Help!

Hi, Dylan! I'm afraid I need some help. I set up a user page on the Swedish wiki as you suggested, but it seems to have confused my English user page. The English user page looks fine when I open it, but but when I try to use the links at the top of the page (my talk, my preferences etc) they take me to an English version of my Swedish identity - and tell me it doesn't exist. What to do? --TheSupercargo (talk) 06:19, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

And look at that, now my signature has disappeared too. :-((( —Preceding unsigned comment added by TheSupercargo (talkcontribs) 06:21, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

OK, panic over, I logged out and logged back in ... but that was weird.--JohnTheSupercargo 16:21, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Re: Happy FlyingToaster's Day!

Aww, thanks so much! I... I think I have some dirt in my eye... FlyingToaster 05:20, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

Can I have a day?

HELLO Dylan620. Can you please give me mai own day? I'm very good at reverting vandalism, and have created a lot of pages. Webster6Yo, So 06:19, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

Sorry Webster, I don't accept self-requests, unless they've done something pretty damned notable enough; here-average-everyday vandal-fighting doesn't satisfy that. If you want a day, another user will have to request it for you (and please don't ask another user to request it for you, that's just cheating). Also, your first few edits – as well as your persistent requesting of rollback – remind me of a certain someone... Cheers, Dylan620 Efforts · Toolbox 13:09, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
Hmm..what are you suggesting exactly? I must admit that I do not see any striking similarities in edit pattern. decltype (talk) 15:13, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
I'm not pointing out any striking similarities to the original account (Fila3466757) itself, but rather to more recent socks, such as Valerian456, Bialystok453, Stanley Bulgaria, and Ciaran UK. --Dylan620 3 My master 15:45, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
Looking especially at the contributions of Valerian456, I'd have to agree with you. The editing pattern is strikingly similar. decltype (talk) 15:57, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
Alright, I'll file an SPI when I'm back on my regular computer; unfortunately, the Wii doesn't support JavaScript (I file SPI's using Twinkle). --Dylan620 3 My master 17:15, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
Ah, no need, I filed one already. decltype (talk) 17:21, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

Re: RfB

Thanks for the offer! At the moment, I think it's best I wait a few months; after all, I've only been an admin for about 8 months. When/if I'm interested, I'll be sure to contact you. :) Regards, –Juliancolton | Talk 20:24, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm probably not the best person to ask, but Wikipedia:Abuse filter describes it fairly well (technical details at bug 15684). Basically, administrators with the abuse filter editor flag get to create and edit filters—they can then set specific actions taken by the filter, such as block, warn, disallow, remove autoconfirmed status, etc. The code, however, is far above my head. –Juliancolton | Talk 23:34, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Would you be interested in joining this project? We need more editors who share a burden for rescuing promising editors who have gotten into serious trouble because of behavioral issues. IF (a fundamental condition!) they are interested in reforming and adapting to our standards of conduct, and are also willing to abide by our policies and guidelines, rather than constantly subverting them, we can offer to help them return to Wikipedia as constructive editors. Right now many if not most users who have been banned are still active here, but they are here as socks or anonymous IPs who may or may not be constructive. We should offer them a proper way to return. If you think this is a good idea, please join us. -- Brangifer (talk) 04:18, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Bat Masterson

I was actually searching for references to the New York Morning Telegraph when I arrived at the Bat Masterson page. I'd never read it so I began to make corrections and additions as I was reading it. Much of what I added came from the De Arment book referred to in the article and further research on my own which I would be glad to submit when I am finished. I have written a 16 hour mini series that covers Masterson's life to the Dodge City Peace Commission. Four hours, covering his later life to go. I have spent more than 25 years researching Bat Masterson. All of what I added is generally accepted as factual with the exception of the alleged shootout over his brother's death and I covered my ass by pointing out that the story was only legendary. I have a photo of Bat's grave and a film reference but what do you want for me to authenticate them? BTW there is a reference in the article to Robert Ballard being Bat's grandson. I went to the Ballard article and there is no mention of this and as far as I knew Bat never had any children. No children were mentioned in either De Arment's biography, your own article or in anything else I've ever read. I'm really interested to find out that Masterson had children. The article wasn't too bad, but with obvious gaps which I tried to fill in. Why not the Second Battle of Adobe Walls which it indisputably was? Why leave out Ben Thompson, Billy Dixon, The Battle of the Plaza, the details of Spike Kenedy, etc.? I never finished the article as I was editing as I was going along and quit when I found my edits rejected with what I consider a waspish reason.

PS I don't know why I am on this page. Originally I was rejected by someone else, your mentor I believe, something like Victorean or something nearly like that. I have no "talk page" and I don't know what one is. I am on Facebook and I can be reached at marcomilioni@yahoo.com. I am also working on Marco Polo, Pope Gregory X, John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood (I am curating an exhibition of Catherwood's Egyptian Drawings in December) but I feel in no way competent to begin editing a Wikipedia page on those topics.... but Bat. That's a different story.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. I was the one who reversed your edits and upon review, it looks like they were good, and I was wrong to revert them. I apologize for the inconvenience. It's not a negative reflection on you - sometimes when we're fighting vandalism, we reverse something we shouldn't because it appears vandal-like at quick glance. Your edits aren't lost - you can find them in the history of the page for restoration. Also, might I suggest registering and getting a username? Registering comes with many benefits - one is that your edits tend to be scrutinized for vandalism a little less, as most vandalism comes from unregistered users. Again, I apologize for the misunderstanding and hope you will stay with us here at Wikipedia. Dylan here is a very experienced user and can help answer your questions, and I am also happy to help. Cheers, Vicenarian (talk) 11:37, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

My RfA

Thank you for participating in my "RecFA", which passed with a final tally of 153/39/22. There were issues raised regarding my adminship that I intend to cogitate upon, but I am grateful for the very many supportive comments I received and for the efforts of certain editors (Ceoil, Noroton and Lar especially) in responding to some issues. I wish to note how humbled I was when I read Buster7's support comment, although a fair majority gave me great pleasure. I would also note those whose opposes or neutral were based in process concerns and who otherwise commented kindly in regard to my record.
I recognise that the process itself was unusual, and the format was generally considered questionable - and I accept that I was mistaken in my perception of how it would be received - but I am particularly grateful for those whose opposes and neutrals were based in perceptions of how I was not performing to the standards expected of an administrator. As much as the support I received, those comments are hopefully going to allow me to be a better contributor to the project. Thank you. Very much. LessHeard vanU (talk) 12:33, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

RE: Sock/Meat Puppet

Hi, my creative name is TG, and I am a co-founder of Northwest Nerdcore. I understand that you have reason to believe me a sock/meat puppet, and I wanted to give reason why I am not. First and foremost, I have never felt the need to open a Wikipedia account because any editing I have done in the past has been trivial at best, prior to the afd that brought many names into question. Second, having been a major part of a music promotion collective that focused on several sub genres of music, all of them having Wikipedia articles, I realize that if I want have my contributions taken seriously the first step is having an account. Third, I will continue to make edits within the Wikipedia guidelines to the best of my ability, the purpose of me creating an account in the first place. Hopefully these edits will be proof enough that I am not, nor ever have been, a puppet in any respect. Understand that I am new, and have just a basic grasp of how Wikipedia works, so I'm bound to make mistakes.

Thank you --Nwnerdcore (talk) 01:18, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Dylan620, this user came onto the IRC help channel, and I chatted to himher. This would appear to be a genuine misunderstanding, because of the nature of their first edit, and so I have advised them how to contact you in the manner above. I thought that, by them speaking to you and explaining, this would be the best way to sort it out. I have further advised them to continue editing in the meantime, and hope that you will get back to them. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  01:22, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm a bit disappointed...

Hi there. I'm a bit disappointed by this "!vote" of yours. You should always resist the temptation to !vote on other people's behavior and keep your comments based on the matter at hand. If you ever want to try adminship, I predict that such comments will gather some opposition and this rightly so. I usually think you do a nice job here so I wanted to point this out to you so you can avoid such things in the future. Regards SoWhy 17:23, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

"You get banned, you lose your userpage?"

When did this begin? Some users choose to blank it once they are banned, but is it now a rule that I'm missing? (Also, your editbox message is hard on the eyes, maybe you could tone it down?)  iMatthew :  Chat  20:26, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

Ha, I was just about to post on your talk page about my edit. :P I would like to point you to WP:BAN#User pages, which states that the userpages of banned users must be replaced with a notice of the ban. Also, with regards to the editnotice:  Done. Cheers, Dylan620 (Toolbox Alpha, Beta) 20:35, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing that, and I read the page. It said "may be replaced." In this case, I find it should be left as is for now. There are many people around that may wish to get information about him while he's up at ANI, and just recently blocked. It's best to leave it, IMO.  iMatthew :  Chat  20:37, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
By the way, you mind fixing that on your userpage as well? It's very hard to look at. :(  iMatthew :  Chat  20:38, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
That's going to be a hell of a lot of work, but I'll get right on it. Dylan620 (Toolbox Alpha, Beta) 20:40, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
All I'm thinking if removing the black background. Also, I've sent you an e-mail.  iMatthew :  Chat  20:40, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

Regarding Dougstech's userpage, while you may be correct about the general rule, it might be taken as just a little bit unseemly to move so quickly to blank the talkpage of a somewhat established user whose ban is still under discussion on ANI and who may still make an unblock request. It could be taken as a teensy bit like gloating about the outcome, which would be ironic since that's what got DougsTech himself into his most recent round of trouble. In the future it might be best if you waited just a bit longer in this type of situation. Best regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 20:42, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I don't think any gloating is involved here. Dylan saw that my userspace was destroyed when I got banned and understandably assumed that to be the rule.[1] Kind regards, Guido den Broeder (talk, visit) 23:03, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
I know I'm late to reply, but Guido is correct – I did not intend to gloat, and I apologize if it came off as such. Cheers, Dylan620 (Toolbox Alpha, Beta) 13:44, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Hey Dylan. The Bacon Challenge actually wrapped up (see also: Angels on horseback) on May 27. I went ahead and scheduled the next one to produce articles and DYK hooks for 2010's (National Pig Day) on March 1, so I would expect the event to get going again in December or perhaps the beginning of January. The maple bacon donut was created as part of the 2009 event.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate (it was created in a userspace out of convenience), and if you come across bacon related subjects of interest, feel free to post them on my talk page, or either of the bacon challenge talk pages (links at top of my talk page). There's a bacon cabal, of sorts, that's been having good fun following up on this topic area. Cheers! ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:55, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
