Tories in Canada

[edit]

Hi Hameltion, thanks for the work on disambiguating Tory/Tories. It made me realise how many Canadian articles use the nickname as shorthand for the Conservative/PC parties, when not using nicknames for other parties; that sort of treatment strikes me as not NPOV. I think Wikipedia needs to treat all parties with equal respect in nomenclature, so I've gone through and changed most of the references to either "Conservatives" or "PCs"; kept some where it was historically appropriate, or appropriate in context (eg "Red Tories"). Thank you for drawing this issue to my attention. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 16:50, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Mr Serjeant Buzfuz: Thanks, that seems fair; a quick search for tories canada shows that most news articles use "Conservatives" anyway. There's a lot more disambiguating to do if you want to install DisamAssist and help out yourself. And you may be interested in participating in the move discussion I opened for the base article name Tory. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 17:27, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just commented on the proposals. I agree with the first, not the second, as explained there. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 18:12, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As for current news media, the new Conservative Party has deprecated the use of "Tories", for political / ideological reasons. Media is probably following that lead. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 18:14, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Votbek, been a minute. Great to see you've begun starting some articles yourself. Unfortunately this guy doesn't seem to be wiki notable. Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to articles about living or recently deceased people, and edits relating to the subject (living or recently deceased) of such biographical articles, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Suggestions for AFD discussions

[edit]

Have you thought of using source assessment tables in AFD discussions? Here is an example article for deletion discussion with a source assessment table.

Generally speaking the citation templates can be copied from the articles. They are much better than a link, because they make it transparent what the source is.

I have noticed with skaters that sometimes the article on a skater's double-partner has some additional sources that are worth appraising and adding to the table. And sometimes a Google news search on the name of one partner yields different results than the other partner, but the individual results are applicable to both partners and therefore worth appraising.-- Toddy1 (talk) 15:04, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I find that I can usually address most of those tables' points just by writing. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 19:29, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Hameltion:, could you please create an article for Australian actor Mitchell Hope, who is best known for appearing as main character Ben on the Descendants film franchise and in the film Let It Snow alongside Kiernan Shipka? CheAjlt (talk) 01:15, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @CheAjlt, it looks like there is enough coverage to make this actor notable. I'll add him to my to-do list. Out of curiosity, have you any relation to user Votbek who has phrased requests similarly to me before? Hameltion (talk | contribs) 01:53, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, being honest I’m kinda busy right now with other projects so I just copypasted from that one, with just changing the name and link, sorry. CheAjlt (talk) 01:58, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

I've put this request on two other pages but it doesn't seem to be getting any traction, so I figured I'd try here.

For the women's basketball task force, the link currently leads here, which is an out of date task force link. A few editors and I have been using this task force page as a more up to date list of things needing doing related to WNBA articles. Would it be beneficial to re-direct the link in this banner shell to the latter page?

Thanks for any direction you can provide.

Hi @Swimmer33: I'm not the most active in this area but this seems reasonable. Responded further at Template talk:WikiProject Women's sport. Thanks for getting back! I've noticed you around in places and it seemed like where I went you were the last person to comment on talk pages, so I figured I'd ping you. Swimmer33 (talk) Swimmer33 (talk) 17:01, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Cancelo (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hello @Hameltion:, I just notice that there's already an article for Mitchell Hope, could you please help us improve it? CheAjlt (talk) 16:21, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please improve is pretty general ... added incoming links and copyedited slightly. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 16:36, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How about more information like biography and career, even a picture please? CheAjlt (talk) 16:40, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Didn't find a freely licensed photo in the usual places. I enjoy finding sources even for subjects I'm not that interested in, but someone else has done that already. I'll leave you to expand the article. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 17:09, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
