[edit]Trying to understand NGEO
[edit]What counts as being legally recognized? Census records? PARAKANYAA (talk) 00:09, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @PARAKANYAA, your question may be misunderstanding, so I would like you to clarify your question above in order to help our volunteers easily understand and answer your query. 2001:EE0:4BC7:72C0:21CD:A8F5:EB1C:410F (talk) 04:42, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- @PARAKANYAA, in the United States census records may be enough to establish notability, but there isn't really a standard of "legal recognition" that works all around the world. A discussion about this came up a few months ago on Wikipedia talk:Notability (geographic features). At least in the US, a good point of legal recognition is to find the location in Geographic Names Information System, and most geography articles that get put up for deletion are not listed in the census for the respective country they exist in.
- Overall, if there is proof that a place was populated at one point and that was recorded by a government, that is a good start for legal recognition. Reconrabbit 05:22, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
R Kelly image
[edit]I am really having quite a difficult time believing that an image is impossible to upload at WP other than the public domain mugshot of rapper R Kelly. The BLP article has been tennis-matched with reverted edits due to the fact that WP continually speedy deletes any and all images of the BLP. I have attempted on several occasions to request an image (Talk Page request template) and uploaded 2.5 WikiCommons category Free Share files that were immediately templated for speedy deletion without discussion. Would someone please just upload an image that passes the WP allowance for this BLP that can be used here? Enough is enough already. Thanks Maineartists (talk) 00:38, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Maineartists: Sorry, but we do not make copyright law. Congress makes the law. The Wikimedia foundation's lawyers have determined that the "fair use" doctrine does not apply to pictures of any person who is alive, because it is theoretically possible for a photographer to take another picture of the subject and release it uncer a compatible licnese. SO If you personally can take a picture of this artist, then you can upload it. If you can find a picture that has been released under a compatible license, we can help you. -Arch dude (talk) 02:17, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- Blah. Blah. Blah. Try spelling correctly before you post here. I've seen image after image get "squeaked" past WP policy because editors know the ins-and-outs of uploading by-pass get-arounds. Stop saying "we" as if you are the WP supreme court with a gavel. Either upload an image yourself, or just point me in the direction of how to upload an image of the BLP in question. If not, then just step aside, Betty. I'm through with all this help desk mumbo-jumbo. There are certainly WP reasons as to how and why an image can be uploaded when all other images are not accessible. Maineartists (talk) 02:43, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- That's a bold strategy. Let's see if it pays off for you... --Onorem (talk) 02:51, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- Maineartists, your mocking and contemptuous attitude toward copyright law and Wikipedia's image use policy will lead to a block if you do not drop the subject and move on. If you have actual evidence that other editors are evading and deliberately violating policy, then present that specific evidence or forget about it. Cullen328 (talk) 03:08, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- And the next time you call any editor "Betty" whose name is not Betty, I will block you myself. Cullen328 (talk) 03:10, 3 March 2024 (UTC)

Talk page
[edit]Can a user remove some conversation from its talk page which may be negative against that user? Like a user removed some topics instead of archiving [1][2][3][4] which were of course not ideal or positive for him. Jonharojjashi (talk) 02:50, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Jonharojjashi: Users may remove anything from their talk page except for a few specific things, such as an active block notice. See WP:REMOVED RudolfRed (talk) 02:55, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- Has it changed? I was under the impression that block notices could be removed, just not declined unblock requests. --Onorem (talk) 02:59, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- You are correct. I did not state it correctly. The rule is:
Declined unblock requests regarding a currently active sitewide block.

Changing a Redirect to Disambiguation Page?
[edit]I've recently created an article for foam depopulation, who's other common name is foaming. Initially I wanted to just add a redirect for foaming -> foam depopulation. However, Foaming currently redirects to foam. Should I try changing foaming to a disambiguation page or do something else here? If changing it to a disambiguation page, how best to go about that?
Thanks! TB5ivVaO1y55FkAogw1X (talk) 03:05, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- TB5ivVaO1y55FkAogw1X If "foam" is the primary topic, and "foaming" is ambiguous between two articles, you could use Template:Redirect. If "foam" is the primary topic, and "foaming" is ambiguous between three or more articles the disambiguation page would be Foaming (disambiguation). There is some guidance on formatting a disambiguation page at WP:DABSTYLE, but I usually start with a copy of an existing disambiguation page. TSventon (talk) 03:36, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- As far as I'm aware it's just two articles here, so add something like
- to the foam article instead of changing the redirect? TB5ivVaO1y55FkAogw1X (talk) 04:22, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- Ok reading through Wikipedia:Redirect#What_needs_to_be_done_on_pages_that_are_targets_of_redirects seems to suggest that makes sense to do it like that, so going to go edit that page to add that. Probably with the {{redirect2}} template since its got some already existing redirects mentioned there TB5ivVaO1y55FkAogw1X (talk) 05:06, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
World cup football
[edit]When and where the next world cup football will be held 113.199.226.106 (talk) 03:28, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- The Help Desk is for questions about using Wikipedia. If the article at FIFA World Cup doesn't have the info you're seeking, ask at the reference desk WP:RDE RudolfRed (talk) 03:37, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- The upcoming FIFA World Cup will be taken place over three countries, including the USA, Canada and Mexico. It will be held around June 11 to July 19, 2026. Hope this answered your question. Best, 2001:EE0:4BC7:72C0:21CD:A8F5:EB1C:410F (talk) 04:23, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- Extra note: There will be 48 teams participating in the next World Cup instead of 32 as before. 2001:EE0:4BC7:72C0:21CD:A8F5:EB1C:410F (talk) 04:47, 3 March 2024 (UTC)

Infobox
[edit]Is there any infobox for capital punishment/execution type of articles? Imperial[AFCND] 06:38, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- You could look around at Category:Infobox templates, but otherwise it might be helpful if you gave us the names of one or more articles to which you'd like to add such an infobox. Based on your question I'm not even sure whether you're asking with regard to articles that discuss means of execution, or articles that discuss famous executions. DonIago (talk) 06:51, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- I was about to create an article for the execution of Sambhaji (Passes WP:GNG). I will give a short note on that. Sambhaji was the second King of the Maratha empire in India. During the Deccan Wars, he was captured and executed. There are many records with many different or similar accounts about his execution detailing the event. So , is it appropriate to use Template:infobox death? Imperial[AFCND] 08:01, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- For additional information, the article would be similar to that of Execution of Charles I. Imperial[AFCND] 08:06, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- Considering that that article seems to be in pretty good shape and has no infobox, it may indicate that there isn't an infobox of the kind you're looking for. DonIago (talk) 04:40, 4 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks Imperial[AFCND] 09:12, 4 March 2024 (UTC)
- Oops but I left one to say that in the article of Execution of Louis XVI, Template: historical event is used. Can I use that? Imperial[AFCND] 09:16, 4 March 2024 (UTC)

Image of an warship that I took
[edit]When I took a picture of the ex-USS Maricopa County laid up at the south of Vietnam, I considered posting it here yet my doubts got the better of me as it's technically a military ship still in service and would constitute a copyright violation.
Six months onward, I am now considering posting said image again, yet I would have to confer to someone experienced on here... So should I post it here? e (talk) 09:44, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- I suggest you ask at WP:MCQ, where the copyright experts hang out. ColinFine (talk) 11:57, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the directions! e (talk) 12:46, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- Browhatwhyamihere, when you ask at WP:MCQ, you might add some explanation. If it was you that took the picture, then what exactly would "constitute a copyright violation", and whose copyright would be violated, and how? -- Hoary (talk) 12:34, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- I'll be sure to note these down once I get there. e (talk) 12:47, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
The Al-Rashid humanitarian aid incident

How do I create a page describeing myself as editor?
[edit]how do I create a page describeing myself as editor Gamountainhiker (talk) 14:57, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- You can create your own user page at User:Gamountainhiker. Note that your user page should only contain information about you as a Wikipedia user, it is not supposed to be any kind of social media profile, a professional resume or an advertising page. JIP | Talk 15:07, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Gamountainhiker You have a small amount on your userpage at present. You might like to add a bit more, in line with the guidance at WP:UPYES. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:06, 4 March 2024 (UTC)
How to download the 2012 Wikipedia?
[edit]here can I down load the 2012 wikipedia? 73.49.116.55 (talk) 17:51, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- WP:DUMP has the info you need on how to download it, but doing it for a specific date is beyond me. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 18:42, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- Well you would... you would... you would not want to do that. Why would you want to do that. Herostratus (talk) 21:11, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- I don't think this kind of reply is very helpful, this individual probably wants to do that for a research, or just to see (and archive) what wikipedia was like 10 years ago (probably comparing it to the current one). Hym3242 (talk) 20:43, 7 March 2024 (UTC)
What do the citoid/auto citation tools get the ISBN data from?
[edit]I know when it's a website or something like that it gets it from the website provided it's machine readable, but what are they grabbing the book data from the associated ISBNs from? I feel like that would have to be gotten from somewhere. PARAKANYAA (talk) 23:35, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
