Where do you find Wikipedia's polices?
[edit]This help request has been answered. If you need more help, you can , contact the responding user(s) directly on their user talk page, or consider visiting the Teahouse. |
As can be seen from my contributions, I have already edited in both the mainspace and the project space. However, I don't want to actually create an article from scratch until I know Wikipedia's polices, because otherwise I could loose it to deletion. Where (in terms of a pasge link or URL) can I find the basic policies and guidelines of Wikipedia that will prevent my work from being deleted? Ponyeo Gazabell (talk) 01:11, 27 November 2015 (UTC)
- I'll point you to three resources, of which you can choose your preference. There's Your first article, there is the Tutorial, and The Golden Rule. If and when you feel comfortable writing an article, you can use the Article Wizard to create a draft, which will be reviewed by experienced editors. If you want more help, stop by the Teahouse, Wikipedia's live help channel, or the help desk to ask someone for assistance. Primefac (talk) 02:08, 27 November 2015 (UTC)

SwisterTwister talk 04:12, 27 November 2015 (UTC)The article Shannon O'Connell (Sylvan Learning) has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this biography of a living person will be deleted unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.
If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within seven days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. reddogsix (talk) 04:18, 27 November 2015 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Shannon O'Connell (Sylvan Learning)
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Shannon O'Connell (Sylvan Learning) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, a group of people, an individual animal, an organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content, or an organized event, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. What does "View source" mean?
[edit]This help request has been answered. If you need more help, you can , contact the responding user(s) directly on their user talk page, or consider visiting the Teahouse. |
As I've been looking around, I've noticed a few articles that had a small lock symbol (of various colors) in the top right corner, and instead of the "edit" tab, there was a "View source" tab. What does this mean? Ponyeo Gazabell (talk) 02:23, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
- Hello Ponyeo. This means that the page has been Protected from editing due to a number of reasons, but generally because of vandalism of some sort, or disruption. Protection can only be added or removed by Adminstrators and a few other local and global Privileged users. Despite protection though, the
View source
link exists so you can still view the Source code of the page. There are also different types of protection you can read about at WP:PROTECT#Overview of types of protection. Hope this helped, happy editing! LorTalk 02:32, 28 November 2015 (UTC)- @Lor: Thanks. That did help. I'm assuming that the different colored locks represent the different types of protection, correct? Also, just FYI, and I will say the same to other people who contact me, you can call me Ponyeo but you don't have to - Poño is also fine. I just made my signature that way to make it easier on people. Cheers. Ponyeo Gazabell (talk) 02:40, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
- Correct, different types of locks mean different types of protection. Though the locks at the top of the screen are only Templates placed by the Protecting Administrator, so they may not be there in every case of protection. I'm glad I could help :) LorTalk 02:49, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Key Loop Highway
[edit]Hello Poño Gázabelé,
I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Key Loop Highway for deletion, because it appears to duplicate an existing Wikipedia article, [[{{{article}}}]].
If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.
You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. JamesG5 (talk) 21:51, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
- Clarifying, the page duplicates info from Seven Mile Bridge, Overseas Highway, and U.S._Route_1_in_Florida#The_Keys. There're also no tunnels, the only tunnel on US 1 in Florida is many miles north in Ft Lauderdale. I've also lived & worked in Key West and no one refers to it by that name. JamesG5 (talk) 21:55, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
- @JamesG5:: Sorry, I got that information from another online source off-Wiki, which has also been deleted for falsifying facts. Also, I'm afraid that deleting the article because of "issues" would give me a bad reputation here, so I've blanked and G7'd it instead. Ponyeo Gazabell (talk) 22:21, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
- Cool, and thanks. :-) JamesG5 (talk) 22:22, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
- The Wikipedia community isn't that unforgiving. Most new editors have created a page or two, or even more that don't conform to community standards initially. smileguy91talk - contribs 22:28, 28 November 2015 (UTC)

User page protection

Afte reading about Wikipedia's page protection policy, I'm just wondering. Is there a way to protect my user page so that only I can edit it? I mean, there is no reason for anyone else to be editing the page about me. Ponyeo Gazabell (talk) 00:51, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
- The page can be protected so that new and anonymous editors can no longer edit it (see WP:SEMI). It cannot be protected so that only you can edit it. Huon (talk) 01:23, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
- @Huon: Thanks. If you are an administrator, could you please do this? If not, please point me to where I should go to request it. Cheers. Ponyeo Gazabell (talk) 20:52, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
- I'm sorry; the information I provided was incomplete: While there is a way to protect the page from edits by new or anonymous editors, we don't do so pre-emptively. There doesn't seem to be a need to protect your userpage. Huon (talk) 22:26, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
- @Huon:: I did read somewhere on Wikipedia (I forget where, it wasn't the actual policy) that "User request within own user space" is a valid reason for protection. Ponyeo Gazabell (talk) 22:34, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
- See WP:UPROT - "user request within own userspace" is sufficient if there is a need. Huon (talk) 03:16, 3 December 2015 (UTC)

Where do you go to get community imput on a topic, and/or to propose changes to a policy or guideline? Ponyeo Gazabell (talk) 01:30, 4 December 2015 (UTC)
- The various forums at the Village Pump are often a good place to start a discussion, either the policies or the proposals subpage depending on your interests. Take a a look around at WP:VP to start. --joe deckertalk 02:06, 4 December 2015 (UTC)
