[edit]
The Military history WikiProject Newsletter
Issue XII - February 2007
Project news
  • The new consolidated review department—combining the existing project peer review and A-Class review with a listing of project articles undergoing various external featured content candidacies and reviews—is now operational.
  • Two new templates have been introduced:
  • An effort is being made to have task forces maintain annotated bibliographies for their topic areas; several task forces have already begun to construct them.
  • The project reached two important milestones this month: 500 active members and 30,000 articles in the assessment system.
  • A military version of Wikipe-tan has been created; a new userbox featuring one of the images is available for interested project members.
From the coordinators

The third project coordinator elections have now concluded. Seven coordinators have been selected to serve for the next six months:

Carom (talk · contribs)
FayssalF (talk · contribs)
Kirill Lokshin (talk · contribs)
Kyriakos (talk · contribs)
LordAmeth (talk · contribs)
Petercorless (talk · contribs)
Wandalstouring (talk · contribs)

Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to all of the candidates who put themselves forward for this responsibility, and to the retiring coordinators for all of their efforts to improve the project!

Kirill Lokshin, Lead Coordinator

Current proposals and discussions
  • {{Infobox National Military}} is being developed to replace the old {{Military}} template; comments on the draft version are welcome.
  • A proposal to introduce a category tree for military campaigns, as well as a number of associated classification guidelines, is being discussed; comments would be very appreciated.

Bio: Rajkumar Kanagasingam

[edit]

Hi,

An editor is continuously vandalising my Bio over dispute related to Talk:Anton Balasingham. The editor tried hard to delete my Bio from wikipedia. You can see the evidence here(1) and here(2)' The editor is taking an undue interest over my Bio and deleted over Citation. I have restored the information. I requested an Administrator to check my Bio whether Citations are enough. I also taken this matter for Request for Comment. Though I have off-line media archives(which are attached on Talk:Rajkumar Kanagasingam, I couldn't bring it to the articles. Now I am very much frustrated. Please help me on this matter.Rajkumar Kanagasingam 05:44, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hmm, I see what you're saying, and understand your reservations. Let me mull on this one for awhile. However, I do think that the block format for the quotes within the section is distracting. I'm not sure that the quotes even need to be included. Having the statements that they backup + citation should be sufficient.

If your concern is that your edits would be automatically flagged for revert, why don't you tell me about them and I could implement them? (After review, of course.)

Best regards,

I am not here to fight. Please read my comment on your edits in the article NDF - Talk:National_Development_Front#Congress_campaigns_against_terrorism --Fear the Fire 11:10, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I have seen your repeated edits in the page in NDF page. You are trying to put your POV in this page. Please bring facts and references to prove your points, otherwise. Please read the discussion page before you edit the page. The points in the book 'AHANKARI' are not related to NDF, if you read it. Why you are very much interested to relate NDF to Lashkar and other islamist group? --- Sundaram7 06:45, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you are being checked for sockpuppetery and Fear the Fire is being checked as well. I did notice that several accounts had been created for the sole purpose of editing this one article. I did take a look into the contribs of the users in question here and have to applaud Aksi_great's decision of protecting the article until disruptive socks are dealt with. My contribs in the article were directed to reverting to a version which was attributed to David Bukay (University of Haifa). Other than keeping that statement I neither have the time nor the inclination to look into the matter or respond to hollow claims. Freedom skies| talk  10:02, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your arbitration evidence

[edit]

For your reference, the arbitrators generally request that statements on the requests for arbitration page be no longer than approximately 500 words. Your current section, including rebuttals, is well over that length, and it would be desirable for you to shorten your overall presentation. Please bear in mind that the only issue right now is whether the Arbitration Committee should hear the case, and that if the case is accepted, you will have a further opportunity to present a statement, evidence, and workshop proposals. Thank you. Newyorkbrad 17:48, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Sadhu

[edit]

If you have time, check out The Sadhu page. I've updated it extensively. Better still, please go to the peer review section and give me some feedback. Zuracech lordum 10:55, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your assistance. Nevertheless, I believe the article is incomplete somehow. I have gotten in touch with Gotham Chopra and I have requested for clarification and he has said that he would announce and offer more information about the comic book on his blog at intentbog.
More importantly, it is my lack of knowledge regarding Hindu mythology that makes me unsure about adding too much information. Thus, it would be ideal if someone familiar with it be able to do some work that is verifiable. However, you are on a wikibreak hence I do not wish to disturb you.
Also, while my interest in the Sadhu comics will ensure an updated page for the series, I cannot say the same for the other comics in the Virgin line. I personally have not checked them out and I did not like the Preview released hence it may suffer. But hopefully, there will be other users in the future. Edit summaries

[edit]

For convenience of other editors (compassion :-)), please remember to explain your edits either through edit summaries or on talk page. This helps other editors understand what's going on. A few Sources

[edit]

The founder of Zen in China was the legendary Bodhidharma, who came to China from India in the late 5th cent. AD He taught the practice of "wall-gazing" and espoused the teachings of the Lanka-Vatara Sutra (whose chief doctrine is that of "consciousness-only" ; see Yogacara ), which he passed on to his successor Hui-k'o (487-593). -- The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. Copyright 2006 Columbia University Press

Besides these mythical personages the Zen monastary gives shelter to some other historical charecters deeply rooted not only with Zen but with Buddhism as a whole. Bodhidharma as the founder of Zen Buddhism naturally occupies a chief seat of honor besides Buddha sakyamuni. - Manual of Zen Buddhism: by Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki

Bodhidharma (6th century CE), legendary Indian monk who is credited with the establishment of the Chan (Zen) school of Buddhism that flourished in East Asia. Considered the 28th Indian sucsessor in a direct line from the Buddha Gotama, Bodhidharma is recognized by the Chinese Chan schools as their first patriarch. - Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of World Religions By Wendy Doniger, Merriam-Webster

All Zen masters, again without a single exception, accepted and honred Bodhidharma as the first patriarch. - Complete Book of Zen by Wong Kiew Kit

It was due to Bodhidharma that Zen came to be the Buddhism of China. - Essays in Zen Buddhism By Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki

All Zen masters accepted and honored Bodhidharma as the first patriarch. Genalogies were well maintained by Zen masters and students, all genalogies without exception started from Bodhidharma. The koan "What is the intention of the first patriarch coming from the west?" was frequently used to test the student' development in Zen cultivation. - Complete Book of Zen by Grandmaster Wong Kiew Kit

In the Shaolin Monastary, huge charecters for "Shaolin Zen Monastary" were written on one of it's long walls. The building were Bodhidharma taught Zen was named the Bodhidharma chamber. The pavillion named after Bodhidharma is in the main building of the Shaolin monastary, the First patricarch temple built in his honor still stands in the monastary complex some distance from the main building, and the cave behind the building is still called the Bodhidharma cave. - The Art of Shaolin Kung Fu: The Secrets of Kung Fu for Self-Defense, Health and Enlightenment By Grandmaster Wong Kiew Kit

Arising as Chan in China in the 6th century (introduced by Bodhidharma), it divided into two schools, the Southern school, which believed in sudden enlightenment, and the Northern school, which believed in gradual enlightenment. -- 1994-2007 Britannica Concise Encyclopedia.

Zen Buddhism , a Japanese version of the meditative and ecstatic form of Mahāyāna (see Mahāyāna ) Buddhism, is said to have been brought to China from India by the fifth century CE Bodhidharma, the twenty-eighth successor to Gautama Buddha (see Gautama Buddha ), the Buddha Sākyamuni. -- Dictionary of Asian Mythology 2001, originally published by Oxford University Press 2001.

Bodhidharma East Asia Ta-mo of China, Daruma of Japan–the founder of the Ch'an Tsung, or ‘inner-light school’ of Buddhism. This sect was one of the most distinctive and original products of the Chinese mind, while its culmination as Zen in Japan has had a profound influence not only on East Asia, but even on the West. -- Dictionary of World Mythology 1997, originally published by Oxford University Press 1997.

Bodhidharma (Chin., P'u-t'i-ta-mo or Tamo ; Jap., Bodaidaruma or Daruma , c. 5th cent. CE). The 28th successor ( hassu ) in line from Śākyamuni Buddha, and the first Chinese patriarch of Ch'an/Zen Buddhism. -- The Concise Oxford Dictionary of World Religions 1997, originally published by Oxford University Press 1997.

The Sadhu nomination

[edit]

Thanks for informing me but do you really think it's ready? I, for one, hope that the excessive wordage be cut down and that some improvements be made such as additional reviews, sales information and so on.

Moreover, I sent an e-mail to the writer, Gotham Chopra, detailing a number of questions which I hoped that he would answer and although I have obtained my response, I am unable to use it because it has been obtained through e-mail and hence constitutes original research. You can see the transcript of what Gotham Chopra had to say here (I copied the html code from the e-mail).

Obviously, this resource cannot be verified and trusted to put up on the page and I did ask Mr. Chopra to help me by including it in his personal blog but he has not replied for a while and I have been preoccupied with university to persevere with my request. What do you think about using this amateur interview as a resource? Do you think anything can be done so as to make it usable? Of course, this all hinges on whether you trust that I actually did talk to the writer and did not make this up! Zuracech lordum 18:17, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

True. At least there will be some reviwewing process unlike the "peer review" section where no one bothers. Just have to see how it goes then. Zuracech lordum 19:22, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I dont perticularily care about the status of the article, but favoritism, 'posetive' or 'negative', is infactual - thus your edit of the introduction to include four martial arts representing different religious communities is unwarranted. One could just as easily argue for a regional distribution - north/south/east/west, or any other pointless catagorisation - I happened to choose martial arts reflecting North India, Central India, North-East India, and South India - and chose based on status in popular revival. You are quite clearly trying to artifically project a cosmopolitan image in your choice of arts - perhaps an admirable sentiment - but also infactual. Should Pehlwani, effectively a competition sport, be listed alongside actual combat arts that reflect Indian martial tradition more accuratly? Its up to you. For your benefit, I will also point out that Pehlwani is not infact Muslim in origin, im not sure which art is meant to be Buddhist in origin, and that one of Kalarippayattu's most senior masters is a Muslim. Letting the arts speak for themselves instead of trying to bias their presentation might have been better - Indian martial arts are usually based on dharmic philosophy, but have been just as open to other religions as Buddhist Kung Fu has. On that philosophical note, isnt artificially projecting a model diversity, as bad as artificially projecting a model singularity? Sorry for my uncharecteristically arid reply, but im feeling perticularily nihilist today.

I do have a wiki account, but dont bother signing on anymore, because most articles are inevitably currupted by fanatic/obsessive unreferenced editing.

P.S. I appretiate your contribution to the article, and it is nice to see you are also contributing to the Virgin Comics articles. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 217.44.114.194 (talk) 05:12, 1 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Hi! Well I did not really do a thorough review. I just pointed out some apparent shortcomings. When you people work further, you can let me know so that I can do a review. Yes I saw it had been in peer review for some time, and placed it in Wikipedia:Notice board for India-related topics. Unfortunately peer reviews are lukewarm these days. Anyway, please try to improve the article. Will have a look later. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:36, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
