+_"oldafdfull"_+_" is pointing to your monobook.js pages. clearly these are false positives (basically a bug in how WP parses .js pages). it would be really great if you could add
// <syntaxhighlight lang=javascript> to the top and
// </syntaxhighlight> to the bottom of those pages. by putting these tags in comments, it won't prevent the javascript from executing, but it will remove those pages from Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:"_+_"oldafdfull"_+_". alternatively, if you are no longer using the monobook skin (many people are using vector these days) and don't need to keep the old page, you could just have the page deleted. thank you in advance for your help.
