Marking of English sources

About Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, I put en icons back, altough I realise that links are assumed to be in English, if not specified otherwise, there are some reasons why these should be marked anyway. It is easier to browse references when sources are in several languages, it even may be confusing sometimes if some sources specify language, while others don't. Sometimes the source can acctualy be bilingual or gives an option to swich languages, but the texts in different languages may differ, specificaly in this case president.lv, which could prove to be good source, is such a website, it may not occur to some people that if they swich languages they might miss something, if it is not specified that references is English ---- Xil/talk 12:55, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Re: Page Moves

Hi! But here is the same issue as commented on currently Roma people article. The Finnish Kale do not name themselves Roma, only Romani. This if considering the affiliation as a branch to the Romani ethnicity. But if the article is about them, well, they are Kale, the same as the Welsh or the Iberian. Baltic communist parties

Hi. Could you chip in at Talk:Communist Party of Estonia (1990). My understanding has been that the pro-soviet minorities in the Baltic communist parties broke away and formed parallel parties with the '(on CPSU platform)' attached to their name. Old Matvey has been updated and the same article (with your photo) added to the RU vikipedia. The disscusion page on the RU site is quite interesting, with a "KW" arguing that it is pure propaganda. I would have guessed that both Matvey and Kosmodamianskaya have large doses of propaganda in their stories. Perhaps I'll ask KW for a citation for the prop charge. Vends

Hi Zalktis, could you please check this out: Vends. Do you know if its serious, is there a connection between some tribe living in medieval Latvia-Livonia and that the name Wenden Cēsis is derived from it or is it a complete hoax and or another mixup with Wends and Vistula Veneti like it seems to be? This is not a hoax. The Vends are mentioned in the mediaeval chronicles, and they are the source of the name Wenden for Cēsis. However, the reputable Latvian scholarship on the subject (e.g. mediaevalist Indriķis Šterns), follow the line that they were originally a tribe of Livs from the Venta River valley. The association with the Slavic Wends is a mistake typical of 19th-century antiquarian historians. —Zalktis (talk) 15:36, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

According to the latest and to date most comprehensive dictionary of Swedish Scandoromani (Ordbok över svensk romani, 2008, ISBN 9789189196438), "tavring" is a Scandoromani endonym used by the Scandinavian Travellers, particularly when referring to those who are more observant of the old ways and traditions. The word literally means a wire-maker, from the Scandoromani root "tav" 'wire', 'thread' (cf. Baltic Romani "thav" 'thread'). In the 19th century, wire-making was an important cottage industry in the Småland area of Sweden, where many of the Travellers lived at that time (and still do today). Some Travellers were also sentenced to work in wire-works run by the local authorities as punishment for minor crimes and misdemeanours. "Tavring" (pl. "tavringar" or "tavringer") also appears as an endonym in the Swedish Scandoromani dictionary complied by a major Traveeler NGO, Föreningen Resandefolkets Riksorganisation (FRFRO), and in this Norwegian Scandoromani glossary. The alternate endings for the plural form stem from differences in the Swedish and Norwegian dialects of Scandoromani, which have adapted to the usages in the majority language. —Zalktis (talk) 14:39, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Aizsargis

Would you describe Aizsargis as a "nationalist militia" or a "home guard" or as something else? I tried to find a translation, but nothing seems to quite fit. Jelgava massacre presents the issue, but it is likely a cross-article question.Mtsmallwood (talk) 04:14, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

In Latvian, aizsargs means literally 'defender', cf. the use of "aizsargs" to describe a defenceman in sports such as ice hockey, soccer, and basketball. Anyhow, the best translation for Aizsargi in this context, in my opinion, would be Home Guard.

The Aizsargi were initially created in 1919 during the Latvian War of Independence as a militia to support the fledgeling Latvian National Army. During the 1920s, they were subordinated to the Ministry of Defence, and acted as both a military reserve, and occasionally assisted the constabulary in policing rural districts. This is very similar to the Zemessardze today. Nationalism was widespread amongst Aizsargi, but not necessarily dominant at this time—formally, the Aizsargi was still apolitical, like other branches of the armed forces. However, because many of the Aizsargi members were drawn from the Latvian rural middle class and elites, a significant number of them supported the 1934 coup by Kārlis Ulmanis, whom they felt would support their interests. After the establishment of the authoritarian regime, Ulmanis transferred the Aizsargi organisation from the Ministry of Defence to the Ministry of Social Affairs, a kind of propaganda ministry, if you like. Its paramilitary functions were supplemented by a range of social and cultural functions; in many senses the Aizsargi became during this period the closest equivalent of a "state-bearing party" in Latvia, with both a youth and a women's wing. Aizsargi Halls in many rural communities became the focal points of social and cultural life. However, the Aizsargi remained a full-time job for only a very few. When the Soviets took over Latvia in 1940, they disarmed and forcibly dissolved the Aizsargi organisation; many Aizsargi members were arrested and deported as "hostile elements" (although the fact that many of them were well-off elites was also a contributing factor to their persecution). Some of the charges stemmed from having fought against the Red Army in the War of Independence in 1919.

In the run-up to the mass deportations in June 1941, many former Aizsargi members fled to the woods to avoid capture by the NKVD. Here they recovered weapons that they had hidden previously (during the disarmament and dissolution of the organisation), so that when the Germans invaded, they were in a position to take up the guerilla struggle against the retreating Soviets. This is why so many of the nationalist partisans in rural areas of Latvia are referred to as "Aizsargi" -- because many of them had been before. Nevertheless, is is not entirely correct to conflate the German sponsored Selbstschutz auxiliaries with the Aizsargi outright, as a good number of the young men who joined the Selbstschutz in 1941 had never been members of the Aizsargi prior to 1940.

Further complicating things is that the "C Group" Schutzmannschaften, which were often reserve police auxiliaries in rural areas, called up by the Germans as needed, are also often referred to as being "Aizsargi". This is because they not only fulfilled much of the same functions as the Aizsargi had with regards to rural policing, and often there was a continuity of personnel. However, the were only called Aizsargi colloquially; officially they were Schuma. The Germans did try to revive the Aizsargi organisation formally in 1944 using "C" group Schuma, as part of a desperate attempt to levy popular support for defence against the incoming Soviet forces. This attempt failed, partly due to the fact that the Red Army advanced too quickly, and partly because General Kurelis, head of the Riga Aizsargi detachment, threw in his lot with the Latvian Central Council resistance movement. The SD was forced to crush Kurelis's group in the forests of Kurzeme in autumn 1944.

In Soviet historiography, the pre-war organisation, the 1941 guerillas, the Selbstschutz, the C Schuma, and Kurelis's men are all generally treated as constituting the same, continuously existing "fascist organisation" of Aizsargi. The Holocaust survivor memoir literature regarding Latvia is also at times imprecise, for example, calling members of the Selbstschutz in 1941 "Aizsargi".

I hope this clarifies things somewhat. As I said, "Home Guard" would be my best suggestion for the translation; however, I would stress that in articles referring to the Holocaust in 1941, that it be stressed that they were "members of the former Aizsargi organisation", instead of simply calling them "Aizsargi", which would give the spurious impression of organisational continuity with the pre-1940 formation. —Zalktis (talk) 07:22, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
