Hi!

I've been working on the german articles to this subject und just wrote the english one for Fyrkat. I have tried to make a table of the language versions here de:Benutzer:T.woelk/Wikinger. Not really pretty but at least the top eight rows or so might be of interest to you.

Being from Odense couldn't you add more dates to Nonnebakken? Something like when the nuns built their Abbey, what became of it and about the structures of the 19th century. What does the place look like today? Are there any finds in a museum? I have found different dimensions for the longhouses in Fyrkat, is there any recent publication on this in Denmark? Soon I will translate some of the Fyrkat stuff back to german and add it to the german de:Fyrkat article. How about defining a generall layout and adjusting all related articles to that. What we could use would be a generall map showing the whereabouts of all six sites as well as sketches of each layout.

And last but not least: any chance of getting a danish da:Langhus article started, with lots of info from Vorbasse? And now of to seeding more interest for this in the dutch wp ... anybody fluent enough in french to start stubs there ;-).......... T.woelk 11:06, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

Greetings.
I'm afraid I'm not the best authority on the Viking era - I study contemporary history - but I'll put it on my to-do list: I should be able to dig up a few more details on Nonnebakken. I've never heard of any good finds from it. If they exist, they must be in located in either Møntergården (a local museum) or in the national museum in Copenhagen. I honestly can't remember the display in Møntergården, since must have been 15 years since I visited last time. The problem is pretty much that the site was mostly destroyed when the Masons' lodge was constructed (the workmen probably didn't have a clue about what they were digging through.) Unfortunately, I'm pretty busy for the next week or so, so it'll have to wait a bit. But this material should definitely be improved. I've just glanced your article on Fyrkat, and it looks like a good piece of work :) One of my friends loves using his camera, so I might be able to persuade him to take a few shots of the area.
I did a little search of the local university's collection and two books might be of interest to you:
Kronborg Christensen, John, "Vikingetidens langhuse på Trelleborg, Aggersborg, Fyrkat og Nonnebakken", København:Kunstakademiets Arkitektskole, 1973 (83 pages) and
Thrane, Henrik: "Nonnebakken. Odenses forsvundne vikingeborg", 3rd revised ed., Odense: Fyens Stiftsmuseum, 1987 (28 pages). I'll try to find a copy of both of them. Regards. Valentinian (talk) 19:05, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

Cuba

Hi,

I am sending this message to editors I know who have done work on articles related to communism.

Adam Carr recently started bringing the Cuba article up to standard, gradually rewriting each section. In the meantime, his work has been resisted for several weeks by a group of Castro supporters who dispute, among other things, that the fact that Cuba is not a democracy. Adam Carr is now at a conference for a couple of weeks, meaning his work will likely be undone. If you have the time and the interest, please take a look.

Best regards. 172 | Talk 05:25, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Stub template coding

If {{Panama-stub}} is a representative sample, I see nothing wrong with the coding of your stub templates. I noticed that you're removing template top-sorting from some others, though (with <noinclude>| </noinclude>). Any particular reason for that? I'm not aware of any issues with that particular trick... Alai 02:04, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

The advantage of top-sorting is that... it's sorted to the top? :) It just seems slightly preferable to avoid having the template mixed in with the articles, especially for multi-page listings. I certainly disagree with the use of includeonly to hide the template within the category, though. Alai 02:18, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Zalissia and Yasenivtsi

Hello! I am seeking detailed information on the history of the villages of Ясенівці and Залісся (Золочівський район, Lviv 'oblast'). They may be in English, Polish, Ukrainian or Russian. Zalissia was called Zalesie in Polish. Yasenivtsi (also spelled Yasenovtsy, Jasenivci) was spelled Jasienowce, Jasieniowce and Jasionowce in Polish. The only information I've got come from Slownik Geograficzny Krolestwa Polskiego 1880-1902 and Księga Adresowa Polski(=Poland Business Directories) of the years 1891,1926-1930 - there are some population data and some surnames. I have placed these information at uk.wikipedia.org (Залісся, Ясенівці). So far, the largest source on them is there... I would be grateful if you could help me and provide me with some additional information on the history of these villages. These may be some Ukrainian encyclopedias/glossaries/guide-books entries. Word or scanned documents. I am willing to help you in the things you are interested in... I may look up some information for you. Have a nice day! --Riva72 21:33, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

I'm afraid that's out of my reach. I don't have access to that kind of detail information. Best of luck with the search, though. Valentinian (talk) 21:36, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

I took out the Montenegro-bio-stub for Stefan Uroš I, adding the following summary: "Montenegro stub removed. Article doesn't say he had anything to do with Montenegro". AWB, categories and stubs

...We both have the same observation, that the standard order is stubs-then-categories, and it would be great if AWD used the same order...

Thanks for your message, Valentinian. What I think is needed is some more say in which of the "general fixes" AWB applies – of which this categories-stubs/stubs-categories order is one – rather than the "all or none" presently offered. Ironically, I'm starting to think the categories-then-stubs order currently applied by AWB (and presumably Martin's preference, without Wikipedia consensus...?) may be preferable – despite the other appearing to be the norm – but I believe AWB needs to offer a choice, unless one of these orders is or becomes policy. I'm intending to post an inquiry at sourceforge.net about making AWB's "general fixes" more configurable; currently, though, I'm a little inundated. (I'd also love to see AWB made available on other wiki, in particular the Commons.)  Best wishes, David Kernow 01:34, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Survey on the use of Latinized/Greek names for Byzantine rulers

Hi. There is a survey on the names of Byzantine rulers at Talk:Constantine XI. Maybe you are interested in.--Panairjdde 17:49, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for telling me. I've already voted. Valentinian (talk) 23:51, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
You wrote "I don't believe I was talking down to you, so kindly abstain from doing so towards me." This is an attack you should prove. I never talked down to you, so kindly remove this statement.--Panairjdde 09:54, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
I was referring to the dog example. Making comparisons to the Latin word for "dog" was - in my mind - completely irrelevant to the discussion at hand. I could only read that comparison as you considering the standards preferred by byzantinists / historians as irrelevant if Wikipedia does not insist on relying solely on the Latin names for e.g. animals and plants as well, since these are preferred by biologists. I read this as an attack on / disregard for my profession. If this was not the intented meaning of your post, we must have interpreted it differently. A comparison with e.g. Columbus is very relevant to the discussion, and I have no problem with such examples. As I read your posts, you base your argument on a claim that the Latinized names are household words or at least widely used in modern English. The recent publications I have read use a different standard and I disagree with the analysis. I am quite convinced that the name of an average Byzantine emperor is completely obscure to more than 99% of the general public - I would be absolutely delighted if knowledge about the era was more widespread but alas, this is not the case. Both the general public and a large number of professional historians are quite pleased with consigning knowledge about the Byzantine Empire to the dustbin of history. Since knowledge about the era is not more widespread, I see no reason not to use the forms currently used by scholars. Names like Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Christopher Columbus, Alexander the Great, and Aristotle are entrenched in European culture, and these names have taken precedence over all other options. This level of fame is not bestowed on the average long-dead Byzantine Emperor. My preference is - as said before - to always let the most recent scholarship take precedence, and - in this case - this includes the ODB forms. You are very welcome to disagree with this analysis and to prefer Latinized names, but I prefer to use new information and updated standards whenever possible. I consider the Latinized names to be nothing more as leftovers from an abandoned scholarly tradition. Valentinian (talk) 23:21, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

It should probably redirect to Occupation of Denmark, at least for now. Since The Fogh article does not have a link to Occupation of Denmark, keeping the link to the Danish collaboration policy which redirects to Occupation of Denmark seems good to me. Thue | talk 12:04, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Belarus

Sorry for bothering but I felt I had to ask. You are from Denmanrk and you call to "support repressed people of Belarus." Have you ever been to Belarus or have you even met a single person from there? I've been there repeatedly, I happen to know over a dozen Belorussins and none of them feel repessed. I realize that's your opinion and you are free to express it, but I'm wondering whether you're basing it on the right sources. The Wikipedia article on Belarus doesn't, for instance, mention repression in Belarus as a fact. NapoleonIII 20:02, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

South African Politician Stub

Hi - I note your interest in this stub. However, by putting Nelson Mandela as the image, one feels that it is not representative of the entire political structure of South Africa. Imagine putting a picture of Tony Blair for the British government! I would like your input regarding a potential change, or alternatively making Mr Mandela less prominent (after all, would you put US and Soviet flags for an "nuclear weapons" stub?). Stubs and such

Thanks for the info. I was just trying to correct my previous mistake, but i guess i just made another. I'd like your take on this

I've been 'bugged' by my hot button issue of the default skin hiding categories from the user for around two months, and this related thing punched the button pretty much dead center as the same point has been nagging at me as is made by the originator. Seems to me a VP listing ought be made on both, as it were, by at least a mention 'synopsis' with link, and the common debate on kept this page. This seems preferable, as both VP:Technical and VP:policy are certainly apropo venues for a link posting, and I think we've all seen some of the bad effects of the current trend. This point made by the originator is sparse, but on point and imho, important. By keeping the discussion there, it can be similarly referenced on other BB's (Meta for one), and there are a few others. I'm much too focused on wikiEditing to keep up with all the discussion forums, so where should it go, should it be given a seperate venue (Yet another 'proposed guideline'!), or what? In sum, seems to me the 'Internal links' section with such a category template would solve both problems with minimal edit dislocation.

My confidence is high that a structural problem in presentation is present under current standards (editorial guidelines), but my crystal ball shattered some years back <g>, so I can't measure it's severity there and it's hard to gauge it's exact magnitude using anything but inductive reasoning. Personally, I rarely visit the nether regions of a web-page, and admittedly tend to attribute that to other 'oldsters' as well. I guess the key question is: If one is reading casually, what reason have they, 'our customer-readers' for looking lower down past the references? Advice? Best regards! // FrankB 15:59, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Hello again. The .png and .gif images for the flags of Hong Kong and Macao were there until user:SchmuckyTheCat replaced them. I don't object replacing them with .svg images, but they should be kept until the inaccuracies with the .svg images are fixed. Moved (as you've noticed). In this case no actual admin action was really required (aside from whether the redirect should be deleted, which is more to do with bot-effort to replace the template uses). Template : Multi-stub

Hi. I have a question: You sadad that tens of thousands of stub articles are double-stubbed. Many thousands are also triple-stubbed - I would like to know, from what you make what estimate? (Let me point, so there be no misunderstood, that there is a diffrence between double-categories, and double-stubed) Egon 18:47, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Replied on your talk page. Valentinian (talk) 19:02, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Well, any article whith more than one stub can be of two kind:

  1. it has an exotic combinations of stubs (let say "military", and "fashion")
  2. it has an combinations of stubs which are very common (lots of "biography" + something)

Now I understand that '1' point isn't the problem. And for the secound, I think that it can be some Bot runing which will estimate the most often combination of categories, to propose them for a new stub. Kiping the example you thrown: If we Bot would find many entries like: {{Multi-stub|||Poland|politic|biography|mildle east}} it will propose to create the new stub for these categories. I think if such a Bot will run from the begining of existing of Multi-stub, then nombers of articles using this stub shouldn't that large. But, than again, i might be wrong. I know that then we talk about English Wikipedia it is much more articles to manage. Egon 19:28, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Ecuadorian flag

Hello Valentinian. First of all, thanks for the message. The information posted on Flags of the World is not very good, beginning with the bits of historical information that appear there. The Ecuadorian State flag has clear indications for the width of the three colors on the flag, but to the best of my knowledge there are no specific regulations regarding total width to length ratio. I believe this is also true for the Colombian State flag. What sets them apart is not the size of the flag (we all use a 2:3 ratio generally) but the national coat of arms, which is absent in the Colombian State flag. The Venezuelan flag is an entirely different matter, as the three horizontal bands have all the same width. On the other hand, I haven't heard anything about we having a "civilian flag", ever. Still, you have left me wondering about this ratio thing...I will look into this matter (I'm Ecuadorian, and I live in Ecuador) and will come back to you with a definitive answer as soon as possible. Best Regards. Andrés C. 04:38, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Ok. Went to the library and read the Legislative Decree of November 7, 1900, as well as other documents related to our national flag. Article 2 of the Decree, which is what we read here on the Ecuadorian government web site, only indicates that the yellow strip has two times the width of the blue and red strips. But that's about it. No specifics about ratios. The other articles indicate that the flag to be hoisted in government buildings, embassies and consulates in foreign nations, and military instalations, must include the CoA; that the municipal buildings must use stars for the number of provinces in the country instead of the CoA (that one, I have never seen anywhere in Ecuador, and probably was used seldom, if ever); and finally, that flags to be used by private citizens must be like the one indicated on article 2 (that is, without the CoA). So I guess that's what people talk about when they refer to a "civilian flag". My conclusion and my recommendation: lacking official specifications, let us use an image with a standard 2:3 ratio (like most countries around the world and, I suppose, like most flags here on Wikipedia) instead of the somewhat awkward 1:2 version. Even the Encyclopedia Britannica states here that our flag ratio is 1:2, but there is no basis whatsoever for that particular assertion. Regards (and excuse me for having taken up so much space on your talk page). Andrés C. 22:42, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi Valentinian. Regarding your question about the year 1860, a little bit of history (I hope you don't mind). In 1830, the lands that constitute present-day Ecuador seceded from the Greater Colombia -to which they belonged since 1822, after the independence from Spain- to set up a new nation-state. Still, the leaders of the fledling Republic of Ecuador decided to keep the old Colombian flag (that is, the yellow-blue-red pattern you see today). This flag remained unchanged until 1845, when a revolutionary movement from Guayaquil toppled the government in Quito (very unpopular at the time, and run by a cliqué of Venezuelan-born officers from the time of the Wars of Independence) and took control of the State. The new Government, bent on eliminating all signs of Colombian or Venezuelan influence, adopted a new flag for the country. It had a vertically striped white-blue-white pattern, with stars in the middle. This was our flag until 1859-1860, when disaster struck. In 1859, a civil war broke out and the country descended into utter chaos. Besides the central government in Quito, there were three other rebel governments in different parts of the country. To top things off, the Colombians and Peruvians began to consider dividing up the country between them. A Peruvian expeditionary force came in and landed in Guayaquil, where it was welcomed by the local rebel leader, Guillermo Franco. To make a long story short, the Government forces from Quito, headed by President Gabriel Garcia Moreno, eventually came down to Guayaquil, defeated Franco's forces, and made a peace treaty with the Peruvians, who left Guayaquil and sailed back to Peru. After defeating all rebel forces and regaining full control of the country, Garcia Moreno dismissed the 1845 flag and in 1860 decreed the return of the yellow-blue-red pattern, which was finally adopted as the official flag of Ecuador in 1900.
As for living between mountains, you'd be surprised. Though a small country, Ecuador is actually made up of three very different regions: the western lowlands (along the Pacific coast) the central highlands (the Andean region), and the Oriente, which is all jungle (part of the Amazonian basin), plus the Galapagos Islands . I live in Guayaquil, a port city located in the western lowlands (pop. 3,000,000 plus, the biggest city in Ecuador, and the nation's economic capital...click here for a quick glance, you won't be dissapointed!) So no mountains around here; all humid, tropical and flat, with many beautiful beaches along the Pacific coast, not very far from the city. Mountains? What mountains? :) Andrés C. 04:47, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Yes, we have some pretty high volcanoes in the Andes region. I was just kidding, pointing to the fact that around Guayaquil (the Guayas river basin) the land is as flat as Denmark. You're right of course, we're bigger than Dinamarca, but rather small by South American standards. I've heard Copenhagen is a beautiful city. Sadly my knowledge about your country is limited to the facts that it is one of those tiny, beautiful northern European nations where things seem to be running always perfectly (at least to the eyes of far-away foreigners). My Denmark history does not go beyond the issue you had with your southern neighbors over Schleswig-Holstein. Hey, nice talking to you! Andrés C. 13:16, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Halych mess

Valentinian, you have been moving George I of Halych earlier, at least twice, to location which is the one you desire, but you have done those moves without any discussion. You are not entitled to claim the location you chose anuy better than location chosen by others. Please cease from sending overreacting warnings. Maed 13:19, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Stop attacking me! Your talk page is full of around 10 messages about your desire to move pages without consensus. For your information: 1) my last edit was a revert of a move I consider to be very close to vandalism, and Wikipedia rules state that the best known name in English is to be used. George of Halycz has 0 hits on Google. 2) When I edited the material long ago, I moved two pages in order to fix a lot of broken links back then. The links about the same persons were in both Ukrainian, Polish, Belarusian and Lithuanian. The names I chose were in tune with the great majority however, which is Ukrainian. 3) I actually received a very positive message from a Polish editor after I'd fixed that mess, and the result has been left intact in months, so it seems to have been a good choice. I've said enough. Valentinian (talk) 18:19, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Niger and other stub readiness?

If I understand it correctly, it is time to create the stubs for the countries you listed, such as Swaziland and Niger? Or should we continue waiting?--Thomas.macmillan 03:52, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, I misunderstood the first time. I suppose its public domain. The original version which was used to draw the SVG was public domain, and I usually upload images I create as public domain. Is that what you're looking for? - Рэдхот 08:22, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Byzantine names: suggested moratorium

On Talk:List of Byzantine Emperors I've suggested a limited moratorium because I don't think the current discussion is leading to, or can lead to, consensus. I hope you'll vote, for or against! Best wishes Andrew Dalby 13:17, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi! I think it was your recent edit that caused the template to show up as an item in the Category:People stubs. I do a bit of editing to keep that area clear by assigning more specific stubs. Do you want to take a look at it? I would rv. to an older version but I'm sure your edit was intended to do something of which i'm not aware. Thanks and "cheers!". Stormbay 21:36, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
