WikiCup 2019 May newsletter
The second round of the 2019 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to scored 32 points to advance into round 3. Our top four scorers in round 2 all scored over 400 points and were:
- Cas Liber (1210), our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three DYKs. He also made good use of the bonus points available, more than doubling his score by choosing appropriate articles to work on.
- Kosack (750), last year's runner up, with an FA, a GA, two FLs, and five DYKs.
- Adam Cuerden (480), a WikiCup veteran, with 16 featured pictures, mostly restorations.
- Zwerg Nase (461), a seasoned competitor, with a FA, a GA and an ITN item.
Other notable performances were put in by Barkeep49 with six GAs, Ceranthor, Lee Vilenski, and Canada Hky, each with seven GARs, and MPJ-DK with a seven item GT.
So far contestants have achieved nine featured articles between them and a splendid 80 good articles. Commendably, 227 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2019 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. The judges are pleased with the thorough GARs that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Flags
Hi Lee, the flag thing seems intractable with two camps: 1) obey MOS per WP:WIAFA and 2) stick with personal preferences per WP:OWN. Not much hope there. In the meantime, I'll link you to one of the 111 featured lists which has many flags, but which is joyously MOS-compliant, and nicely so: Laureus World Sports Award for Action Sportsperson of the Year. I've done several dozen like this, and the attention to detail, to MOS, to accessibility, to readers who aren't the same as the majority, has been widely appreciated. I hope, seeing it, gives you some hope that we can get there, eventually. The Rambling Man (talk) 19:49, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
- As a quick update The Rambling Man - I've gotten Ohconfucius to update the flagicon script here to include flagathlete. In my eyes, this is the best version for sporting events, like used in 1962 Tour de France, and seems the most MOS accurate. I'm going to give it a test and see how it works. NPR Newsletter No.18
Hello Lee Vilenski/Archives/2019,
- WMF at work on NPP Improvements
Niharika Kohli, a product manager for the growth team, announced that work is underway in implementing improvements to New Page Patrol as part of the 2019 Community Wishlist and suggests all who are interested watch the project page on meta. Two requested improvements have already been completed. These are:
- Allow filtering by no citations in page curation
- Not having CSD and PRODs automatically marked as reviewed, reflecting current consensus among reviewers and current Twinkle functionality.
- Reliable Sources for NPP
Rosguill has been compiling a list of reliable sources across countries and industries that can be used by new page patrollers to help judge whether an article topic is notable or not. At this point further discussion is needed about if and how this list should be used. Please consider joining the discussion about how this potentially valuable resource should be developed and used.
- Backlog drive coming soon
Look for information on the an upcoming backlog drive in our next newsletter. If you'd like to help plan this drive, join in the discussion on the New Page Patrol talk page.
- News
- Following a request for comment, the subject-specific notability guideline for pornographic actors and models (WP:PORNBIO) was removed; in its place, editors should consult WP:ENT and WP:GNG.
- Discussions of interest
- A request for bot approval for a bot to patrol two kinds of redirects
- There has been a lot discussion about Notability of Academics
- What, if anything, would a SNG for Softball look like

Flags again
As if it were needed, you now have four editors, three of whom are independent of the snooker project, all commenting at FAC that the flags should be changed to be MOS compliant. Contrary to that you have one user who is using personal preference in an attempt to maintain the status quo. I would think that's sufficient now to implement a MOS-compliant change to the article as you have attempted previously, e.g. at the very least including the names of the countries on the first instance. Or even going with the athlete flag approach I think you noted. I've used flags extensively in the Laureus Sports Awards featured topic, that might be another approach. But once that's done, we can get on with the meat of the FAC. As McCandlish noted, with luck Tvx1 will have moved onto something else and we can focus on making this a page Wikipedia can be proud of. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:39, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
- The Rambling Man - I'm on it. I think the first individual rounds makes sense for this. Let me know what you think. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 21:04, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
- I agree, although the qualifiers will need them too. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:06, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
- I was already on that. It's quite a process to move it to flagathlete, sadly. Might be a way to do it on AWB, but I'm not that smart. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 21:12, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
- Cool. I'll try to get to a full review tomorrow. Best wishes to you. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:54, 20 May 2019 (UTC)

Tell you what, now the nom has been archived, shall I just work on the article itself rather than leave you a bunch of comments? Then you can renominate once you're happy? The Rambling Man (talk) 14:42, 22 May 2019 (UTC)
- The Rambling Man Realistically, that would make sense. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 14:43, 22 May 2019 (UTC)
- I think we're nearly good to go again. I note that the previous snooker project regulars who kept fighting to retain the non-MOS-compliant version have kept quiet since you made your excellent edits to resolve the flags issue, and as far as I can see, the rest of the article is in good condition. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:11, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
,:::The Rambling Man thanks for your help! I agree. I do have to sit out two weeks due to it failing, however it's promising. If it is simply that editors didn't like the flag template over flagicon, that's fine, as you can't really argue with flagathlete. We could be on the edge of a way to get a snooker FA (and thus potentially more). I have a few GAs (around 5) awaiting review, and quite a few that have already passed that could also make the jump given some love. - Bader azem, you can do this at Wikipedia:Changing username specifically Special:GlobalRenameRequest. However, as you are trying to create an article on someone with that name, it is against the WP:Username policy Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 19:44, 25 May 2019 (UTC)
