Survey of Palestine map[edit]

Survey of Palestine 1942-1958 1-100,000 maps sheet index (georeferenced, Sept 2020)

Hi DutchTreat, I was considering nominating your combined Survey of Palestine image at WP:FP?. In order to qualify I believe it would need to have a higher resolution – do you still have the version before compression?

Please don’t worry if not.

FYI the Survey of Palestine article will be on DYK in a few days so more people will be able to enjoy your work.

Regards,

Onceinawhile (talk) 05:59, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Onceinawhile A FP nomination would be a great honor! As a short-cut, I down-scaled each image of the 24 images when I cropped away the outside frame. The 1,329 × 4,216 pixels file I uploaded is the highest resolution version I have for now. If you feel that keeping the original resolution of each tile is important, then I could move forward in that direction. There is another change that I had in mind. The West Bank delimiter and the border are not clear in the tiled version. I have been thinking about re-drawing them to be 5 pixels wide to make these markings visible from the combined version. Let me know your thoughts. - DutchTreat (talk) 11:12, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi DutchTreat, I think the original resolution would allow compliance with the WP:FP? "high resolution" criteria. I had a look just now for other Featured Pictures which have been similarly compiled from a number of map sheets, and found only these four: File:Daedongyeojido-full.jpg, File:Turgot map of Paris - Norman B. Leventhal Map Center.jpg, File:USPostRoadMap1804.jpg,and File:Waldseemuller map 2.jpg - they are all very large files.
That's an interesting idea regarding the West Bank line. I wonder if there is an easier way to do it without having to redraw it, by bringing out specific colours more clearly.
Onceinawhile (talk) 13:51, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Onceinawhile Wonderful input. Let me start working on it. I'll need a few days to create the next version. - DutchTreat (talk) 14:24, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I am still working on georeferencing the tiles. So far, completed only the first five of 24. Taking longer than expected to get them cleaned up. - DutchTreat (talk) 20:00, 27 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Does Georeferencing mean that we could use it for historical coordinate-pinned location maps? I recently created Template:Nakba map – it would look even better with this map as the base layer. Onceinawhile (talk) 20:15, 27 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Onceinawhile The end result will be projected as one flat plane. Thus, I would expect that the coordinate-pinned technique you are using would work. The Palestine Grid is my input directly off the maps which gets transformed into a universal world coordinate system in QGIS. It's a slow process, but making progress. There are still some slight variations of the grid between each map. Trying to find a solution that will eliminate any of these irregularities. - DutchTreat (talk) 14:27, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi DutchTreat, that is wonderful to hear. FYI User:Zero0000 (who wrote the Palestine grid article) and I have been working on some of the other historical maps which use the Palestine Grid, for individual sites such as villages. I am happy to try to help with any irregularities if I can. Onceinawhile (talk) 20:48, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi DutchTreat. I find QGIS very difficult to penetrate. I don't want to load maps; I just want to transform some locations from Palestine 1923 to WGS 84 and vice-versa. Is there a simple way to do that? Thanks. Zerotalk 07:30, 1 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Zero0000 I agree that QGIS has more functionality than you need. Try a coordinate transform tool like EPSG.io with EPSP:28191. Good luck! Let me know if you have other related questions. - DutchTreat (talk) 11:45, 1 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's perfect, thanks! I had been using a smooth function through the corner points of the 1:100K maps, which have the latitude and longitude within 0.1s printed on the maps. (NW corner of map 20 has a typo: 14.7 should be 41.7.) But then the difference between the Clarke 1880 spheroid and WGS 84 was giving me annoying horizontal errors of 70-80m. I found that page can be used like this: https://epsg.io/trans?s_srs=28191&t_srs=4326&x=165000&y=220000 which makes it easy to employ in scripts. Cheers, Zerotalk 14:05, 1 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Zero0000 Success! Credit goes to the folks at Klokan Technologies GmbH for offering such a useful and easy to use web service. - DutchTreat (talk) 10:33, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Onceinawhile, Zero0000 - Please find the high-resolution sheet index after georeferencing (10k x 30k pixels). This ended up taking longer than expected to process each tile through QGIS. Plus, getting the borders readable seemed like an important aspect for reading the coordinate system. Let me know if you want any changes - DutchTreat (talk) 12:24, 9 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi DutchTreat, this is fantastic work. Thank you for all your efforts in producing this. I have added it to the top of Survey of Palestine, and have nominated it at WP:FPC.
I am keen to ensure we benefit from the georeferencing work - please could you let me know the coordinates of the edges? I would like to make a module equivalent to Module:Location map/data/Italy Rome Antiquity. Also, to make it work best I think we should crop off the extra few hundred pixels of white space on the left, right and bottom edges of the image. Onceinawhile (talk) 15:43, 9 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Onceinawhile I see the importance of using this as a basemap for a Module:Location map. I'll need to calculate the lat/long for the edges of the combined image. In the next version, I will trim the empty pixels along the edges. One potential concern is that this map is drawn and projected using a CRS called "EPS:28191 - Palestine 1923". Most web mapping software use the projection of WGS 84. Thus, the pins generated by the location module might be inaccurate. I'm not an expert with the Location map module, so it's possible that the Palestine Grid might work since it is an "equirectangular projection." I think it's worth trying it and validating the results. - DutchTreat (talk) 10:26, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi DutchTreat, ok that makes sense. I agree it would be good to test the results and then we can tweak the module coords if needed. Onceinawhile (talk) 11:28, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
