Hello, Madcloud01. I noticed that you have recently edited a large number of articles for authors, adding to them recent or forthcoming books related to MacMillan press. Because of this I need to ask you if you have a relation to the press, either as a direct employee or someone who has been contracted to update the Wikipedia pages for the publisher. If so, this is considered a conflict of interest, and Wikipedia has specific policies on how to manage editing in those circumstances. Reply to me here, and then I can give you more information. Ok, thanks I see that now. I'm going to check with some other editors to see if there have been any decisions that would help us understand what is "proper" in this situation. As long as you are adding simple bibliographic entries it may not be an issue. Generally, we ask editors with a conflict of interest to refrain from direct editing of articles (instead posting a request for an edit on the talk page of the article). However, with some kinds of factual information direct edits are allowed. I haven't run into this one before. I'll get back to you. Hi, again, Madcloud01. I did my homework by the lazy method, asking someone who knows much more than I do, so I think I have some reasonable advice for you. First, I want to thank you for the clean-up that you've done on some articles you encounter - it's a real boon to Wikipedia to attract editors with excellent language and grammar skills. I'm a librarian, and those errant commas or badly worded sentences drive me nuts, and I suspect that you have some of that same reaction. I want to encourage you, with what time you have for this, to continue to make those kinds of edits because they really improve the readability of the articles here. As for your editing for your company, here's the scoop: you have rightfully declared your COI, and that is much appreciated. The issue with COI is not that we consider folks dishonest, but that it is hard to have a truly neutral point of view when you see Wikipedia as part of your paying job. So the two main policies around COI are transparency and peer review. The message on your user page is the main thing for transparency, and you have done that already. Thank you.
For edits to actual articles, I have a few bits of advice. One, which will benefit your employer and help Wikipedia readers, is to include ISBNs with the citations that you add or edit on articles. The ISBN must be in the form "ISBN" then a space, then the ISBN number, like ISBN 9780547577531. This is clickable, and it goes to a page that lets users look for the book in libraries and bookstores. We don't allow direct linking to sales sites, but this is the next best thing - good for everyone. The other bit of advice is that even something as simple as an author's list of books really should have references, at least wherever possible. Easy sources of references for modern books are review sites like Booklist Online, Publisher's Weekly, or Kirkus. These reviews are not enough to show that a book is important, but they are third-party proof that the book exists. Of course, if a book is given a prestigious review, such as the New York Review of Books, one would surely want to add that as a reference on the author's bibliography. Forthcoming books are a bit more difficult to source, and it could happen that the addition of an un-sourced forthcoming book will be removed by a subsequent editor. If that happens, do not despair -- add the information back when you have a source for the book.
Now for the peer review part...
I believe that you have created some pages "from scratch." If those pages are part of your COI, then please create them through the Articles for Creation process. As a registered user you are not required to use AfC, except for articles affected by your COI. When you create such an article, please place a notice on the talk page of the article stating what your interest is. This will help reviewers look for point of view problems. Once the article is in "main space" you must use the change request method that I describe next.
Adding the bibliographic data for an author's recent books is probably allowed even with a COI since it falls under "un-controversial factual updates". If you wish to make other changes to articles affected by your COI you should do so using the edit request mechanism. You can make the edit request easily by using the "edit request" function as described in the conflict of interest guideline. This is not as quick or efficient as doing it yourself, but it is what is required by the conflict of interest policy.

Thanks, LaMona., for all your help with this! I have a much better understanding now of Wikipedia's COI policies and intend to fully honor them as outlined above. I appreciate you taking the time to walk me through these guidelines. As for ISBN citation, in the past I have not added them as assiduously as I should, but instead simply followed the bibliography's pre-existing citations and format. I'll make an effort to correct this.

I don't foresee doing many more articles on behalf of the publishing company (COI) but if and when I do I'll adhere to your strong recommendation of going through the Afc process. Thanks very much. Madcloud01 (talk) 11:56, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
