Hey Lucas,

Ja, studier' ich, werde aber gerade fertig und fange die Diss an. Hab den Artikel gemacht, um mich ein bisschen abzulenken (zeitweise zu viel). Der link war kein Bild, sondern ihre Diss in Freidok, mit der sie offensichtlich gerade fertig geworden ist (sehr zügig, die kleine...); wollte nur den Namen nicht hier posten. Ich war mit ihr in einer Klasse und in der Mittelstufe jahrelang furchtbar verknallt in sie...ist aber nix daraus geworden. Dachte, wenn Du schon im klinischen bist, und sie vielleicht jetzt Assistenzärztin ist, kennst Du sie vielleicht? Das mit den Rankings ist, gerade was Freiburg angeht, schon 'ne Unverschämtheit. Erlärt sich aber aus der Methode: Jiao Tong (ARWU) bezieht zB nur Artikel, die in Nature und Science veröffentlicht wurden (amerikanische Zeitschriften) in die Wertung mit ein. Da es in diesen Rankings immer sehr eng zugeht, ist klar, dass dadurch die englischsprachigen Länder immer besonders gut aussehen und andere Unis verdrängen. Die Times (THES) bezieht die Hälfte der Punktzahlen aus peer und employers reviews. Wo kriegen sie die Adressen her? Von Abonenten natürlich, und die sitzen natürlich hauptsächlich in englischsprachigen Ländern, oder in ehemaligen Kolonien mit einer anglophilen Oberschicht, die wohl auch meistens dort studiert hat. Heidelberg kommt noch relativ gut weg, und teilweise sogar sehr gut (weltweit 17 in Biomedizin war schon ziemlich OK), weil es halt im Ausland die bekannteste deutsche Uni ist, und bis vorm Krieg wirklich weltspitze war. Davon zehren wir teilweise noch. Aber man darf das Ganze nicht so ernst nehmen. Die meisten wissen ja, dass Rankings immer mit Vorsicht zu genießen sind, und Größen wie Qualität der Lehre sowieso nicht messbar sind. Bist Du eigentlich gerade in Maryland, oder warum der tag? na, wie läufts? Ein Ami der Allemannisch kann...faszinierend. Bist aber hier aufgewachsen, nehm' ich an? Ja, bin auch mal gespannt was aus der Exzellenzinitiative wird, glaub' aber nicht, dass das einfach so im Sande verlaufen wird, können wir uns als Nation nicht leisten. Forschung ist ja heutzutage primär 'ne Geldfage, und da lässt sich einiges machen, glaub' ich. Sicherlich werden wir nicht gleich ein deutsches Harvard auf die Beine stellen, aber Platzierungen wie in dem Ranking der Europäischen Kommission, also 4 deutsche Unis in den Euro- top ten, sollten mittelfristig möglich sein. Damit wären wir dann auch im wetweiten Maßstab gut dabei. Nach der Diss will ich noch mal für 'n' Jahr nach England und den LL.M. machen - ist heutzutage karrierenotwendig -, ja und dann wartet noch das Referendariat. Wie weit bist Du eigentlich? Ja, sagen wir top 30 sollte für 3, 4 deutsche Unis wirklich drin sein. Ich schätze wir müssen, zumindest in Naturwissenschaften, einfach konsequent in englisch publizieren. Das hieße zwar, sich einer Art Kulturimperialismus zu ergeben, aber andererseits wurde eine halbe Ewigkeit nur auf Latein publiziert, also was solls... Was die Studiengebühren betrifft, ist das ein zweischneidiges Schwert: Es steht zwar im Hochschulrahmengesetz, dass diese der Verbesserung der Lehre zugute kommen müssen; was das heißt, ist aber auslegungsbedürftig. Einige Unis nehmen diese zusätzlichen Gelder, um damit zB Baumaßnahmen zu finanzieren, deren Ermöglichung eigentlich originäre Länderaufgabe ist. Wenn dies der Fall ist, dann werden lediglich Lasten privatisiert, ohne dass der Studentenschaft irgendwelche direkten Vorteile zugute kämen. Dies kommt in meinen Augen einer zweckentfremdenden Veruntreuung recht nahe. Meines Erachtens nach sollten die zusätzlichen Einnahmen primär dafür Verwendung finden, mehr Lehrkräfte einzustellen (und damit meine ich Lehrkräfte, keine Professoren, die Aufsichtsratsmandate sammeln wie andere Leute Briefmarken und sich schon beklagen, wenn sie 6 Stunden pro Woche unterrichten müssen). Damit ließe sich auch das recht schwergewichtige staff/ student-ratio-Kriterium in den Rankings verbessern, in dem alle deutschen Unis nicht sehr gut aussehen, was sich dann wiederum recht vorteilhaft auf die Gesamtpositionierung auswirken dürfte. Zur Forschungsfinanzierung dürfen die Studiengebühren jedenfalls nicht eingesetzt werden, auch nicht im Rahmen einer Umschichtung der Mittel: das wäre ein Umgehungstatbestand. Die Exzellenzgelder fließen ja ohnehin vollständig in die Forschung und ich gehe davon aus, dass die Drittmittel aus staatlichen und privaten Forschungsaufträgen sich in den nächsten Jahren mehr auf die Elite- Unis konzentrieren werden und nicht, wie bisher, gleichmäßig auf alle Unis verteilt werden, was sicherlich noch ein Relikt des von Dir zu Recht beklagten egalitären Ansatzes ist. Das ist jedenfalls exakt die Methode, mit der die Briten es geschafft haben, ihre G 5 Unis (Oxbridge, Imperial, UCL und LSE) konstant in der Weltspitze zu positionieren: die sind nämlich mit sehr weitem Abstand die drittmittelstärksten Unis in GB, was übrigens in erster Linie, unglaublich aber wahr, aus staatlichen Forschungsaufträgen resultiert. Mit den Studiengebühren in den USA hast Du, soweit es die privaten Unis angeht, natürlich recht. Fast $50,000 sind einfach indiskutabel. Andererseits praktizieren die Ivies und die top liberal arts colleges ein "need-blind admission" Verfahren, mit der Folge dass zB in Amherst 66% der Studenten ganz oder zu einem großen Teil kostenlos studieren. Die staatlichen Unis in den Staaten haben, für in state students, eigentlich recht manierliche Preise: Berkeley zB nimmt ca. $ 12,000 (€ 8,500) p.a. für Californier, worin dann aber tuition, fees, room und board enthalten sind. Wenn Du das mal hochrechnest, kommst Du in Deutschland alles in allem nicht sehr viel günstiger weg. In England jedenfalls ist es deutlich teurer. Ich habe zwar "nur" ca. 4000 Pfund Studiengebühren bezahlt, aber dazu kamen noch gepflegte 7,500 Pfund für eine 5 qm Bude im Studentenwohnheim(!), vom Leben in London ganz zu schweigen. (4,50 Pfund für einen Macciato und so...das waren mal 12 Mark!) Aber das scheint grundsätzlich auch der Trend in Deutschland zu sein, unsere nicht-konsekutiven Master's kosten heute schon bis zu €9,000 pro Jahr, und der einjährige MBA an der Uni Mannheim kostet €17,900. Generell halte ich von diesem Trend eigentlich nicht viel, Bildung ist keine Ware, sondern ein Menschenrecht. Andererseits können die Unis das Geld ja wirklich gebrauchen und wenn der Staat das nicht als Freibrief betrachtet, seinen ureigensten Aufgaben (zB dem oben angesprochenen Hochschulbau) nicht mehr adäquat nachzukommen und so letztlich seinen Haushalt auf Kosten der Studenten zu sanieren, solls mir recht sein. Dann müsste aber das Stipendienwesen, wie in den USA vorbildlich zu beobachten, entsprechend angepasst werden. Naja...wir werden sehen was passiert. Übrigens: Ihr dürft schon während dem Studium promovieren? Kommt man da mit dem Pensum noch klar? Zu welchem Thema promovierst Du denn? Deinem Schweigen zum ursprünglichen Thema entnehme ich übrigens, dass Du von der Dame noch nie was gehört hast? Sie hat am UKL in der Abteilung für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie promoviert. Volunteer opportunity in Bethesda, Thursday, July 16

The Wikimedia Foundation will be conducting an all-day Academy at the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, Maryland, on Thursday, July 16. The team that will be teaching at the Academy, a mix of paid staff and volunteers, is looking for four more volunteers to be teaching assistants, providing one-to-one assistance in workshops whenever a workshop participant has a problem following the instructional directions. (We currently have two editors signed up as teaching assistants, and are looking for a total of six.)

The NIH editing workshops are only for two hours, but volunteers are asked to meet the Wikimedia Foundation team at the hotel in Bethesda at about 7:15 a.m. (time to be finalized shortly) and to stay for the entire day, which ends at 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided. (The full schedule can be found here.)

The team is not necessarily looking for expert editors (though they are welcome), just people who can help novices who might get stuck when trying to do some basic things. If you've been an editor for at least 3 months, and have done at least 500 edits, you probably qualify.

If you're interested, please send John Broughton an email. If you might be interested, but would like further information, please post a note on his user talk page, so that he can respond there, and others can see what was asked.
