I am extremely anxious to see what happens here. But, there's little participation since thew last two re-listings. Can you help by taking a look and participating? Aditya(talkcontribs) 01:14, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Tracks and Lines "song"

[edit]

The song "Tracks and Lines" is by Eric Clapton and appeared in the movie "Rush" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:281:C700:8B99:5853:91E2:516F:C44D (talk) 07:34, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it did. That's the 1991 movie, not the 2013 James Hunt vs Niki Lauda Formula One film. What is your question please? Eagleash (talk) 11:55, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Help on Template:Cite magazine

[edit]

I was planning on using a reference relating to a magazine, but the magazine reference number which is "74470 12797" with two 0's between the number with 1 0 at the top. Can someone please tell me what's going wrong? The barcode on the front cover of American Cinematographer; but where is the number Im looking for? Can someone please construct a template in which I can use? Many thanks --Bartallen2 (talk) 11:19, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Which parameter in the template you want to use? barcode is not equal to ISSN. Matthew_hk tc 11:22, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Note Previously asked at Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2017 November 9#Help on Template:Cite magazine. Eagleash (talk) 12:29, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If you cannot supply all the information just use the parameters you can. As long as you have the magazine name, issue date, title and page No. that should suffice. The ISSN is useful but not absolutely essential per WP:ISSNs. Eagleash (talk) 12:29, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Unless there is a namesake of American Cinematographer (or export version/ online ver. have different issn), may be just c&p the issn value in the wiki article, and fill |work=, |date=, |issue= |page= from the front cover and which page the article was located. With the latter parameters, even without |issn= is sufficient. Matthew_hk tc 12:47, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Well I'm planning on using the American Cinematographer October 1, 2017 magazine references from Pages 46-55; so can I use an individual reference link for each page on an article? But I'm just curious which template I may use, can someone please give me an example? Many thanks to everyone!--Bartallen2 (talk) 14:56, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Bullet points in Infobox Scientist Template

[edit]

Hello,

I'm working on an infobox for a scientist in the Irish Language version of Wikipedia and I'm having some problems with bullets. I'd like to make sure they work, but at the moment I'm getting a funny formatting glitch where the first point is a * and the subsequent points are normal bullets. I'd like to make them all consistent and whilst I could drill down into the html to sort it out, I wondered if anyone had any ideas how to make it work better using the source editor? An example of the issue is here: https://ga.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ir%C3%A8ne_Joliot-Curie.

Thank you very much! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eolaíocht (talkcontribs) 12:59, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Eolaíocht: An asterisk must normally be at the start of a line in the generated wikitext to start a bulleted list. It's not enough that it's at the start of a line in a template call if the template doesn't return it at the start of a line. But there is an exception mentioned at the first bullet at Help:Template#Problems and workarounds. You could use this and for example replace {{{réimsí}}} by {{#if:1|{{{réimsí}}}}}, where #if is an arbitrarily chosen parser function to get the mentioned exception. It must be repeated for each parameter potentially being bulleted. It's not elegant but the best I could come up with. It would be simpler to insert a newline before {{{réimsí}}} in the template but then the value moves down a little in the infobox if it's not bulleted. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:04, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Eolaiocht. The first thing to say is that each language Wikipedia is entirely separate, not only in its rules, governance etc, but also in its templates (and sometimes, in the particular extensions to the software that those templates may use). So, you are not in fact using {{infobox scientist}}, but ga:Teimpléad:Bosca Sonraí Eolaí, which might happen to have been created as a translation of the enwiki template, but might be a completely independent creation, with different arguments and implementation. So asking on the English Help Desk may not get any useful replies. I don't know where to direct you, since there don't seem to be any help pages on gawiki. Maybe ga:Plé úsáideora:Guliolopez, the talk page of the editor who made most of the edits to that template?
However, in general, I'm not entirely surprised that you have this problem, because I have seen other problems where special characters used in templates get treated as the first characater on a line when they shouldn't, or vice versa (which is what has happened here). Do you have a reason to expect that the 'réimsí' argument of that template will accept a bulleted list? Have you seen it used elsewhere? Sorry I can't help more. --ColinFine (talk) 16:06, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello PrimeHunter and ColinFine. Thank you both for your very helpful responses.
ColinFine - I would expect that réimsí could accept a bulleted list or at least multiple answers as it means 'Fields' as in fields of research etc. I do appreciate that asking on the English help desk was a long shot, I just thought it would be worth a stry. The Irish version of wikipedia needs a lot more work but I want to make my contributions of a high quality and to be consistent in formatting. Great suggestion to ask ga:Plé úsáideora:Guliolopez, thank you. I'll head over to their talk page.
PrimeHunter I've had a play with {{{réimsí}}} and I don't think I'm using it correctly but the workaround using the line breaks is really helpful (see https://ga.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosalind_Franklin for example).
So the following works:
|réimsí=
But variations on
|{{{réimsí}}}
don't work? I'm sure I'm missing something obvious!
Thanks so much again both.Eolaíocht (talk) 17:24, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Eolaíocht: I mean you should change the code in the template itself so callers don't have to worry about what to do. Change the exact code I posted: {{{réimsí}}}. It occurs once in the template. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:40, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I can't get {{unreferenced}} to go away from Alas Islands!

[edit]

Alas Islands seems to have a {{unreferenced}} box on it that says “This article does not cite any sources.” But looking at the article source, I don't see where this box comes from. I want to remove it. I have checked the other templates it uses to see if one of them was including it, but if they were, I couldn't see how. Similarly, the article is in Category:Articles needing sources, which I suppose comes from the same place. Can someone please explain what is going on here? —Mark Dominus (talk) 14:50, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It was using template:unreferenced instead of template:reflist. Fixed.MB 14:57, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
At the time the question was asked it was using {{references}}, which in turn redirects to {{unreferenced}}. --David Biddulph (talk) 01:36, 27 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I see, thanks! —Mark Dominus (talk) 17:40, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Biased Article

[edit]

Hello

How we can report a change on an article form a non-logged in user?

They keep adding inacurate information on a Bio.

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eliasjansen (talkcontribs) 14:59, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Note This appears to relate to Mihalis Safras. Eagleash (talk) 15:21, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Eliasjansen: This appears to be mainly a content dispute, although that added by the other editor is markedly POV and not reliably sourced. Please do not continue to edit war over it as this could well land you in difficulty irrespective of the merits of the edits. You should attempt to engage the other editor at the article talk page or his own talk page. He has not been sufficiently warned as to his behaviour as yet, but the situation has gone past the point where warnings are likely to deter him. Your comment as to non-logged-in user seems a little odd, most of the changes seem to have been made by a registered account. For future reference you can report ongoing vandalism at WP:AIV or serious issues which require admin attention at WP:ANI. Please sign your posts at talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~). Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 15:21, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Eagleash Thanks a lot for the reply. BUt I see only an IP 62.74.9.43 that reverts the edits on teh article. The sources providedPOV are poor and not every single poorly proven article can be credited on Wikipedia. SO how can an unregistered user be warned? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eliasjansen (talkcontribs) 16:08, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I've warned the user about this. Normally you would probably be warned as well, Eliasjansen, since we find edit-warring very problematic. Discussion is always the preferred means of dispute resolution. However, per WP:3RRNO, I (as an administrator) would be inclined to avoid sanctioning you, as the content is 1) potentially libellous, and 2) poorly sourced. This edit, for instance, where the subject includes a quote that the subject "is considered to be one of the most high-profiled rip-off artists and the most productive techno plagerism producer on the planet" I find very problematic. Not only do I not see that quote in the reference listed, I would question the validity of residentadvisor.net as a source. Is it reputable? Mainstream? Is it just a blog? The other user has also used this as a reference, which I think is problematic as well, because interviews are considered primary sources, and we typically don't rely on primary sources for contentious content. If a mainstream publication were analyzing the claims on their own, that might be a different story, and then editors might be able to incorporate some of of the interview into the article, but right now this looks like a "one guy is accusing the subject of plagiarism" situation, and Wikipedia doesn't need to get involved in that. I've asked PeterSorin to open a discussion on the article's talk page. Please participate in the discussion if he does open one. Thanks, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 16:25, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Eliasjansen: As noted by Cyphoid, the majority of edits have been made by PeterSorin... several of which have been reverted by you. You can check who has edited the page and when, by clicking on the 'view history' tab at the top of the page. An anonymous (IP) editor can be warned in the same way as any other contributor, by leaving messages or templated warnings at their talk page. See WP:WARN for more information in respect of the latter. It is not good practice to leave templated warnings at the page of a regular editor (or one with an account). Pull quotes

[edit]

Hello you helpful bunch, I was under the impression that if we were to use pull quotes (See Vijay (actor)#Filmography), the quote has to already appear in some intuitive spot elsewhere in the article. Is there a guideline on this? I can't for the life of me find it. Thanks for your sleuthing, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 15:41, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I think you mean Vijay (actor)#Philanthropy, Cyphoidbomb. I can't find any guideline at all about the use of pull quotes (which I had to look up to find out what you were talking about). My first thought was that they have no place in Wikipedia at all; but then I realised that the example you point to is very much like including a photo. --ColinFine (talk) 16:21, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops, yes, wrong link on my part. Thanks. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 16:27, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
MOS:BLOCKQUOTE and {{cquote}}.
Trappist the monk (talk) 16:44, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Neither of those says anything about pull quotes, Trappist the monk: they are about formatting, and some do's and don'ts. --ColinFine (talk) 19:15, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Was mentioned at MOS:BLOCKQUOTE until this edit. The RFC redlink in the edit summary should have linked here.
I think by definition, a pull quote 'pulls' from the main text. The quotes in Vijay don't appear to meet that definition – they are simply block quotes of stuff someone said or wrote and so their use is governed by MOS:BLOCKQUOTE.

Search highlighting colour

[edit]

Not a major malfuntion or anything, but is it possible to change the colour of the highight for text found with ctrl+F? Atm it's a slightly dull light green; something brighter would be cool. Happy Sunday all! — fortunavelut lunaRarely receiving (many) pings. Bizarre. 17:29, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

ctrl+F search is a browser function and not a Wikipedia function, unless you mean in some editing tool which hijacks ctrl+F. Try asking at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Computing and remember to say which browser you use. A browser solution would change it all websites. If you for some reason only want to change it at Wikipedia then I don't know whether it's possible. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:51, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks PrimeHunter; just to clarify, I don't want to change ctrl+F, just the colour the results are shown in. I thought maybe a script if not in preferences. Much the same as administrators can be shown in blue and wikimarkup in mauve, as I currently see in my open edit screen; it's rather colourful actually  :) Thanks for the help though, — fortunavelut lunaRarely receiving (many) pings. Bizarre. 18:05, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia does not see your CTRL-F, does not know that you are searching, and doesn't highlight anything. It's entirely the browser, Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi. --ColinFine (talk) 19:21, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ah! Ok then. So it's my browser that allocates a colour to highlight with? Thanks both, as I said not that important, but would help my failing sight :) — fortunavelut lunaRarely receiving (many) pings. Bizarre. 19:32, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what browser you use, Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi, but here is a discussion about changing this on Firefox. It's not something that is readily made available to users to change, but you can do so if you wish. --ColinFine (talk) 00:25, 27 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

JAT COMMUNITY

[edit]

Jat is a warrior race of central asia. Jat is a dominating farmer community of Indian sub continental and found in mainly three regions such as Hindhu, Sikh, and Muslim. Jats are blessed with good height and physics and they are considered first grade armyman, sports man and agricultural community of india. Jat is offspring of great ancient warrior race the massagetae which was ruler of scythia ( modren day russia). Jat is known by many names_ jats, jatt, jutt, getae. Jat is ethnic community not caste of hindhu religion like barhamins, Rajputs and some lowest castes of india. According to some Historians and genetic experts, jat is a 3000 years old mixed race of massagetae, medes, white huns and Turks. DNA of Jat community had been originated in central asia and jats were first rulers of united punjab as they had conquered big lands from scythia to mathura of Uattar pradesh 2500 years ago. Jats produced some world famous emperors such as chandergupt, Great ashoka, shailaindra Harshvardhan from bains clan of jats. Emperors monga was first ruler of Indo/scythian empire of jats. There is no mention of the verna of jats in hindhu manuscript in which castes had been registered as barhamin, kshatriya, vaisha, shudra and dalits as jat was not product of hindhu society. There is a mention of jats in the Hindhu holy book Dev Samhita written by great barhamin scholar Pundit gourkh kumar in which jats had been regarded as devta, kshatriya, savior and prime rulers of the central asia. Jats never accepted verna and remained outside the orbit of verna system as a pure warrior race. Two great jat emperors_Maharaja Surajmal singh and Maharaja Ranjit singh of united punjab decimated the military influence of mugals and british kingdom in united Great INDIA. Great Bhagat singh and King Mahinder partap singh, World's two greatest revolutionaries, were the proud member of jat community. Jat big land lords( zamindar / Jagirdar) waged wars against Invaders, mugals and British and lost lives of 50000 brave jats. Some anti jats and biased writers tried to distort great jat history but failed to achieve the desired results. No other community above the jats in terms of bravery and martial skills. Jats have earned goodwill in politics, sports, science, social reforms, military and agriculture. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Veer of ranthambore (talkcontribs) 20:18, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Use of Photo

[edit]

If a photographer gives permission to use his photo with no limitations as to its use on the internet, what category should be used when uploading? Creative Commons? Thank you, Barry Raphael — Preceding unsigned comment added by Barryraphael (talkcontribs) 20:49, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Barryraphael: Hello, you will find information on licensing here (assuming that is what you are asking about). If it is still not clear, then you could go to the link to 'Village Pump' at the left of that page where regular Commons editors should be able to help you. There is also a link at the left to upload the file and the upload wizard should help you through the licensing procedure. It is preferable, but not essential, that files are uploaded to Commons.
