Hi, back in april you reported a problem with a diacritic not displaying correctly in Helvetica. I have now received the following statement from Apple engineers: "We believe this issue has been addressed in the latest OS X Yosemite Developer Preview". Presumably "the source" is the book itself, which I have not seen, but Fairman is not a linguist and I don't assume a non-linguist will understand or use the distinction. By "the source", I mean the citation in the article, which is to this site, which discusses Fairman's essay. Surprisingly, the uses (or at least some of them) appear not to be quotations—I guess Fairman's essay is written in a more informal tone than you might expect for an academic work. —Granger (talk · contribs) 15:31, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

@Cirt and Mr. Granger: I see what you mean. The locus citatus is note 226, p. 33 of the article (p.34 of the PDF), bolding added:

276. Christopher M. Fairman, Fuck, 28 CARDOZO L. REV. 1711 (2007). This article was expanded into the book with the same title. FAIRMAN, supra note 261. Each work seems to be more of an excuse to use the word than to treat the issue seriously. For example, the first two words of the article-immediately after the one-word title-are "Oh fuck." Fairman, Fuck, CARDOZO L. REV. 1711, 1711. The author keeps his promise that the reader would find no "sanitized version" of the word in the article. Id. In sixty pages, he uses the word more than 560 times (not counting the table of contents and the footnotes), for an average of more than nine times per page, and has such playful subheads as "Fuck History" and "Fuck Jurisprudence." Similarly, the author begins chapter one of the book this way: "Oh fuck. Let's just get this out of the way." FAIRMAN, supra note 261, at 1. Yet, in the fifteen-page prologue, the author had used the word at least thirty-five times. Id at vii-xxii. And, the word appeared in the titles of eight of the sixteen chapters listed in the table of contents. It is unclear, therefore, what the author was attempting to "get out of the way."

Hopkins, the author of this article, seems to feel that there's a contradiction between writing a serious article about "fuck" and playing with the word. I disagree. But none of that seriously affects the immediate question. Many of these occurrences of the word are indeed uses, not mentions, though I can't (and wouldn't) do a count to see whether Hopkins knows the difference. Thnidu (talk) 20:48, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

I missed the boat on putting together an academic career ... that didn't bother me (much) until I got involved with Wikipedia 7 years ago ... now I find myself sorely needing help from linguists, and rarely get it in the normal day-to-day stuff. I'm starting to look at the second half of the article now (I haven't worked on this part before). I reverted this edit of yours ... we don't allow "see also" statements in the text, because we've found that people misuse them to imply things that they're not willing to (or can't) find sources for. It would be fine to say for instance "In (whatever year) there were three Jewish congregations in Spokane", but in general, and especially at FAC, you have to cite a source, and you have to check the source yourself. "See also" statements can be fine as section hatnotes, particularly when they support our summary style. - Dank (push to talk) 15:03, 29 November 2014 (UTC)

I saw a dead link, tried to recover it from archive.org, and wasn't able to, so I left a note to spare other editors the same waste of time. You might be right about commenting it out; that didn't occur to me. Typically I leave a note on the talk page rather than in the coding for issues like that. I posted the template here because I template regulars. It takes the emotion and wording out of play. On your suggestion though, I'll go back and add a comment. @Chris troutman: An afterthought: a good reason for putting it into an HTML comment in the code rather than on the talk page is to accommodate different styles of copyediting. One person may read or scan the entire talk page for recent developments and methodically copyedit the whole article.
