instantchess.com advertising?[edit]

Somehow I feel there is more information on this article then I need to know, but don't really know what is against wikipedia's policies etc, so someone out there might want to fix it (if necessary?) 87.67.30.200 (talk) 00:05, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The relevant guidelines are in WP:EL and WP:ADVERT. It helps if you link the article title in your question, like this: InstantChess.com, so helpers can look it up more easily. It turns out the title you wrote in your question isn't quite right, because titles are case-sensitive on Wikipedia, and linking the title is one way to catch this when you preview your question. --Teratornis (talk) 06:00, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The article even has a price list of their services????? Mjpresson (talk) 15:50, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A large amout of material was added by User:Dmitry talanto a few days ago. With the same name as the site's owner, I believe this user has a clear conflict of interest. I have reverted the article to a previous version before Mr Talanto started editing. Astronaut (talk) 16:24, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

80/20 Thinking[edit]

am having trouble linking my references in the article with the references at the bottom of page - i have activated my references so they now lead to a URL but that has just changed them to numbers - are these valid as references for the article? I have a message saying the article needs more references, but I don't know if the current ones are OK or not....

THANK YOU —Preceding unsigned comment added by THD001UKBIS (talkcontribs) 00:10, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I did some tidying up and fixed the ref formatting. I also moved the article to drop the "Limited" per naming conventions. – ukexpat (talk) 01:02, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Changing title name[edit]

I have just create a page. All the content is OK, But I have just realize that I have mispelled one leter in the page title!!! I have read help suggesting to redirect the page to the other name, but it is much more proper to change the title to the correctt one... Can anybody help? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gyv (talkcontribs) 00:52, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You move the page: seeWP:FAQ#NAME. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 00:59, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You must have a 4-day-old account to be able to use the move function. If you don't, please tell the name of the article and the title you want and we'll help moving it for you. :) --PeaceNT (talk) 01:01, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I looked at your contributions and moved Maruxa vilalta to Maruxa Vilalta. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:32, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very Much. Thats all I needed. I apretiate very much your help. Regards —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gyv (talkcontribs) 01:37, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Style guide for former country[edit]

For someone born in the former East Germany, should it say the city plus "East Germany" or "German Democratic Republic" or just "Germany" as it seems to for many articles? And for those born in Berlin, should it say Berlin or East Berlin? The global perspective, including that of former East Germans, would indicate "Berlin, German Democratic Republic (now Berlin, Germany)", but I can't find a style guide reference for this. Thanks. --76.113.150.171 (talk) 11:36, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

When the Manual of style has no relevant guideline, the next logical place to look is in the relevant WikiProject, in this case Wikipedia:WikiProject Germany. You might also look on the German Wikipedia to see how they handle this case. It's somewhat unlikely that any of the Help desk volunteers who happen to be watching at the moment will know the answer to this fairly specialized question. If you don't get a good answer here, you could ask again on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Germany. --Teratornis (talk) 17:15, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
We can search the WikiProject Germany's archived talk pages with {{Google custom}}:
That finds some results which may be relevant, such as Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Germany/Conventions. Note to self: we really need to figure out how to edit the {{archives}} template so it automatically provides a search link on an archive set. --Teratornis (talk) 17:29, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Funny coding[edit]

While working on United States micropolitan areas, I discovered that there's some odd feature with the titles of some of them. How is there possibly a difference between Mankato-North Mankato, MN µSA and Mankato-North Mankato, MN μSA? Nevertheless, there's some sort of difference, because when I uploaded a map to Commons that linked to one of them, it sent me to a nonexistent page, as only the "other" title existed. Nyttend (talk) 14:58, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

µ is different from μ, but I can't work it out beyond that. Algebraist 15:12, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
They have different Unicode numbers. Your links lead to different redirect pages created at different times (see their history):
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mankato-North_Mankato%2C_MN_%C2%B5SA&redirect=no
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mankato-North_Mankato%2C_MN_%CE%BCSA&redirect=no
They redirect to the same target. I'm no expert but I found [1] which says:
The problem seems to be that the "=CE=BC" produced by switching to the Greek keyboard corresponds to a different Unicode slot from the "=C2=B5" produced by typing Alt-M on a French or English keyboard.
PrimeHunter (talk) 15:35, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
From Mu (letter)#Computing: In Unicode, "the micro sign or micron is considered a distinct character from the Greek alphabet letter by Unicode for historical reasons (although it is a homoglyph)" --h2g2bob (talk) 15:48, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So one of these characters is a letter, while the other is simply a set of curved lines that happens to be shaped exactly like the letter? Nyttend (talk) 15:50, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
They have different semantic meanings. µ is listed under the Unicode section for "general punctuation" as the "micro sign", and μ is listed in the Greek alphabet section as "Greek small letter mu". They just happen to be rendered the same way in many fonts. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:06, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, more examples like this are Ω (Greek capital letter omega) vs. Ω (Ohm sign, listed under "letterlike symbols) and perhaps Σ (Greek capital letter sigma) vs. ∑ (N-ary summation, listed under "mathematical operators"). — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:22, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Grr, why can't they just use one sign for both meanings? Thanks for the explanation; at least I know what to watch out for with these micropolitan areas now. Nyttend (talk) 16:28, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
My guess is that the Unicode designers wanted some of those characters available in fonts that otherwise wouldn't include the Greek subrange. As for your micropolitan areas, I suspect you'll want to stick exclusively with the micron character for your redirects and speedy delete the one that use the Greek character. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:36, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
According to User:Buaidh/Contributions#Redirects created, there appear to be several hundred of these redirects with the Greek mu instead of the micron character. A bot might be needed to correct this problem. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 20:26, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion for new page[edit]

I recently encountered a new mathematical animal called a 'double group,' which does not have a page on wikipedia. I do not have an account (and don't contribute enough to warrant one), I just wanted to let someone more powerful in the wiki-tree know that this is missing and should be added. Google yielded the following page, which contains the definition of 'double group.'

Speedy deletes[edit]

Why aren't speedy deletes of images very speedy at all? If a copyrighted image has a speedy delete tag put on it, the image doesn't get deleted for 7 days. Meanwhile, text can get deleted much faster. I'm just curious. Dismas|(talk) 17:47, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's about the administrators really. Images that are speedy-able are no different to articles. However, we have many fewer admins working in images than we do at the page section of CSD, so they are often left in there a lot longer. If the image doesn't contain a source, etc, then it's given a week or two to be modified. The backlog at WP:PUI is enormous, however. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 17:51, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Speedy Deletion means it doesn't go through a XfD discussion. 7 Days gives the uploader a chance to put things right. StewieGriffin! • Talk Sign Listen 18:16, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Speedy Deletion also means that an administrator can delete the article or image on sight, if he/she sees fit. Proposed Deletion is similar, but has a mandatory five-day wait period. JIP | Talk 18:27, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Retrieved from WP:CSD: ...In this context, "speedy" refers to the simple decision-making process, not the length of time since the article was created.Mizu onna sango15Hello! 18:50, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The colours go the wrong way. I would associate orange with hot and grey with cold. What template produced this table, so I could use it to fix the problem? JIP | Talk 18:25, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Have my Article creating priviliedges been suspended?[edit]

I happened to notice huge glaring mistakes on several articles about Ancient Rome. I am being very bold with sweeping changes to some articles by splitting them. Curia Julia was split inti 3 articles that I am researching and editing. The added articles are the Curia Hostilia and the Curia Cornelia. I also decided to split the page Rostra. There are several "rostra" that existed in the forum. I have expanded the article to the point that it may be ready to be split to discuss the individual Ancient Roman Structures, however the article as it was when I found it was very inaccurate. If I have to request a page be created...I see no further reason to put all my time, effort and creativity editing articles, working on map illustrations or my current project of Photoshoping an original work because I cannot find a free image.

Suddenly I cannot creat new pages but have not been notified of any action being taken towards me.--Amadscientist (talk) 20:12, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure? You are not blocked. Are you using a ToR network? Sometimes that can result in Autoconfirmed status being lost. PeterSymonds (talk) 20:15, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
But then non-autoconfirmed users can create pages too. I'm sorry, I can't give you an answer here. PeterSymonds (talk) 20:18, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What happens when you try to create a page and what is the page name? Some page names are protected against creation so only administrators can create them. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:37, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Somebody somewhere did something.....*BIG SMILE*. Either that, or the Roman God's are on my side. LOL! I can make pages again. I am not making any at the moment but I will have to create more as I get this research completed. Thanks for looking into it guys!--Amadscientist (talk) 21:44, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome, glad it got resolved. :) PeterSymonds (talk) 21:45, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New heart surgery procedure[edit]

A female doctor from Michigan devised and conducted a new heart repair surgical procedure (along with a team of other surgeons) on a man about 26 years old who resided in San Diego. The surgery was performed sometime in November 2007. It was even rumored that the new procedure might be named after her. Does anyone out there know the name of this doctor and the name and/or type of procedure she performed?

I think this should be at the Help desk. Best of luck finding an answer there. —Mizu onna sango15Hello! 20:36, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Did you mean reference desk? :) PeterSymonds (talk) 20:39, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, <lol> I just realised I said 'help desk' instead of the reference desk. Anyway, that's where you want to be, 71.191. —Mizu onna sango15Hello! 20:41, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
One can always try {{Google}}:
Neither search seems to find anything relevant in the first few results. You could try other keywords. If you can remember where you heard about this event, or the name of the hospital or university involved, that could help narrow your search. --Teratornis (talk) 03:34, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

disappearing edits[edit]

After logging in , and editing some articles. When i log out, and clear the cache, the changes that I have made disappear. The reappear after I login again. How is this so ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by IvanShim (talkcontribs) 20:52, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

LOL! That's because you browser is still showing the old page with cookies. So when you make an edit and hit "Save Page" you see the changes because you are on the changed or new page at that moment. When you return to the page as a bookmark you are seeing the "Old" page from those cookies. When you log out and log in (if you have cleared your cache) then you are seeing the edited page. SOmetimes, you may still have to hit "re-load". It's all in your browser. Everyone else who goes to the page sees your changes instantly as you make them.--Amadscientist (talk) 21:50, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
IvanShim already cleared the cache according to the post. You may have to purge the page while logged out to see the current version. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:02, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
