City name in the local language[edit]

I've observed that the lead-in of a city article contains the name in one or more Indian languages. I have also observed a battle that keeps coming up time and again in the case of Bangalore where Tamil and/or Telugu scripts are added along with Kannada, which doesn't make sense to me (I just removed the Telugu scripted name from the article today). I agree that due to economic reasons a lot of people move between cities of different states and the original demarcation of Indian states based on language may not be completely relevant now. Bangalore is particularly prominent (after Bombay) because of the thriving IT industry inviting people from all over the country. But just because of that, it doesn't mean your language should be added to the list of vernacularly scripted names. To maintain complete political neutrality, all fifteen official languages ought to be used, which ofcourse, is extremely cumbersome! So IMO, I'd suggest that the official language of the state alone be used while scripting the city's name in a local language. Any thoughts? dp 20:38, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I think what should be used, is what people use it in the city. :) e.g. In Hyderabad, name Hyderabad is written on shops in one of the following: English, Hindi, Telugu, Urdu. In Mumbai, name Mumbai/Bombay is written on shops in English, Hindi, Marathi (Both are written in Devnagari, but they differ sometimes), and Occasionally Gujarati. (Once upon a time all train stations had name in Gujarati, probably due to the fact that Mumbai State had both languages, and Mumbai city especially has had large Gujarati population historically). Having Gujarati on Mumbai page may be politically incorrect in today's terms, but it may make historically.

Cities and districts[edit]

A number of Indian cities and towns of moderate size also has a district of the same name, for example, Ranchi is a district as well as the name of a town which is the district headquarters. In such cases, a stand should be decided about placing Wikiproject Indian cities. For the time being, I am placing this with all such cities and towns, which have an identical district name. I'm aware of the problem. For such cases, the district is named Ranchi district, and Ranchi is the town. What I have to still figure out is the status of Delhi, Chandigarh and Daman, three eccentricities. =Nichalp «Talk»= July 4, 2005 15:41 (UTC)

Neighborhoods[edit]

Many american cities have a list of neighborhoods e.g. nyc section and atlanta list towards the end, and a few sentences about the most interesting neighborhoods. I guess people would like to write about interesting neighborhoods in their own city - eg. mumbaikars about kabutar khana and colaba and hundreds of others. punekars have already added the peths in central pune, but can add more about these..

so maybe we can add the list of neighborhoods to the template? tejas81 12:52PM, may 24 2006

Agra[edit]

Can someone have a look at the Agra page? I am an american, and I am having a hard time finding source material for the suggested topic headings. Sports? Name of Mayor? Should Origin of Name be part of History?[edit]

Should Origin of Name be part of History? e.g. Hyderabad was originally Bhagyanagar, and later changed to Hyderabad. If it should be seperated, what type of writing style should be used? Should the history just say, City of xyz was founded by abc in ####? And avoid all references to name changes? Or Skip the Origin of Name from the main page, and provide all that information in History of the city, a seperate page? Chirags 17:39, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Spellings, transliterations, et al[edit]

Can the name be given in a consistent standard Latinised transliteration from the original language, after the version in the original language? It should probably be in National Library at Calcutta romanization. This should apply to districts as well. Imc 17:54, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Gujarat Riots[edit]

I recently came across this page - Gandhinagar. It has a section called terrorist attacks, which begins with the gujarat riots of 2002. everyone knows that those riots spread all over gujarat. so does it need to be mentioned on the pages of all the cities/towns/villages related to gujarat? there is a lot of discussion going on about the same issue in the talk page of the article Gujarat also. should all such events be part of their respective city's/state's article? - Aksi great 14:55, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Naming convention for districts[edit]

Are there any naming conventions for districts and towns with the same name. Most districts in India has a town with the same name in it. For example there are two articles in wikipedia called Kottayam and Kottayam District. There is a lot of redundant information in these two pages. Is it necessary? I believe we should discuss and implement wikipedia guidelines for indian town and district articles. Referencing and citations[edit]

Many articles on Indian cities are bereft of a proper or at least uniform referencing format. To improve the quality of articles on Indian cities and to promote uniformity in citing sources, there needs to be some discussion on referencing the work of others. Typically, in the United States, most sources either use the APA style or the MLA style. The APA has a more complicated format and is used more often in academia for scholarly research papers. The MLA tends to be an easier format to follow and is probably used more extensively. What are your thoughts on selecting a specific format for citations? AreJay 19:50, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bhopal[edit]

Symbol for kilometers[edit]

The symbol for kilometers is not "Kms" and not "KMs" and not "kms" and not "km." and not "Kms.", etc.

It is km, lowercase, no full stop, no s.

Hindi Names of Cities[edit]

To whom it may concern: I feel it is important (although not completely necessary but a good idea) that we also include (or be allowed to include) Hindi names for the city of India. Hindi is our country's national and official language. The Hindi name (along with the name(s) if local languages) will be a uniting factor among the cities of India. Hindi is also now compulsory in most parts of India as well. The Government of India sedulously works to promote the spread and usage of the language. As Indians, I feel we should support this stance by our government.Hindi is even said to be the language that unites India. I feel that in the cities of India, we should also be allowed to put the Hindi name next to the local name and should not be reprimanded for doing so. I would greatly appreciate for the leaders of this project to consider my idea.

I too disagree. Names of some cities are not meant to be written in the devnagri script. From my limited knowledge of south indian languages, I think there are some letter which do not have any equivalent in Hindi. None of the above responses have provided a solid reason why the Hindi name should not be included, whereas the original proposal did provide quite a sound reason. I'm just curious what your reasons might be. If they are really valid, I can accept not including the Hindi name. Do you think it will clutter the introductory sentence too much? hydkat, what 'historic' reasons do you have against the inclusion of the Hindi name? Could you be more clear? Aksi_great, 'Kozhikkode' cannot be written correctly in English either - I think the railways use something like 'कोषिक्कोड' to transliterate the letter 'zh'. I don't think that 'phoneticity' of the Devanagari script is the reason for including Hindi. In a recent (rather extreme) example of the application of this rule, non-English spellings for Mumbai were shown as Marathi/Hindi: मुंबई (since they are identical), and a user deleted the word 'Hindi' there. I agree with the original proposal that the Hindi name should be included along with English and the official language of the state. Yes. Kozhikode may not be written correctly in English either. But we have to do with that as this is the English wikipedia. The Hindi names would not clutter the opening sentence too much - but there is no need for them. We are not here to promote the stances of the Indian government with regards to Hindi. Hindi is not a traditional language of some Indian cities not part of the Hindi belt and hence should not be used. For using the autolocator map, on the infobox, do the following,

Remove the image_map tag. Do not include a existing picture.
Check if latd and longd coordinates exist, for latitude and logitude.
Add locator_position tag to indicate whether the "city name" label should show on the left or the right of the dot. Example: See Nagpur

Duplicate places[edit]

Hello Indian city editors! Scanning through Category:Maharashtra geography stubs I found several articles which seem to be duplicates:

If they are the same places they could do with being merged but I apologise if I have tagged them when they are not duplicates. They should not be too difficult to merge as many are bot created articles and contain very different information from the hand created version. WikiProject India[edit]

The following discussion is copied from WT:INB. Please respond there to keep the discussion centralised.

I think we should retire templates for the various Indian wikiprojects such as {{Wikiproject Indian districts}}, {{Wikiproject Indian cinema}}, {{Wikiproject History of India}} etc. and replace them all with {{WP India}}. It has various advantages over the others.

We can rate the articles - the rating counts appear on the WP:IND page as we do so.
Each of the above child projects can get exposure as the template can incorporate their names as well.
This will guide new people and other interested readers to a centralised project page and help us recruit better for the projects.
It will help rejuvenate the WP:IND. It has the lowest no. of members of all these projects.

These are just some thoughts. If there is agreement on this, we can start by replacing the templates on the project pages with the {{WP India}} template. -- Lost^(talk) 18:25, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
